The Campaign of the Marne by Sewell Tyng is a superb account of the opening campaign on the Western Front. This is not a book for those who prefer the soldier's view of war. It is military history pitched at the strategic and operational levels of war, with tactical actions interspersed that demonstrate the effects of the fog and friction of war. Tyng's style is concise and very readable. The chapters are short, from 4 to 12 pages, which makes it fast paced, enjoyable and easy to maintain a clea ...more

Sewell Tyng's The Campaign of the Marne is an excellent work on the opening battles of WWI on the Western Front. If you can only read one book on this subject, this would be the one to read.

Sewell's writing style is concise and clear. The chapters are short and well-focused. The sequence of the story paints a clear picture. The footnotes at the end of each chapter are extensive as are the appendices, which take up 25% of the Kindle Edition of the book.
