Keller, Laurie. (1998)The Scrambled States of America. New York: Henry Holt.

Category: picture book

Kansas is unhappy that he never gets to go anywhere, so he and his friend, Nebraska, throw a party for the rest of the states. They have a great time (I love that they're all wearing name tags)and make friends with each other. Idaho and Virginia come up with the idea of having everyone switching places so they can see a different part of the country. After the initial novelty wears off, they realize...more

Bored one night, the states decide to have a talent show. The states take on different tasks to prepare for the show. Through the preparations, the structure of a state's counties and cities are shown (with emphasis on Georgia), as well as the macro geography of the globe. Once the talent show begins, the states perform acts (that have very little to do with the actual states themselves).

With a lot of...more

We found a video treat at our library: we just watched Scholastic Video Collection: The Scrambled States of America and More Stories to Celebrate Our Country DVD, which features animated adaptations of children's storybooks. This story was narrated by Jon Carroll with music by Jerry Dale McFadden and we just loved the format. It reminded us of the Tumblebooks animations that we occasionally watch online. As the book is narrated, we followed along with a slightly animated version of the illustrat...more

This shouldn't technically be classified as non-fiction as the states do decide to pick up and move (with hysterical results) but the facts are that this is a fantastic way to introduce and reinforce American geography with children. I've been looking and looking for a way to do just this, but everything I've found is either dry and unappealing or cutesy and ineffective. This is the first thing I've come across that incorporates all the elements I was looking for - funny engaging storyline and i...more

This book can serve as various tools for the classroom, with the greatest use being for geography. The book focuses on the physical shape of each state and helps recall where they are in relation to each other, since they get all mixed up. You will find yourself trying to remember which state goes next to each another. It would be great for a class to make their own version of the scrambled states but larger and put them together in a large open space, which will teach students the geographic lo...more

As we're studying US History I thought we should also learn the states, as in where they are located. I bought this as one of the tools by which to learn them. Little did I know we'd read it 5 times in 2 days and laugh our heads off the whole time.

My boys loved the humor. They loved the silly pictures. They loved the little 'asides' the various states made. All four of them, from the 9-yr-old to the 3 yr-old sit through the entire book. As soon as I finish they ask for it again.

Now, is it workin...more

I want to give so much positive credits to the author of this book! I was presented this book in class and I laughed so much of the genius cartoons, drawings and their quotes. This book is perfect to use when you want to see and learn a little bit about the states of America in an easy way. I did not have so much knowledge about the states of America and where they were located, but after reading this book and studying the pictures I can recognize a few more states now. Actually, I would love to...more

This is a great book that makes learning fun! When the states decide to change spots, hilarity ensues.

This book is a little difficult to read aloud, because of all of the asides and details, but it really adds to the enjoyment and the re-readability factor- always important in a children's book. I pick up on some new detail every time I read this.

Which state gets a sunburn? Gets their hair ruined by a passing ocean wave? Dodges sharks? Which pair of states fall in love? If the states came to a...more

I absolutely adore this book! This is such a fun and engaging way to help kids remember the states of America! What would happen if states switched spots with each other? It brings life to the states and gives them each a personality that would really help students and myself for that matter all of the states and where they are on the map... and some reasoning behind that! :)
There is so many activities kids can do along with this book- could have cut outs of the states and have them manipulate...more

In this book, the fifty states of the United States of America get tired of being in the same place that they are always in on the map. So, they decide to switch around and move wherever they like. At first, they are excited about this, but after staying in another state's place for a while, they are dissatisfied. They finally decide to move back where they were originally and to be happy where they are. This book can be integrated into social studies by teaching the children the fifty states an...more

I love this book! So funny and yet still educational in teaching about the states. I spent forever reading this book because I had to look at absolutely everything on each page. If you know your states, there is obvious humor all over the place. If you aren't as familiar, you can learn WHY what's there is funny. An excellent lap-read for school-age children. (Maybe even a fun way to introduce the states to preschool children.) This is one I would love to own. And then I could learn all of the ca...more

This book is a fantastic and fun way to teach students about the geography of the 50 states. The 50 states are bored of their current locations and, led by Kansas and Nebraska, have a pot-luck dance party and decide to switch places. Of course the grass is not always greener on the other side... Each illustration is packed full of information about each state. The book also includes a table at the end where further information on each state is given.

