Nicholas Whyte[return][return]A fairly standard Dicks treatment of a competent Brian Hayles script. Perhaps because this is one of the stories whose visuals are completely lost, there is much less than usual of the feeling that the author is just writing down what he is watching on the screen. The best bits all survive recognisably - Ben's disbelief that they have travelled in time, Polly's gender confusion, Polly and the Doctor appealing to magical forces, the Do ...more

The Doctor Who historical stories are usually fun.
This one is a suspenseful tale involving pirates, buried treasure and secret passages.
It features the first Doctor, Ben and Polly, which was a combo I always liked, but only got to experience in the books. Ben and Polly were a good couple, but never get the good PR of other companions.
This is one of Ben and Polly's first trips with the Doctor so their reaction to being the past adds a nice touch of confusion to the story.

This is an improvement on the previous stories. The Smugglers is the first story of season 4 of Doctor Who and it finally has the Doctor was a protagonist rather than a plot device. He is joined by new companions (first introduced in The War Machines); Ben and Polly. The plot is simply enough with smugglers and pirates vying for lost treasure and The Doctor being the only one who can locate it.

A fun, easy, read.

This is a rollicking good time of a Doctor Who adventure, complete with pirates, and you can't go wrong with pirates!

The Doctor and his new companions, Polly and Ben, arrive in 17th Century Cornwall and get caught up in plans, intrigues, pirates, riddles, and hidden treasure, with plenty of action.

Really enjoyed this. It's a good introduction to the Ben/Polly dynamic and gives a reasonable sense of expectation for the forthcoming Tenth Planet. (Also reads interestingly for anyone who has recently watched the 6th Season episode of the Who reboot (with Matt Smith's Doctor) - The Curse of the Black Spot
