A funny book. Too bad I'm already starting to get frustrated at some of the narrator's antics and poor decision-making skills. I can understand *some* of her choices, but really wish she were less slow-witted and quick to judge a situation when she has so little information.

Also, there was a scene where she told her friends to exit the nightclub while she went back inside and retrieve something. She ended up being "delayed" for a long while enduring a mini-adventure. The next time she saw her fr...more

The second in Gemma Halliday's High Heels mystery series, Killer in High Heels was just as entertaining as the first. It was definitely a light read, but an enjoyable one. The cast of characters was the same as in the first book of the series, and just as likable. From the indefatigable Mrs. Rosenblatt to flamboyant Marco, the secondary characters were as hilarious and fun as the main two characters, Maddie and Detective Ramirez.

I'd rate this book a 3.5 or so. There were only two reasons it didn...more

Ditto what I said about the first one in this boxset I bought.

I bought a box set of three of these (3 novels plus a short story) real cheap on Amazon. What can you expect for $.99? I'm glad I didn't spend much money. The writing style was nerve-wracking. I know the character is supposed to be shallow and spacey, but the constant avoidance of verbs with the Junie B. Jones-esque "I did a little eye blink" or "he did a low whistle" or "I did a noncommital shrug" or "I did a sigh" or "she did a litt...more

Once again another murder mystery with Maddie. I really liked the first book in this series, as I said in my earlier review of Spying in High Heels. I was super excited about this book, mainly because I had such a fun ride with the first book, and the authors tone is just so enjoyable to read. I have to say that I am glad to see that the authors tone has remained completely consistent, I love the humor infused through ev...more

H/h Ramirez and Maddie

This is the 2nd book in the series and I enjoyed it more than the first. The story takes place in Las Vegas but this time Maddie has her possie with her posse with her. Maddie and her crew are trying to help her long lost dad who calls when he needs her help after seeing an article about her in a tabloid. Things move from "are you kidding me" to "off the charts funny" in a matter of pages.

If you are looking for a book that is light, fun, but with some intrigue this maybe t...more

Okay first off this is a second book in a series so if you kind of need to read the first one Spying in High Heels. Alright that said, if you choose to read farther down before you read the first book, I will not be held responsible.

Halliday comes back with another fun, funny and fashionable murder mystery romance with her second book in her High Heels series Killer in High Heels.

LA Shoe Designer Maddie Springer has not seen her father since she was young and he reportedly ran off with a Las Veg...more

Maddie is back. This time in Vegas with family and friends. Her absentee father finally decides to surface in her life and needs her help to get him out of a jam. And that's not the only surprise he has for her. I don't know what happened to the series. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. This one, not so much. In fact, if I didn't already order the rest of the books, or had read this one first, I would not be reading the others. There was zero growth from the first book. The characters actuall...more

The HIGH HEELS MYSTERY series is one I stumbled upon in my effort to read more free and cheap e-books on Amazon. Now, the first one was a bit goofy and silly, but cute enough -- so I gave #2 a shot. I think the whole airhead shoe-obsessed detective who miraculously gets herself out of every possible dangerous situation in life is probably a bit too out there for me in this novel.

The story starts with Maddie receiving a message on her answering machine from her father, who abandoned the family ye...more

Like the first book, it's an entertaining, fast read. Like other readers, I'm finding it harder to like the main character, Maddie. She's whiny, stubborn, lies all the time and I'm seriously starting to wonder if she has a tapeworm with the way she eats and doesn't seem to gain anything. The author reminds the reader a few times that Maddie only makes enough at her job to pay her rent and keep herself in ramen noodles and high heels. Then WHY does she go out for expensive coffee shop coffee drin...more

This is the second book in the High Heels series starring Maddie Springer. The first book was very interesting and held my attention, and the second book was even better. I was laughing out loud through the whole book, and literally couldn't put it down. It was a page turner, and I'd recommend it to any person who wants to read a chick-lit, romantic, cozy mystery.