Great for any age, I w...more

Having just returned from a cross-country trip from Pennsylvania to Montana, the kids were super excited to help me review THE SCRAMBLED STATES OF AMERICA. The package comes with both a paperback copy of the story as well as an unabridged reading of the book. The CD has a read-along section with chimes to indicate when to turn the page, and also an uninterrupted version of the story. No matter which option you choose, be it reading the book, just lis...more

This book is a delight. I think it’s adorable. It would not be good as a read aloud but is perfect for independent readers to learn U.S. states geography in a really enjoyable way. Each page is incredibly busy; there is so much to read and look at on every page. It wouldn’t flow smoothly to read it out loud but I can see literate elementary school age children pouring over it and enjoying all the detail.

Unfortunately, it was published long enough ago that the population figures are dated, but th...more

I absolutely LOVED this book! It made me laugh out loud, non-stop! It's a great way to teach geography to students in lower grades. It includes location, place, time zones, each state's unique qualities, and lots of laughs! One way to use this in your classroom would be after reading the part where all the states get mixed up, you can have them put together a class puzzle of the different states and put them in the right places. Then read on to see how the states in the story found their right s...more

My 7-year-old and I had tons of fun reading this book, in which the Midwestern states get tired of their place in the world and dream up a big moving party. The result is very cute, and a lesson in being satisfied with where and what you are. Some of the best moments happen around the periphery as states have little subplots and commentaries running throughout. A great way to stretch a child's brain and help them remember what part of the country the different states inhabit.

This book is defiantly going in my favorites pile! I love the humor in this book. What a great way to teach students about the wacky facts of the 50 states in our country. I think this book is more suitable for an older audience, some of the commentary would only apply to someone who has the intelligence to understand it. However, this book could be modified and read to an younger audience by omitting the side commentary throughout the book. :)

This one didn't really grab my boys' attention...except that Ryan was disappointed that Delaware didn't feature more prominently. From my perspective, the most entertaining parts were the side conversations between the various states; Ryan understood some but not all of the little jokes they contained, and these parts were a bit hard to read aloud without giving Ryan some context for understanding each conversation.

This is such a fun book about the states that will leave the students wanting to learn more about each state. In the book the states come together to a party where they decide to switch places. As the states decide where their new location will be the reader learns fun facts about each state including the type of weather the state haas and what it famous for. the book ofers great little jokes. It is definetly an awesome book.
Sophia
This is a great book to read to students aloud. It's about all the different states with their own personalities that pertain to that state. For example: California has shades on because it is a sunny state. All the states mingle with each other and it gives a little information about each state. It is humorous and I would recommend it for a read aloud before starting to teach students about the United States.
Thu Nguyen
It is like The Mixed Up Alphabet book. It is a fun book to teach young children about social study, such as tmap, geography, time zone and the specialty of each state. Depending on level, and age, teacher will have to select to read some or the the whole book because it is kinda lengthy, and a lot of text and conversation, But children will understand the facial expression and some jokes in this book.
Terina
The 4 year old, 6 year old, and 38 year old in my house all love this book. The 6yo can read it on her own but still enjoys the read aloud when the 4yo picks it up. We've read it so many times that the kids now add in all the asides in different "state" voices. And when homeschool started this fall, it made an excellent introduction to reading comprehension, geography, math, and writing.
Erica Tucker
This was the cutest book! I love that the states got a chance to move to different places in North America and experience what it would be like if that was their permanent place. I think this book is an excellent way to engage students in questions and draw them into remember the 50 United States. The additional facts provided at the end of the book are interesting and funny.
Sabrina
This is a funny book that can help students remember the 50 states. In the book, the 50 states are tired of the positions on the U.S. map. Various States decide to trade places to get a different change of pace. None of the states are happy once they change places. This book is great for teaching students about all the sates. It also has information about each state well known fact.
Sharon
This is a humorous story of when two states got bored with their locations and decided to throw a state party. Typical stereotypes and characteristics of each state are included in the book in a hysterical manner. At the party, the states decided to relocate and switch spots. This is an ideal book for students to learn more about distinguishing the locations of each state.
Jill
Cute kids book with several witty comments throughout the illustrations. In the back are a few facts about each state (population, state capital, state nickname, etc.). I think it will take my kids a few times through to really like it. It was a little long the first time through, but RJ requested it be read a second time soon after we finished. I take that as a good sign.
Tonia Holloway
This is one of the few history books that I actually find interesting enough to read to young kids, although they will not understand the exact concept of geography. I would picture read this book, not exactly focusing on all the words but going through the pictures and continuously going back to what Georgia is doing since that is the state we reside in.
Saashya Rodrigo
One of my favourite books! So very innovative! I think it's a book that can be read and discussed over several days, weeks and even months. The humour is at a level that even adults can appreciate. as an international student, I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its creative illustrations/storylines on the states of America.
