The answer can be found in the enthralling life and tragic death of one man. Amir Abbas Hoveyda was a central figure in the historic struggle between modernity and tradition in Iran--a struggle pitting Western cosmopolitanism a...more

An academic well written biography, almost like a novel. Amir Abbas Hoveyda was the long time prime minister of the last shah in Iran. No other was at the position longer than him (13 y.) since the Constitutional Revolution in 1906. He then became excecuted by Islamic revolutioners in 1979. I highly recommend the to those who are interested in recent history and current situation in Iran.

excellent insite in Iranian politics and ethics during the Pahlavi. Also explains Mr Hoveyda's masterful yet naiive approach to non-Iranians and Iranians that ultimately contributed to his demise!

An objective book about Hoveyda. Milani's command of english is amazing! ... I liked it as it gave me an insight to the Shah's regime and also the person of Hoveyda and his ultimately sad end. Can't accept his defense that he was only following the orders of the Shah ... after all he could have resigned ... but still I come out feeling sympathetic towards him as a flawed but ultimately good human being.

A must read about Iran's modern history and the story of Hoveyad - Shah's last prime minister......I was only 8 when that all happened so reading them from different point of view was very interesting.