I was rooting for Maddie and Ramirez the whole way through. I can't wait to start the 3rd one. It's a fast, fun read for a rainy day,...more

I liked the first book in this series better than this book. I'm not really sure what it was about this book, but almost everyone in it got on my nerves at one point or another. Maddie should have just hung up on her mom instead of listening to her whine about "where she went wrong". Hated that. Ramirez doesn't call Maddie for weeks and then, after she calls him, he calls back and then gets mad that she hasn't called him back after less than a day. I know why he hadn't called in so long, but it...more

So I like this book and I don't like it at the same time. Mostly I will continue reading this series because I like the other characters and the story is pretty good. I just don't like the main character, Maddie. She is way too obsessed with her looks. For example, she doesn't end up having sex with her almost boyfriend (even though they were rounding 3rd base) because she couldn't remember if she shaved her legs or what underwear she was wearing. It wasn't going to be "special" enough for her f...more

Maddie Springer is your everyday children shoe designer scrounging together a living in Los Angeles. Somehow she keeps stumbling into Officer Jack Ramirez's way. First it was a murder involving her ex boyfriend and now its her estranged father. Larry ran off to Vegas with a showgirl when Maddie was a kid. She hasn't seen him since. That is until he saw her picture on the cover the LA Informer and called. But all Maddie gets is a phone call ending with a gunshot that sends her to Las Vegas. With...more

Shoe-a-holic Maddie Springer is back and things are apparently not going as well as the ending to the last book would lead you to believe... She's doing her best to get over it when she gets a frantic message from her dad- not Faux Dad but Real Dad. Seeing how she hasn't spoken to him in twenty something years, it comes as a bit of a surprise.

Despite having said she wouldn't call Bad Cop, Jack Ramirez, the sound of a gunshot on the message sends her into a bit of a panic. Since she has no idea...more

This second installment was a true wild ride on through the streets of LasVegas. Maddie is constantly having run-ins with the police, her boyfriend goes undercover in a drag club, Lots of guns pointed in her face, Maddie herself goes undercover in drag, a little puppy gets stunned with a stun-gun, her best friend turns into a gambling addict, all while trying to undercover her dad's conncetion to the shoe mob, and solving the death of a naked suicidal drag queen jumper!

Maddie is completely in o...more

Killer in High Heels” is number two in the series with Maddie Springer and as in the first book, this one doesn’t disappoint with clichés and annoying repetitions.

The book starts with the big bang within the first pages as Maddie talks to her “real” dad on the phone when she hears a gun shots (or so we're to believe) in the background before he hangs up .... but then nothing really happens until about hundred pages into the book. It was a drag!

There were a couple of things already in the first...more

just as good as the first... it's about 6 weeks after the first book and Ramirez isn't answering her phone calls... Dana is trying to make her work off her missing Ramirez binge she'd been on... and then she gets a phone call from her long gone dad saying he needed her help... to make matters worse she might just have a stalker that followed her from LA to Las Vegas where she plans to hunt down the dad she hasn't seen since she was 3 and of course disobey every request Ramirez makes of her... li...more

I'm with a lot of the other reviewers here; what was kind of funny and cute in the first book somehow gets incredibly annoying in this second in the "In Heels" series. While the mystery isn't too bad, the protagonist repeatedly gets into dangerous and stupid scrapes, none of which are cute and all of which are totally of her own doing. Her cop boyfriend repeatedly admonishes her, and then basically "teaches her her lesson" by alternately saving her and and making out with her. This pretty much c...more

This is one of those slapstick sort of mysteries where the heroine, Maddie, has no intention of solving mysteries but becomes a mystery magnet. This is a book that I really wanted to like, but couldn't quite suspend belief long enough to just enjoy the laughs. It's all too much. Too much stupidity. Too many "dates" by the best friend. Too many stun gun mishaps. Too many broken promises. Too many characters that you don't even like or care about.

