Sungguh.

Saya hidup kembali.

Botchan sebenarnya enggan jadi guru apa lagi ketika ia mengajar ia mendapatka More...

Very funny especially if you have ever been a teacher. It kind of reminds me of the trials and tribulations of Torgodevil in Korea (especially in the beginning). The novel details all the stupid politics and rivalries between teachers and the administration not to mention the students themselves, who are spoiled and unruly. The narrator is also interesting in that he is from Tokyo and looks down upon the small town as provincial and unsophisticated.
Though you can identify with him, the ma More...

This was fun, short, verging on sweet. Because I am not entirely sure what I took from it morally (unless I am to imagine it's a straight a,b,c growing up tale - I'm not sold that it is), I can't really say I found it completely sweet. I don't know what the word is because amoral, lacking morals, all have a bad sense about them. Maybe it had empty morals. Or maybe even morals that really weren't morals at all.

I'm totally enjoying this book. Also, I'm freaked ou More...

This translation has such an engaging voice - in-your-face, unapologetic, a little given to posturing but largely honest and down-to-earth. That sums up the narrator as well. He's a young man who is inclined to be tactless and rash. He has no especially strong ties except to a lady who works for his family as a servant and emerges as a kind of mother figure.

Botchan wanders into a career as a teacher in a provincial school and comes face to face with treachery, hypocrisy and the comp More...

Botchan was written by Soseki in 1905, and it is widely considered to be one of the most important works of Japanese literature, as it was one of the first modern works that touches on the conflict between traditional values and beliefs found in remote Japanese villages, and the influence of the West and a modern society in a major city such as Tokyo.

The narrator is a young man of slight build but feisty spirit who has recently graduated from university with a degree in physics, who More...

This novella was neither thought-provoking nor entertaining. A small part of my lack of enjoyment may have been due to the fact that it's a satire of a specific social order that I'm not familiar with -- but the bulk of the problem lay in the book's over-simplicity.

The intrigues between the 2-dimensional characters (that make up the bulk of the story) are trite, dramaless and inspire no emotional reaction from the reader. Each of the faculty members has either one or two personal q More...

Natsume Soseki was a famous Japanese literature author who passed away in 1916. His books are incredible.

In "Botchan", he is offered a teaching job after graduation and collects his belongings, hops the train and ends up some godforsaken place called "Shikoku" as a mathematics teacher in a middle school. What he discovers upon arrival is a very odd bunch of characters for colleagues.

Botchan decides to give them all nicknames like: Badger for the Princi More...

'Ever since I was a child, my inherent recklessness has brought me nothing but trouble …'

'Botchan' was written 106 years ago and is still one of most popular books in Japan.

'Botchan' is the story of Botchan, not his name, its a endearing or dismissive name for a young man of a respectable family, his real name is never revealed.

Botchan has always been a handful for his family and as he gets older, he still remains a handful. Following the death of his Father, More...

More...

Itulah si Botchan, dari kecil tumbu More...

Nah, minggu kemaren disempetin baca. Botchan is the nickname of the otherwise unnamed narrator, a young man who leaves Tokyo to teach math at a middle school in a country town in the south of Japan. He has no particular interest in teaching, but he has nothing better to do so he accepts the job when offered. Botchan the novel is considered the most widely-read of all Japan's modern novels and Botchan the character is often compared to Holden Caulfield, but I find the comparison inapt since Holden was an obnoxious creep who though More...

I definitely enjoyed this book a whole lot more the second time through, and it has a whole lot of charm and character to recommend it. It does require a little understanding of the background to Japan in the time of writing, but the introduction covers that pretty well. It is enough to give the reader what is needed to enjoy the story.

The characters are lively and interesting, as they are flawed, and their interactions with the main antagonist, Botchan, are entertaining. However, whe More...

“Since i was in the childhood, my indiscretion always gives me many problems.” That’s written in the first sentence in the first page in that book. He’s a young teacher whom located in a cloistered area in Shisoku. Because he’s very idealist, and a little bit naive, he will face many problems because the system in the new school has very different proper be More...

Tadinya mau kasih 3.8 bintang, tapi ternyata endingnya kurang memuaskan. Soalnya saya mengharapkan ending yang heroik bak pahlawan... ;D

Still engaging after all these years.

That's the years since I first read the thing (in college) and the years since it was written (at the turn of the 20th century in Japan). The main character, a new teacher from Tokyo at a boarding school out in the country, is angry, proud, stubborn and hot-tempered... and absolutely chucklesome. I suppose that's one thing that sets it apart from most boarding school fiction - the naif everything hangs on is a teacher, not a student. To a certain More...

Cohn's translation makes this 100-year-old book sound modern, which means it can easily be read by Americans. And it's funny - as in both odd and comical. Here is this short, mouthy, impulsive Japanese man (what?) from big-city Tokyo stuck in some god-forsaken hick town, enduring annoying ignorance from students and townfolk plus the two-facedness of the school faculty for which he has made up nicknames. Botchan is self-righteousness and thinks himself a tough guy. Readers have got to love gems More...

I enjoyed Soseki's Light and Darkness and Ten Nights' Dreams very much, so I was glad to see that Botchan is available as a free ebook.

The novel's protagonist, 'Master Darling', is quite a likeable young man. He's ill-tempered and 'simple-minded', sure, but any personal failures he might have are balanced by his strong sense of justice. When he realises he's made an error in judgment, he doesn't hesitate to apologise and rectify the mistake.

The only emotional attachment he has and loves is that with his childhood maid Kiyo, who never stops from showering motherly love and praises on him.

I don't know about any of you who have also finished reading this, but somehow Botchan reminds me of J.D. Salinger's lead character in "The Catcher in The Rye", Holden Caulfield. I can't help myself from drawing comparisons between the two, even though it's like comparing Lady Gaga with Celine Dion. They're simply un-comparable, if you get what I mean.

Anyway, I like this classic tale of a young teacher from Tokyo who got an offer to teach a middle school in rural Japan, whi More...

I incline towards claiming that a) I either don’t understand Japanese books or b) there is absolutely nothing special in Japanese literature in the first place. I am always enthusiastic when reading literature from remote parts of the world (not that I read it so often). Instead of relying entirely on European or American books it is a great pleasure to try out something new. As I unconditionally love most kinds of literary genres (maybe except sci-fi) I was rather disappointed with the prose s More...
