This would have earned four stars from me for being a clearly written, incendiary history of religious movements in America. I was very impressed by the conclusions he drew about the Constitution and the significant impact Mormonism has had on the state of all religion in America. I deduct a star, though, as Ruthven was often mean-spirited, and had many unkind things to say about obese people that had nothing to do with religion.

This is an entertaining book in which the author, a British man, uses a cross-country road trip as a way to look at how and why the United States has been such a hotbed of religious diversity and a breeding ground for new religious movements.

I was hoping to be more shocked and amused by this book - after all, the ultra-religious in America can be an odd lot - but it proved to be a bit too academic for my liking.

An enjoyably eloquent overview of the diversity of American religious bonkers-ness.
