Mathias Svalina's dynamite little chapbook won a prize from New Michigan Press last year, and deservedly so. (I never would have found out about it if I hadn't tried for the same prize and lost.) It's a perfect combination of tight conceptualization and completely unfettered imagination. Each of the poems--some line, mostly prose--details an oddball story of the creation of the world.

Great cover photo, first of all. I love the worried look and the drool on the baby's face, and the woman laughing in the background.

My favorite line:

A void is a void, nothing to get all maudlin about.

My favorite passage:

God created the world over the span of four years.
He would get all excited about it & work really hard for a few days
& then he would watch some movies & get out of the mood
of staying up late crafting mountains & deciding where to put all the
Shell stations.

I've read a lot of work by this guy in journals that I like, but I found this particular chapbook a bit formulaic at times.

Super plus plus. The edition I read could be better designed, but the poems were some of the better contemporary ones I've read.
With each creation myth you read, a new microcosm develops in your understanding of the world.
