The corrupt officials of a small town in Tsarist Russia mistake a penniless clerk from Moscow for a government agent in Gogol's satire on the grotesque side of human nature. A play described by Vladimir Nabokov as the greatest ever written in the Russian language. Includes text, notes, commentary and background.

Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was the leader of the realist revolu

From BBC Radio 4 :
The corrupt officials of a small Russian town react with terror to the news that an inspector will soon be arriving to investigate them. Farcical tale by Gogol, adapted by Rene Basilico.

To start off I feel that suggesting that Gogol is a Russian would be a bit on an insult to the Ukrainians, especially at this point in time, particularly since his biography on Goodreads indicates that his mother was Polish and the father was a Ukranian Cossack (and he also wrote in both Russian and Ukrainian, though no doubt the languages are little more than a dialect of each other – though I would not be running around Maiden Square screaming that at this point in time).
I did not realise th

Originally published on my blog here in December 2000.

Gogol's most famous legacy may be this farce about corruption and stupidity in the local government in Tsarist Russia, but he was in fact not a political radical. He even wrote an attack on the abolition of serfdom, and spent much of his life embarrassed by the enthusiasm with which would be reformers reacted to the play. He proposed allegorical interpretations of what he had written, which would have lessened its impact if anyone had accepte

The Inspector General by Nikolai Gogol

This is outrageously funny, but with a twist. You have all the good time in the world reading or listening to it, but you might also feel pity for the people of the world who live with such administrators and crooks.
I know that one of my eyes cried with laughter and the other with bitterness.
The regime I have known was communist…corrupt to the bone by definition. This was replaced, and I played my small “revolutionary” part, being mentioned in Newsweek, on a

This play is about a dazzling prankster who posing as the Inspector General of Tsar visits a remote Ukrainian town in order to torment the local officials who are completely corrupt without exception. I have seen it on stage and enjoyed every minute.

I can not imagine anyone finding the text to be funny. I certainly did not. When performed however this play is an utter riot. Translators try to render works accurately. This forces the stage director to consult the work in the original language in

Unlike novels, or even novellas, plays focus on a micro-theme or subject matter and treat it in a way as to make the observer (or reader) think and to effect a change, possibly. Again, unlike novels and novellas which are always originally meant to be read (but which have recently been adapted to the screens), plays are written for the stage and therefore their message is taken in as and when they unfold and the curtains furl and must therefore be short and precise and employing different theatr ...more

A wonderful social satire on the Russian society which can be broadly translated and applicable in any society for that matter. All Gogol's characters are thoroughly painted with a detailed brush and the characters really stand out.
Short and sweet. Delightful little read.

As expected from Gogol, this comedy came out with underlying criticisms. In the story, the commotion began in town when gossip about the imminent arrival of general inspector was heard. Anton Antonovich, the mayor, set out to impress the general inspector despite the poor governance he had. The problem was that the general inspector came in disguise, and no one knew exactly how he looked. So Anton Antonovich hastily spot the alleged general inspector and started to make an approach.

The story is

A funny little drama that shows how bad people are. Four stars because I personally don't like dramas and because it was for school. And because I'm a bad person too.

I had to read this for school, I probably wouldn't have read this otherwise...

The play, Reviisori/The Inspector General, was okay, even funny at times. The characters were sometimes a bit hard to understand and I didn't remember who was who all the time, the Russian names were too alike : D

But Päällystakki/The Overcoat (a novel) was just weird and I didn't really like Gogol's writing style, it made me annoyed and confused. How come there's obviously an all-knowing narrator telling the main chara
