About 3 or 4 of the books I read every year are actually unabridged audio books we listen to on road trips. The night before we left for North Carolina, I made a whirlwind trip to the library with the girls to grab a few possibilities Michael and I might enjoy. I remembered that Michael appreciated Allende's House of Spirits, so I grabbed this one. There was no time to even read the back that day, so as we started listening, I was really confused. After a while, I realized this was a Young Adult...more

i curse my compulsion to finish a book once i've started it. this was good for killing time when i couldn't sleep and didn't want to read anything of substance, but holy crap is it awful.
isabel, que paso?? i understand that this is young adult and 'magic realism' in the vein of her more famous works, but boy does this cross the line. basically, these adventuresome teenagers and a grandmother and some randoms use magic and their wits to defeat an african dictator and free some pygmy slaves. did...more

Wow, did Allende run out of steam or what? I LOVED the second title, Kingdom of the Golden Dragon, so much that I thought that the final book would be the best book ever! The first was good, second, like I just mentioned, was great, so I had incredibly high expectations for the final book in the trilogy. And maybe I was setting myself up for disappointment for doing that in the first place. Maybe it wasn't as bad as it seemed.

No lo recomen...more
Ademas d...more
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other two. It went a little too far, fighting that dictator and all. The first two books where about friendship and discovering mythical beings and learning something in the proccess, nothing more but two friends in a good adventure. Pretty good for a teenage book. But this one,it carried the whole "save the world" issue and it kind of bothered me,as did the love story at the end. Even the narration was half-hearted. It made feel that the author was bored of...more
I thought this was a beautifully written story. Everything was very picturesque and it was easy for me to imagine the setting. I found the story really basic and most of the time, although it held my interest , was just boring. This is the third book in a trilogy and although I did not read the first two books, I don't think that was a problem. In spite of the beautiful imagery, it was just rambled a bit too much for me. I have read many of her other books and really liked them so I was disappoi...more
There is no question that Isabel Allende can write good stories with good characters. Here she successfully brings to a conclusion her trilogy of stories for young readers based around the characters of Nadia and Alexander.
Forest of the Pygmies is well developed with colorful, but somehow realistic characters. The story is full of foreshadowing, something often missing from most children’s literature. There is magic, religious tolerance, and even philosophy. Read it at whatever level you choose....more

This is the third book with Alexander and Nadia, and Alexander's grandmother Kate (who is really very un-grandmotherly, and only peripherally involved in the story--she is really a vehicle to get Nadia and Alexander first together, and then to the place of the next adventure), and this was by far my least favorite of the three. The story takes place in Africa (the first was in South America and the second in Southeast Asia--so good rural continents), but the story line was just not as engaging a...more
I have a thing for magical realism stories. I've always loved the transitions between what's real and what's not, and the wondering whether something is even possible in the remoteness of the settings Allende uses. I'm sad to see that not everyone agrees with me (although I've never thought that would ever happen in my life). Maybe it's because this genre is not for many people, or maybe it's because all that feel is lost during the English translation process(I did notice how many were English-...more

To really enjoy it, one must read before the other books of the trilogy. It ends up a trip of brilliant and brief imagination where the reader can get back some childhood's feelings. It is clear however the story follows the same path as in the other two, but considering it is fiction targeted to young people, it should not disappoint anyone. Moreover, Allende tried to get rid of most of the common clichés found in adventure novels, succeeding most of the times.
I don't know whether it's just me, but I throughout this trilogy have been desperately wanting Alexander and Nadia to get together. (I can sense romance a mile away.) So when they finally did I couldn't help be a little bit disappointed about the way it happened. Also for the first half of the book Nadia was hardly mentioned???? Apart from that I have nothing but praise.

I've been wanting to read Isabel Allende's books for children for some time. I unknowingly picked up the third book in the series. The story stands alone well and without the last chapter I wouldn't have known what I was missing. I'll need to add the first two to my list to read.
I listened to this one on audiobook.

This is a really fun YA read from one of my favorite authors, and the third in the series. The story is very captivating, and is a YA version of Allende's usual magical realism style. The descriptions are so vivid you can almost smell the rainforest, and the characters are flawed and realistic, aside from their supernatural-ish powers.
What may not be believed does not mean that it does not exist. Nadia (Eagle) and Alexander (Jaquar) are on another adventure. This time they are in East Africa and are witnessing the corruption of the male rulers of a village. Pygmies, spirits and slavery are all part of this exciting last novel of a trilogy.
Wholeheartedly, the weakest entry in the series. Allende's standard magical realism comes into play once more, but with much more force and much less interestingly. The atmosphere that made the previous two installments successful is lacking here. Even if you liked this series, I'd pass this one over.
The last of a trilogy. This definitely wrapped up all three sagas with a sort of "greatest hits" of all of the souls from the first two books levitating in to pay their respects and support. Pygmies was the weakest of all three in my opinion. The suspense was there but the underdevelopment of an ancient queen and the civilization and mysticism surrounding her was minimal at best.
I.A. got me hooked on an adventure novel where animals - not my favourite - had a whole lot to do in the plot. Excellent for her!! Loveable characters; Jaguar and Águila, Angie Ninderera, Michael Mushaha and despicable, very real-like evil characters: all of the three heads were definitely fellas you have-to-hate. Really liked it. Four stars.

This is a nice fantasy series. Touches on some deep themes, both spiritual and environmental. Also gives a global perspective, and the writing is engaging. The third book in the series, but the only one I have read. It was fine as a stand-alone, but if you want to start at the beginning, try Kingdom of the Golden Dragon or City of the Beasts.

Isabel Allende Llona is a Chilean-American novelist. Allende, who writes in the "magic realism" tradition, is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin America. She has written novels based in part on her own experiences, often focusing on the experiences of women, weaving myth and realism together. She has lectured and done extensive book tours and has taught literature at s...more
