When you’re having a baby, almost everyone whose had one has some advice for you, whether you want it or not. Unfortunately, it’s still considered rude in our society to tell those people to shut up.
This book is kind of like that. It’s more or less one person’s opinions and experience with a few studies thrown in. The difference between this and some lady you see at a restaurant is that you can tell the book to shut up.

This is an excellent book with a lot of factual information for impending fathers. It's not goofy or aimed at blockheads who are wondering why their wives eat pickles and ice cream. I found the explanations of what your partner is feeling from month to month to be spot on. It was almost uncanny and has helped me to appreciate the struggles and joys she experiences with each passing month.

Any expectant dads
This book is fantastic. The first time you and your wife become pregnant, books will start appearing out of thin air telling her every minute detail of what is happening each day of the pregnancy, what the baby is doing now, how big it is, what might go wrong now, and how to deal with it. If you are like is, you'll end up with 2.3 copies of each book on the subject.

New Fathers who are incredibly stupid and/or bored
Kind of a lot of extraneous information gets in the way of what should be a much shorter book. This book insulted my intelligence. I guess this wasn't really what I was looking for. It's too broad to be of any real use to me. I much prefer brief, no-bullshit specific advice on things that are not subjective. This just came across as a really well-meaning collection of good things which don't really match up with each other. Who wants to sift through that? Especially new fathers or fathers to be....more

This one was a good, fast read that was filled with valuable information for the novice father. It focused on issues relevant to the man who wants to be involved with his children, starting at pregnancy. It gave basic developmental information for each month of the unborn baby's life, as well as some of what the pregnant mother is going through. While there was some information missing (the author remarked twice on leaving the umbilical cord uncut until it stopped pulsing, but never mentioned wh...more

Well, who knew, I knew so little (actually, I knew!). I had been reading along as Nico grows inside Jessica's belly, but I just had to finish the 9th month and subsequent chapters the past week. Impending Joy/Fear tells me I need to start reading about infant and toddler care.
Thankfully, Jessica has had a fairly normal pregnancy, and little morning sickness, so the loads of advice in the early months really didn't come into play. Of course, we are 8 weeks out from our due date, bu...more

My wiferecommends it for: Expectant fathers :-)
I really wish goodreads would let you give half stars, because I liked this more than 3, but not sure I can give it 4 stars. Anyhow, this isn't the kind of book you read from start to finish. Each chapter basically details what's going on physically, psychologically, developmentally with your partner, the baby, and you (the expectant father) during each month of the pregnancy. It's pretty informative, but also has a lot of humor thrown in. I started reading it about a month and a half into K...more

dads to be
It feels like an eternity since I read this book in preparation of my first child's birth (who's only 10 weeks old). That being said, it served as a concise, and positive, guide to the months leading to a child's birth.
I found it to have a good, practical perspective that often seemed at odds to the books targeted to expectant moms that are much more detailed and much more prone to eliciting paranoia.

It's pretty decent I guess. I'll see how well prepared I was after the baby arrives. Most of the advice is fine, and there's a lot of personal experiences thrown in by the author. It's near condescending attitude toward the reader is a little annoying, making the average man out to be some ham fisted hulking brute that is coming into this experience with no paternal instinct whatsoever.

Yes, I am a lady, who is expecting in about 3 1/2 weeks now but this is still an interesting read. As it's American there is a bunch of wacky stuff which doesn't apply to me here in Aus, but for the most part it dishes out intelligent, sound advice. It's handy to know what my husband may be going through so that I can be supportive of him and also to know what he should be doing for me - where are my foot massages?

Okay, it's been about 3 years since I read this, but I recall it being a great book for me when Anita was pregnant with Robbie. Perhaps if we add a second kid to the Glocal Family mix I'll give it a bonus read.

Lots of information. Probably the most formal of the "expectant dad" books that I've read. Did a much better job than any of the other books of describing what is going on with the mother and the baby.

Expectant fathers, just like the title says
The best book for Dads-to-be that I've read (there aren't many available). Each of the initial chapters correspond to a month of pregnancy and begin with 3 lists: what your spouse is going through, what the baby is going through, and what you are going through. The parts about what the father is going through are spot-on! I couldn't believe that I was being that predictable. Nonetheless, it is very straightforward and helpful. There are regular notes to remind you to do things like rub her feet ...more

I found this book very helpful... it was nice to read something about parenting where being a dad was dealt with in more than a sentence!

Decent read, but I should have just gone to the library. This kind of book is far from timeless, and so disposable. I would rate it "one star" because of this, but given that most books are in the disposable category these days (such as some of the sci-fi that I have rate relatively highly) - I look for other criteria.
This book is enjoyable to read. Covers the bases of what you need to know. And is well organized. It does serve as a passable reference. I might give it a fou...more

Not only is this the best book I've seen for expectant fathers, but it might be the best book I've seen for expectant parents. Sure, the focus is on the father's relationship to the pregnancy and his partner, but this book does an excellent job of addressing the issues in an even-handed and calm manner. The author, though rather manly (an ex-marine), isn't trying to pigeon-hole fathers-to-be into some hyper-manly role... instead he takes a very modern and sensitive approach to what it means to...more
