I really love this cozy mystery series. One of the reasons it is a standout for me amongst all the cozies I have read is that the protagonist, China Bayles, is described as "short and stocky, with a preference for jeans, tees and anything wash-and-wear." How refreshing! I get a little tired of the tall, willowy heroines who never gain weight and are beautiful even without makeup! Additionally, Susan Albert is a skilled author who really knows how to hold the reader's interest right ...more

I am a huge fan of the China Bayles mysteries, but this one just didn't do it for me. While still worth a read, there were too many chapters ending on foreshadowing, and too much of China telling the police their business. And too many loose ends at the end! In a mystery, I feel that most everything should be nicely wrapped up at the end. We keep reading because we love the characters, not because some cheap plot trick is drawing us back for more.

Becoming very fond of China Bayles and her attempts to balance, home, work and time for a mystery and always some good things to eat. Whatever faults anyone finds in any of the plots in the series, there is no fault in the descriptive writing style of the author. She has a gift of make a scene appear in your mind's eye as clearly as though you were seeing it in front of you. Wish the series would never end.

I thoroughly enjoy the China Bayles mystery series. Its exactly what I like- memorable characters, a setting that seems like someplace I'd like to live, an amateur detective, and no gore! To me these are, along with the Sue Grafton & Janet Evanovich series, the modern version of Agatha Christie books and the best mysteries around!! I've read many of Susan Wittig Albert's books and will read many more!

This is one of Susan Wittig Albert's newest herbal mysteries featuring China Bayles in Texas. This plant I never heard of-Dead Man's Bones-but has great tidbits on it for any gardener. Good read.
