Ancient Greek literature comes to us in a fragmentary state, and that's doubly true for anything that isn't history or philosophy. For a poet of her renown, both anciently and today, it's saddening to realize that what actually remains of Sappho's works, which were collected in antiquity in nine volumes, is two more or less complete poems (#1 and #31), a handful of less-complete, but still largely preserved ones (#2, #16, #44, #94, #96, maybe #55 and #98), and a scattering of fragments, which ra ...more

This was a pretty good collection, with a few different poems to the ones I've read. A few others I had read in another translation. It was still pretty awesome to see how different people have done those same poems. :)
Beautiful fragments about her love feelings. Sappho's birth was sometime between 630 and 612 BC and it's a good reminder that gay people have existed throughout history.

Sappho (Ψάπφω) was an Ancient Greek lyric poet, born on the island of Lesbos. In history and poetry texts, she is sometimes associated with the city of Mytilene on Lesbos; she was also said to have been born in Eresos, another city on Lesbos.
