Barbara Gordon
I wanted to like this one because I always look for fantasy settings that aren't bog-standard pseudo-medieval Europe. The cover suggests that the setting is Japan (which has also gotten overdone) but it's more a mash-up of Asian countries with a very non-Asian language.
So I was willing to forgive the somewhat unoriginal premise of a young woman establishing herself in a misogynistic society, and the annoying prophecy that forces her to remain a virgin, for the sake of what the setting and secon
This was an ok book. I thought it started off too slow, but it did keep my interest enough to finish it, though I took some time off. The end picked up and was rather good. Lot's of inferred sex in the book which was equated with the bad guys. Thank goodness no lurid details or this never would have been finished. Still, it was interesting to read a fantasy that had Asian background not the usual European/British lore.

Couldn't finish this - in fact I didn't even get halfway through before I decided to drop it.

The weird use of thou, thee, dost, etc really threw me off as it didn't fit the rest of the language at all and seemed more pretentious than anything else. This along with the fact that I didn't connect at all with the character(s) after several chapters made me feel like there probably are better books on my to read list.

Perhaps I'll give it another try in the future; plot seems good enough.
Basically? Porn, of the lovingly-detailed variety. I wish it had warned of that in some way. Any way. Not that I don't life porn, but I'd rather know what I'm getting. I went into this book expecting a story of a strong young woman rising to meet the challenges put before her.

Well, there was some rising involved, I'll say that much.

In theory, this book was perfect for me; in practice, not so much. See my entire review here:
Well-structured plot and characters. Vorsa was probably my favorite--he was so funny! I loved the cultural nods to feudal Japan, but it was still unique. Great story.
I like the premise of the book a lot but I think it could have been executed better.
