“We must advocate, in every way possible, the creation, visibility, and accessibility of African American children’s literature. It is easy in our complex, problem-ridden society of 1990 to be pessimistic, concluding that there is no such period as ‘childhood’ for countless African American young people. What we must remember, however, is that writers and illustrators are, quite powerfully, reflecting these realities in their work” (136).
