3 1/2 stars. I found the second volume in the series difficult to focus on. There are two storylines here. The first follows Amelia in her new role as the Protector, as she grows ever more sure that the Magistrate is up to no good. The second follows Hector who is now a soldier fighting terrible monsters outside the city. The two stories alternated, and though I liked them both, there just never seemed to be enough time with either story. Lightning fast switches in tone, character and location ...more

Even more fun than the first volume. For instance: Puppyzilla. But don't worry, Amelia would never let anything seriously bad happen to a puppy, even a monstrous one that was trying to squash her. Kudos should go to artist Nick Brokenshire for making a puppy look cute and scary at the same time.

Also, if you are overworked, over-scheduled, and overtired, read this book. It will make you feel like continuing the good fight, and it will provide you with a nice bit of relaxation as you sympathize wi

This volume didn't quite grab me as strongly as the first, but it's still a very good story. It fleshes out the world that Amelia is in a lot more, expands upon the mystery of the Magistrate and the (seemingly) demonic forces he serves. We also get introduced to Omega Company and see the further story of the previous Protector, who serves there now.

Interesting things are afoot.

Amelia is adjusting to life in the third world where science and magic coexist, and to her new role as the Protector. Meanwhile, her arch nemesis, Hector the Former Protector (whose job Amelia took) fights magic-stealing demons with an army in the inaccurately-named Desert of Forgiveness.

As I suspected, much stronger in the second volume. Looking forward to seeing where Amelia goes next!

I loved the first one so much and this one was excellent! There is a lot more going on and I need to read the next one NOW. Also just want to say that Nick Brokenshire's work is awesome.
