J. Grisham fans
There are 104 pages of review on this book, and I read two pages worth and agreed with a dozen or so. I always wondered why cheap thrillers like this book never get discussed in great literature classes and I think I can answer that question. 1. Because there is no interpretation. Books like this are no brainers. Little thinking is required.
That's really it.
Now for the book review. First of all, Grisham needed like 1 or 2 more pages to close out. He rushed the ending.

Grisham has a way of writing a real page-turner. This was one of those books that I just couldn't put down. The suspense was intense, and the story was good.
This particular story deals with some very graphic racism violence and abuse. The story then centers around the trial of the black man who killed those who abused, demeaned, and murdered his precious and innocent little daughter.
It leaves you with the question, "Is there a time to kill?"
When I finished the last page,...more

I read this before John Grisham became JOHN GRISHAM. I was reminded of To Kill a Mockingbird. I started school in 1953--we didn't have separate but equal--there were 3 black children in my class from 1st to sixth grade-then middle a few more and then high school the mostly black section of town went to my school--it seemed normal to me--I has no idea except from TV news what was going on. A man from Mississippi came to dinner at our house (in New Mexico) saw a picture of me with 1 of my black...more

In a small local neighborhood in Mississippi brings a very strong racism issue to the table. In Clanton Mississippi Carl Lee and his five kids live, one day his youngest daughter goes to the market to buy groceries and comes home beaten raped and badly injured.

My absolute favorite John Grisham novel.
A black girl is raped by white men in the deep south, and it looks like they're not going to be punished for the crime. The girls father, Carl Lee, takes the law into his own hands and guns them down in the courtroom. Jake Brigance is tasked with representing Carl Lee, who refuses to plead guilty, despite the mountain of evidence and witnesses. Jake has to get a southern jury to acquit a black man of murder by asking them to disregard the law and ma...more

Anyone who likes a good story with MANY twists
This was the first John Grisham book I ever read. It is also my most favorite of his. I read it along with "The Firm" (which I BLEW through). Because of how fast I read "The Firm", I decided to read this ONLY at the pool that summer. Took me all summer to read it and by the end I was dying to know what was going to happen, but it was the longest its ever taken me to finish a book and it made it so much better. I was so HUNGRY to know what was going to happen to these characte...more

This is Grisham's first novel, and is as thrilling and addictive as his other books that I've read. As a page turner that does not require too much concentration, it was the perfect choice for my plane trip. As expected from Grisham, the story is a legal mystery, and the plot is set in rural Mississippi where a 10 year old black girl is brutally beaten and raped by two racist white men. She survives the horrific event, but understandably, her father shoots and kills the men in an act of revenge....more

Continuing with my reading of all Grisham titles. This is the first I've read of the southern trial novels. Extensive use of the N word was disturbing but it's used for an accurate portrayal of the voice of white southerners of the period, not gratuitously. Much more disturbing was the scene of the violent attack on a little girl that's the basis of the story. Again, not gratuitous. This novel was based on a true story. A thoughtful and thought provoking reminder of the cruelty and racial ...more

orang-orang dengan pikiran dangkal
sebelum baca buku ini, i know nothing about racism.
dan gue berfikir kalau amerika itu negara yang fair dan udah bebas sama isu-isu macam itu.apalagi waktu itu gue masih SMA, so belum tau banyak tentang isu multikulturalisme and stuff.
but then, setelah baca novel yang juga udah difilmin, mata gue terbuka *ciyeh, dramatis dikit* dan gue jadi sadar kalau didunia itu masih ada perbedaan cuma gara-gara warna kulit lo beda, dangkal banget, ya?!
pada intinya, buku inilah yang bikin gue jadi a...more

thrilling court dramas, legal justice, race issues
This is Grisham's first and one of his best novels. The beginning of this book was the hardest part for me to get through. It is very graphic and the images stayed with me for a long time. The book begins with the brutal rape of a ten-year-old black girl by two drunken white men in a fictional town in the south. When the two men go to trial, the girl's enraged father shoots and kills the two men because he believes that his daughter will not find justice in a white court. The rest of the story c...more

I love the backdrop of this book. Grisham takes you down to southern United States and weaves a nicely put story of a poor little black girl who is kidnapped, raped and beaten by a tough-guy rebel and his accomplice. After the father of the girl gets revenge, he is put on trial. From this point, with a white up-and-coming lawyer serving as the defense for a black man in what becomes an ultra-racist town, the plot thickens.
I don't know much about law, the judicial system, but when you read a Gr...more

I loved this book. I saw the movie, but the book is so much better. I am not good at putting in words why I like a book so much, but this book had me hooked. I really enjoyed reading about what they were going to do to keep this man alive and not put him to death. It was strange because on one hand, he killed a couple of people so he should be sent to death, but on the other hand, what they did to his little girl was unforgivable. Being a mom now, I don't know what I would do if something like t...more

Grisham deals with the horrific face of racism and it's consequences on everyone it touches. The book begins with the brutal rape of a very young black girl by two drunken white men in the south during the battle for civil rights. When the two men go to trial, the father of the girl, enraged and believing that his daughter will not find justice in a white court in the south, shoots and kills the two men. The ensuing court battle for the black father's freedom is taken up by a youg white lawyer. ...more

I read this book back in High School, which was a LONG time ago, and I couldn't put it down. I remember I was in the library and the first chapter with Tonya getting raped brought me to tears. I know the people in there probably thought I was crazy, but it was just so real and heart wrenching. I was born and bred in the south, so I enjoy reading southern based books. I loved the final summation speeches, and one again was moved to tears. Themovie is also one of my favorite movies of all tim...more

Yes! At last! A time to Kill! This book is very valuable to me since this is the first novel that I read way back when I was in my freshmen years in high school. I loved the story and I just love how John Grisham twist the unpredictable plot in this book. He never tries too much yet he's book are definite page turner. Yet.. I hope he talks less about the legal stuff.. Well.. He's a lawyer.. So.. that's that.. Anywayz, this book simply drove me to become hooked with the John Grisham series and o...more

This book is one of the only examples I can think of when I liked the movie better then the book. I found this one a year after The Firm had come out and really enjoyed the story. I did like how the movie made Lester smarter and more in control. I was highly pleased to see an interview with Mr Grisham where he said something similar. That the movie allowed him to fix a few things with the character that as it was his first book he hadn't thought to fix. Still a great read and well worth checking...more

This is a great story about justice and race. This was Grisham's first and best book, although as an environmentalist who studied law in New Orleans, I have to also love The Pelican Brief. Although The Firm was a fun read, none of Grisham's other books made me love them, although I was impressed with his non-fiction foray, Innocent Man and was extremely impressed with his address to the Texas Bar and his involvement with the innocence project. As an aside, the movie A Time to Kill, was well d...more
