A Samantha Mystery

Samantha is excited about her family's stay at a fancy new "apartment-hotel"- until she learns there's a terrible curse on the building's owner! As soon as Samantha arrives, one thing after another goes alarmingly wrong. Is it the curse - or is something else scaring the residents from Ravenscourt?

I read this book since I had recently read the complete Samantha series and short stories, but had not read any of the historical mysteries. I decided to give this one a try. Also, this author is going to be author of part of the upcoming new historical series, so I wanted to check out her style.

As a mystery for children, I think it will do well for the age 8-11 audience. The two overlapping mysteries are adventurous enough to keep the target audience hopping, and Samantha has a bit more persona...more

My book is about an eleven year old girl called Samantha who thinks she is going to stay at a luxurious hotel until she finds out that the hotel's owner is under curse. I really likes the character Samantha as she had all the good qualities a person should have. She is a really nice detective and she also has a lot of courage. I liked the because of the mystery mixed with horror. In the beginning it was a little boring. But, in the middle it got a l...more

I enjoyed it especially since there was surprises. It really took you back to that difference between the wealthier people and those poor people just like today. It also took you back to that 1900- 1906 feeling with all the dresses, horse drawn carriages, all the classy things for wealthy people. But I also like it when the author incorporated the feeling and view of a not so wealthy person from that time period. I especially like the mysteries. You thought it was one person but then suspected an...more

Meatier than most American Girl books, but still in the same comforting style with dependable, responsible characters. This book is a mystery. Samantha, now living with her aunt and uncle and three adopted sisters, is temporarily living in Ravenscourt, a new high-rise luxury apartment building in NYC. When strange things begin to happen in the apartment house and the girls hear that there is a curse on the owner, Samantha decides to look at the facts logically and discover what is going on.

It was amazing!! A book about Samantha and her three sisters. They had moved into a apartment/ hotel while their house was being fixed and Samantha and her sisters find out all kinds of things are going on at Ravenscourt. So they try to solve the mystery, but it just gets them in a lot of danger

3.5 Stars.

Not the best mystery - to me the solution felt so obvious all along, even for a kid's book. On the other hand, I do enjoy Samantha and Nellie and thought this a fascinating snapshot of life at this time with a good dose of adventure thrown in.

Review by Blake: A really good book. Mystery is magnificent because you could never tell who could be the culprit. Samantha does some detective work and finds out who the culprit is. I would recommend this to anybody.

A nice little mystery for Samantha. Sam's mysteries really unfold after Nellie's Promise, with all four girls living with Cornelia and Gard. This has a nice bit of suspense, much like an early Nancy Drew.
