This book has to be the all time best travel book for Maui!!! Not only did we find all the best snorkel spots and places to eat, but the book was so entertaining that even the kids were reading it. Great investment. (I've heard that the older versions include some places to go not in the newer versions. The authors were pretty generous about devulging secret places to go that were on private property or were environmentally sensitive to more folks exploring. These places were removed from later...more

We just returned from Maui today, April 4, 2008, so things are fresh in my mind. Don't get me wrong - this book is good, but there were a few things I disagreed with.

First, we took the Quicksilver snorkeling tour to the Molokini crater, and it was wonderful!! Would recommend that to anyone.

Second, I disagreed with a few of the Road to Hana stops that they suggest. Things may have changed since the book was published, but some of the places we could not see and we fol...more

If you are going to Maui, you need this book! The author writes with such entertaining and informative style, that it is truly fun to read. As a guidebook, it is invaluable! Because of this book, we were able to enjoy nearly empty beaches unknown to the average tourist and see sights that most visitors miss because they have no idea they exist. Avoid the tour buses and explore Maui on your own with the help of this excellent book.

An excellent guidebook if you want to do lots of exploring while visiting Maui. The directions are very accurate, and the book is arranged logically so that the traveler does not have to do a lot of work organizing an itinerary. Also has lots of detail about specific beaches if you are interested in that. Not much on lodging, and not the best restaurant reviews, but otherwise a very useful guide.

Painful information organization! So bad!

But still, a fun book to both flip through and to read. Lots of helpful knowledge embedded in a populist outlook. It's not like Maui can suck; but this book gives some tips on how to make it more fun.

I found this author's writing incredibly irritating... it reads like an old white guy who moved to Maui in his old age and now considers himself and born-and-bred Hawaiian - and, so course, very 'hip and cool' ... whatever the reality, however, his tips are amazingly detailed eg 'between the 5 and 6 markers on this highway stop off and go 30 feet into the trees on the north and you'll come to a beautiful, hidden waterfall' or some such thing. So, we'll see if it all pans out in a couple months ...more

These travel writers are the best I've read. If you are going anywhere look for these 'Revealed' travel books. They actually live where they are writing about so they give you the real low down.

A useful, practical, easy to use travel guide. If you plan to go to Maui, you'll want this one. Definatley recommended.

Probably one of the best guidebooks I've ever used. It's chock full of information and it isn't a dry read. I always recommend it to people going to Maui.

This is the best guidebook on Maui that I could find. It has it's faults. For one, the narrative style makes finding specific information difficult, especially in the car on trips like the Road to Hana. On the other hand, that style is what makes the book a lot of fun to read before your trip.

My take on Maui is that the beach and ocean are the best parts. The volcano is cool too - especially if you don't have mountains where you're from. Everything else is just gravy, and, honestly,...more

Extremely straightforward and clear about the author's opinions, though his writing style occasionally grates. I won't be able to guage its helpfulness until after the trip...

Finally, a down-to-earth, practical guide book. A co-worker lent this to me and I will definitely buy one for our upcoming trip to Maui.

This is hands down the best guide book to Maui ever. The author, a native to Hawaii, wrote books for the other islands too, and claims that the natives are mad at him for giving away the scoop on the hidden gems of the islands. In fact, I shouldn't even be promoting this book in fear that these secret treasures will become crowded. If you like to camp, hike, explore and travel off the beaten tourist track I highly recommend taking this book with you.

Rachel and I took this with us to Maui when we had our commitment ceremony done in 2004 & it is THE best guidebook I have ever seen! It's full of wonderful color pictures & I saw a TON of people on the plane with the same book. The same two authors have a couple of other guidebooks for the Hawaian islands. I have the Oahu one also, but haven't had a chance to use it just yet. Great guide!

This is THE best guidebook on Maui in print today. We go to Maui for 3 weeks every year, and thought we knew it like the back of our hands.....until we got this book. Soooo many hidden places to discover. Last year we actually went back to Maui and explored things we'd never done/seen before. And this year, we will do the same thing. If you are going to Maui.....GET THIS BOOK! :-)

Ok, this book rocks for the traveler. I will say that it gets only 4 stars because of the troubles that its publication has caused for land management people, for neighbors of many of the places listed, and for the residents of Maui who now have to deal with fanny-pack laden, sun-deprived tourists who leave their litter and act disrespectfully toward the island(s).

The best guide book ever; it's written by Hawaiian natives. It took us off the beaten path where we discovered really beauty waterfalls and hiking trails. There aren't many clear markers of where to stop on the road to hike, but this book pretty much points them all out.
