I recently learned that my great grandmother was a foundling in Northern Italy, so I set out to learn all I could about the practice of abandonment (I highly recommend David Kertzer's book about Italian infant abandment, "Sacrificed for Honor"). Then I was curious about life for these children. Again, I'm so lucky that there's an entire book about it! The problem was that it was really hard to get my hands on.
