Annie O'Neill has it all - a cosy Manhattan apartment, a beautiful bookshop and a network of supportive friends. But at the heart of her life is a hol read full description

The Amazon description says lots of complimentary things, but I didn't find the denouement a shock at all. I found the true identities of the people in the manuscript fairly obvious from the start, although I confess to being fooled a little longer by the love interest. I was also annoyed by the author's habit of constantly referring to the heroine by her full name.

Nonetheless, it wasn't bad and the five/ten star rating means that if I came across a copy on a lazy day I would choose to re-read i More...

This is a really good read. I like Ellory's emotional intelligence, if that's the best way to put it. He writes strong characters in whom you can believe, and relate to at times.

The only weakness in this book and probably a significant one really, though I'm still giving this 4 stars, is the big reveal. You read with quite a clear picture of the outcome, but just know that it will all be turned around and not what you imagined at all. But, then it is all as you thought. This is rather disappoint More...

Mina was trying to unload/share books with us while we were in France, and she gave me this one that sat on my shelf for about a year before I got around to picking it up. It's a pretty quick and easy read, and it sucked me in pretty quickly, but it did drag at times. I spent much of the time while reading it trying to guess the plot twists, and it was pretty predictable pretty early on, but there were still some details that surprised me once the book was complete.

Not a bad read, and it was a More...

RJ Ellory is marketed as a crime writer, he describes himself as a crime writer but once again he has delivered a novel that is so much more than a crime story. Whilst there are crimes, and some pretty gruesome and violent ones at that, these crimes are not the heart of the story.
A real study of people, life, circumstances and destiny and not a police man or procedure in sight. Annie O Neill is thirty year old American book-shop owner – initially a pretty drab character with not much to look for More...

Could not really catergorise this books genre but just to say was an engaging and enjoyable read although like many others I too guessed the ending. I loved the relationship between the three characters and found the book to be a real page turner. i found the writers descriptions of new york and the characters utterly convincing that they story really drew you in. A great story to lose yourself in. I would heartily recommend it.

Ghostheart is an immensely readable novel . Roger J Ellory’s novels (at least the two I have read) seem to be more about people and how they react to crime and violence than they are about the crime and violence itself, although he does seem to have been labelled a crime writer. The writing is often quite lyrical, and the story itself is unputdownable, I just couldn’t wait to find out how things would work out – and how all the pieces would fit together. I suppose I did guess most of it – and it More...

this is te second of Ellory's books I have read (A Quiet Belief In Angels being the other) and I would certainly pick up others as I see them.

This story has a great plot that kept me guessing until close to the end. I thought I'd figured everything out halfway through, but I'd probably figured out no more than 30%.

I recommend this book to anyone who simple wants to get themselves lost in a good story

I preferred this to Quiet Belief as the "who dunnit" question is more like "who are they?". Also Annie is a developing character that even I, as a guy twice her age, can identify with. I loved some of the other characters like Jack Sullivan too. On the other hand, once more the ending is a little too contrived for me so no more marks, I'm afraid.

Great story within the main story and although most readers will work out most of the ending the final chapter was still excellent. The characterisation of even lesser characters is great and even the faux Chandlerisms bring a smile of recognition rather than being annoying as in some author's works.Overall an excellent, well thought out pageturner.

Quite enjoyed this one , I found it to be a bit of a chicks book , as always with Ellory the story takes a while to get going and we get the whole reveal at the end. I kind of figured out where the story was going more or less straight after the second part of the Harry Rose book but it didnt take anything away from it though ,I found the Harry Rose chapters better than the main story at first, I liked the little twist right at the end too .

I really loved this book! The only other Ellory I've read was Quiet Belief, which I liked well enough, but all the enthusiasm for his writing has rather passed me by until now. How is this man marketed as a crime writer? This is a beautiful book that engages every emotion going and the twists and turns in the modern day relationships are thoroughly absorbing punctuated by the chapters of "fiction" Forrester gives Annie to read. OK, so you can guess the end about 50 pages short, but that really i More...

I loved this book. RJ Ellory said that this was a challenge fr him to write - in female voice. But he did a splendid job. The ending has a wonderful twist and the characterisation is marvelous.

I couldn't put this book down. It's a bit different to what I normally read but the story just draws you in. I look forward to reading more of his books.

it is beautifully written and the layered narrative too is good, however the surprise element was not at all too surprising

READ IN DUTCH

This was the first book I read by RJ Ellory, quite some time ago. At the moment this book isn't for sale in the Netherlands, something I find really strange, for it was one of the best thrillers I've ever read.

It's not primarily about the story, that wasn't too special, but the writing style is just terrific. Sometimes is closer to a novel than a suspense novel, but it is enjoyable anyways. Here in the Netherlands publicers like to use the word Literature when describing a thriller More...

took a while to get into and the "shock" denouement was fairly obvious to me, even if the characters didn't figure it out, but I enjoyed the second half of the book more

Good read enjoyed the storyline and the character of Sullivan although thought Annie was a bit wet at times. Guessed the ending but still worth a look.

What an amazing read!
When I first started reading it, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, however I persevered and was so glad I did. I found myself completely absorbed in it. I loved the characters, especially Sullivan. I too guessed most of the ending from about two thirds of the way through, however it didn't spoil the book for me. There was one little surprise at the end that I hadn't guessed. I loved the writing too, and found myself welling up with tears towards the end! Excellent, d More...

This is an extremely well crafted novel. I wouldn't describe it as a crime story, more of a mystery... Roger Ellory has the gift of drawing you in to become part of the characters' lives and I ended up really caring about Annie O'Neill.
Although,a little slow to get started, once you are in, you are hooked, desperate to know the final outcome. Like all great novels, I was disappointed when I had finished.
I would probably rate this has his best I have read so far.

This was my third RJE book after reading a Quiet Belief in Angels and Candlemoth, both sublime. This was beautifully written too and as I write this review a few months after finishing and quite a few books on I can still remember the storyline well. There is a but, and that is that I was disappointed in this read, I just think the story wasn't so appealing to me as the others unfortunately, so perhaps my expectations were too high.

I really enjoyed it I thought the telling of the story through a story unique and captivating. She did cry rather a lot in heartbreak it did get a bit boring but at the same time it was genuine. Clever and interesting I thought over all not hard to see through but a good ending.
