Smoke is going after some guys thaatburned his house down. They shot 2 of his hands. And they took his wife Sally. pearlie and cal went with him to help and pearlie split up with smoke to get all the supplies they need. Smoke stayed on there trail to hopefully watch them.

A book I bought for almost nothing on the final day of the Borders 90% off sale that turned out to be #23 in a series. Not that it mattered as I think all the books are self contained.

This was a lot better than some western books I have read, but the basic plot could have been pulled from a 1980's Hong Kong kung fu movie.

Great "page turner." Smoke's wife is kidnapped and...
Typical Johnstone effort. Same formula. Same characters.Same gratuitous violence. He even cuts and pastes dialogue from previous novels re: certain characters.I can see how he managed to write over 200 books. Still, it is entertaining if you suspend belief in the true west for enjoyment purposes.
