Do you or someone you know own a pet dog? Does your dog or your friend’s dog like playing fetching, going on walks and chewing on bones? What about playing computer games, reading the newspaper and listening to music? No?!
Well I know a dog that does and his name is Chowder. Chowder is a little different – he prefers people toys over dog toys. In fact, his favorite toy of all is a telescope called the “Far-Out Stellarscope.” He loves spending sunny days on the balcony, looking though the “stellar...more

What, there was a dog using a toilet in this book? Oh, yes, my kid did see that page and it caused quite the opposite effect that a book at bedtime should cause, but that can probably be chalked up to parental error. I'm sure there are a lot of messages to be gotten from this book but mostly we enjoyed the subtleties like pictures hanging of the wall of Chowder taken as if he was the baby of the humans in the book, and how Chowder doesn't bury bones, he escavates them to show the skeleton of a d...more
I wanted to start a list of some of our favorite children's picture books so I could remember them for future children, and to recommend to friends. I feel like it's been a while since we've found a really great children's book and thought I'd revisit some old ones with the kids.

How could anyone resist this cute picture book about a bulldog named Chowder? When it opens, readers are treated to a picture of Chowder on the toilet...then Chowder in a snuggly and on and on. It's clear from the get-go that Chowder is one special pup and his people parents are going to treat him that way. But Chowder longs for friends and not to be the strange one. So, when he sees a posting for a petting zoo, he knows he has to get there....

The illustrations are simply delightful, and the introduction had me laughing out loud. However, the book falters in its resolution; it felt a tad cumbersome, even long-winded, perhaps.
But, still immensely enjoyable for awkward-dog fans.

"Chowder" is a great book to use as a tool for teaching your students about text. The story includes different kinds of text styles, fonts, sizes and boldness to encourage students to see the importance of those words in the story. Students will also enjoy the story because it is fun and far-fetched, for example, there is a picture of Chowder using a toilet...kids will get a kick out of this story!
I actually never really got this book, but my sons think it's hilarious and charming. I guess I feel like the story and the pictures are a bit out of synch, with the pictures being stronger than the story. But since the kids are the primary audience, I gave it 4 stars to reflect their feeling about it.
Chowder is an eccentric bulldog (whose owners have a few quirks of their own), but like all of us, he wants friends who like him for who he is -- so when he hears of a petting zoo opening at the supermarket, he thinks he may have just found his crowd. Honestly, this book is a delight for the illustrations alone but the message of being true to one's self (and accepting one's own little oddities along with those of others) is sweet and lovely. I imagine anyone who owns a bulldog would love this,...more
If you are an animal lover and maybe you treat your pet like a real child than this book is for you! Chowder is very special to his owners and is different from the other neighborhood pets. You can tell that by the first page with chowder taking a bathroom break on the toliet. Funny and a cute story, my boys really enjoyed it.