There is great sexual tension between Maddie and Ra...more

Same story, different setting. Although I enjoyed catching up with Maddie Springer, I have to admit that after a while the "dumb blonde" antics start getting old. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that if it involves guns, and you're not a police officer, you probably should not get involved. If your homicide detective boyfriend tells you a situation is dangerous to let him handle it, gee... if a homicide detective says it's dangerous, maybe you should stay out of it and let him handle...more

I have the first five books in the series because B&N.com sells the box set for Nook for $2.99. I enjoy the stories. They're fun and a bit silly, but I did find some niggles with this one.

Some of Maddie's thoughts/comments makes me wish she were a bit less focused on appearances and a little bit more compassionate at times. She isn't a bad person. I really do like her, but a few of the things going on in her head hit a few sore points for me. Of course, that's the danger of being able to se...more

Even funnier than the first one! Lots of wacky hijinks, some things that I wasn't expecting and some things I had figured out, but altogether entertaining. I remember looking at this series when browsing for Kindle books and passing on it. You just never know from the small blurbs if they are going to be good or not, but this series is more than worth the reasonable prices on Amazon.

I'm not a big fan of love triangles, but I rather liked Felix the reporter, probably because he was British and ca...more

While I really enjoyed the first in the "High Heels" mysteries, I think this will be my last one. This book just did not have the excitement that the first one did, and really, I am just tired of the main character, Maddie. As much as all the cliches were funny in the first book, it's the same old thing in this one. There were a few twists and turns at the end that gave it some excitement, but it clearly hovered in 2 star range for me for most of the book. Just the same thing all over - Dana fla...more

I loved Spying in High Heels and Gemma Halliday's style (which is actually a lot like mine so what's not to love, right?) so I was really looking forward to reading the second one in the series.

Maddie is an absolute scream. She finds herself in crazy situations but still manages to come out on top. Sexy cop Ramirez will make all red-blooded females hot under the collar, I can tell you! Coupled with a trip to Vegas, an OTT gay friend called Marco, and a gun-toting personal trainer called Dana......more

Eh, well. I thought Maddie was a little dim in the first one, but I put it down to her thinking she was pregnant. But in this one? God, she's an idiot. In many ways, but specifically her scheme near the end? How in the HELL did she not see that coming? And why does she keep showing up in places where club owner guy will see her and connect the dots? And why doesn't he? In addition to that, notes for the author: it's "minutes" and not "minuets," "uzi" and not "oozi," and "Dentyne" and not "Denten...more

Another chick-lit character, a la Shopaholic, that I love to hate. She's blonde, cute, eats a ton of junk but still looks good, survives off designing shoes, has a bundle of caricatures around her, is rash and impulsive, gets Into ridiculous situations, and of course has an on/off relationship with the hottest Hispanic cop in the LAPD (hot sex included, but not indulged). So of course I get sucked into the story and use my commute and lunch time to finish it in a couple of days! Intriguing myste...more

Enjoying this series very much. This one set in Las Vegas -- so many twists and turns your head would spin (and that's a good thing in a mystery). Series definitely reminds me of the Stephanie Plum mysteries --- somewhat ditzy main character who can't seem to avoid life-threatening situations or stumbling (literally in this one) over dead bodies. Similar collection of odd friends and relatives and confused love life. Fun and laugh out loud dialogue.

So, if you love Stephanie Plum, you'll probabl...more

Another guilty pleasure series! Campy, irreverent and fun! There is the usual "wee" bit of steaminess, however, it's given with rather hilarious effect. Maddie is blundering through Vegas trying to help her "flamboyant" father. I laughed so often, I am glad I was home alone while reading this! This is no Sherlock Holmes, but it's full of adventure, mishaps, one ticked off - hot in pursuit mama, shoes - shoes and more shoes, mob, mafia family, one bad-ass friend with a stun gun and weepy blubberi...more

Gemma had a hard time figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up. She worked as a film and television actress, a teddy bear importer, a department store administrator, a preschool teacher, a temporary tattoo artist, and a 900 number psychic, before finally selling her first book, Spying in High Heels, in 2005 and deciding to be a writer.

Since then, Gemma has written several mystery novels...more
