Brant’s life is planned for him. He will attend the best academic school in England, run his father’s estate, and marry well. But, with the sea calling to him, and a father that treats him more like a soldier to be commanded than a son, he takes off to find his own destiny.

What Brant doesn’t know, is that the sea is a cruel mistress, and once she owns you she won’t let you

Interesting new author, to me. I enjoyed the book, but les swashbuckling and less romance than I imagined. Brant was an interesting character, and I will read the next book to see if he gives up the sea. I was somewhere between a 3 and 4 star.

Riveting story with vivid characters, adventure and romance. Wonderfully rich descriptions of the lives of British privateers in the 1600s.

Hired as a cabin boy, Brant was hardworking and a quick learner. Under the wing of a trusted sailor to guide him, he thrived with new skills and responsibilities. Adjusting to the risk-taking lifestyle on the seas, Brant experienced many wild adventures and hardships as he grew from boyhood to manhood. All his teachings had not prepared ...more

This was a fun beginning to what I hope to be a fantastic series.

Brant's life is all planned out for him, or so his father thinks. Brant on the other hand has a dream of being on the sea.

When Brant decides to go to see, he heads out to the docks to see if anyone is willing to take him on and teach him the ropes. He gets on a pirate ship and learns everything there is to know about sailing, and piracy.

When the opportunity comes for him to have his own ship, things at home start going in a diff

I do enjoy a good pirate tale, so I dug into this book, ready to leave the prairies behind. Steendam took the reader on a great adventure as the protagonist, Brant, risked everything by leaving a comfortable lifestyle with his family and joining a privateering crew. Brant, was a likeable, sympathetic character who grew as the story progressed. I would have liked to have seen certain scenes delved into a little deeper, but all in all, this was a short, easy and enjoyable read that would be ...more
