I've read fantasy novels most of my life and the ultimate-evil-that-threatens-to-rule-the-world calibre of story (ala Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings) starts to get old after awhile. So in comes Mary Brown whose plucky heroine Summer (they're all plucky if they're women), is a Cinderella who's gone out in the world to bring a hunky, yet haughty and crippled nobleman back to his faraway home. She does this with the help of some animals she's adopted along the way, which she can talk to with th...more
This was an unexpected delight to read. This is one of the most well written books I believe I have ever read. Spanning a thousand years and many nations, every step they took on their journey was a step I took beside them. The commoradie between the characters was excellent, and believable. This is what I would classify a must read for all ages.
The unexpected dragon was very confusing to me. There was some parts thst I understood but others I didn't. I didn't see the point of some parts. Basically its about how she falls inove with a dragon who can turn human. So she goes on a journey to find him. She goes through dangers on the way. But she meets new friends on the way.

I had planned to give this book 5 huge stars, but in just two quick pages the author and I had serious disagreement on how the story should go. So, I still recomend it but I'm taking one star away for my dissapointment in storyline. I would say to the author, You are a wonderful imaginative writer...but did you have a mood swing in the middle of writing or what!? I thoughly enjoyed 95% of this book, but very dissapointed in 5%.

Wow! These reviews are either love it or hate it! It has been 10 years since I've read this one. I'll have to read it again, i think before I can give it an honest rating :)

This is actually three books in one, and I've finished part 1. I really enjoy the coming-of-age story of a fat girl who becomes a beauty by walking every day for over a year on her journey. She has the help of several animals, whom she is able to communicate with thanks to her magic ring. Currently re-reading book 2. Another journey, but not as much as a coming-of-age as a desperately seeking dragons.
I had a bit of a difficult time getting into the book, but once I got into the proper mindset everything just sort of flew by. I really liked the fact that it was set in *our* world rather than some random fantasy world since that added a very different flavor to the entire piece.
There were some unanswered questions at the end of everything, but I'm okay with that.
