Let me tell you a few things about Band. First, my credentials. I played trombone (mediocre-ly) from 4th-12th grade, so I know a thing or two about band. Second, what I know is this: trumpets think they're all that. French horns are small, trendy, and somewhat unique girls. Saxophones are a mixed breed. Clarinets are the studious ones that make the great grades, while flutes are prim and have excellent posture. Percussionists have ADD and get bored pretty easily. And trombones are the backbone o...more

If you were a band geek, you either WERE Ellie Snow, or you knew Ellie Snow. She's narcissistic and arrogant, to put it bluntly, but I still enjoyed her character. It's a pretty cute story, I admit, and fairly accurate as far as band geek life goes. My problem was just that the "twists" weren't "twisty" enough, and I think that much better things could have been done with them. But I did read this book very quickly because it held my interest and it was actually pretty cute. I enjoyed it. I rate...more

Review by Rachelle Capitaine:
This book was about a girl named Ellie who plays in the band for all her life and strict about her social life because she is not into high school boys. So Eliie winds up to be the section leader for the trumpet section and she is a senior now getting ready for college. When this one guy just decides to looking at her when she was about to play one of the most important solos for a football game. Now the guy that was looking at Ellie was Connor who we come to find ou...more

My sister gave me this book for my birthday. She probably saw the title and thought "Band Geek Love. Well my sister's in band so she'll love this!" First off, how stereotypical of her to think that I would only like band books and second off, this book wasn't even about band more so it was mainly about the TRUMPETS in band.

This book was unique and I wanted to read it since not very books have a band geek for a main charachter. When I first started reading the book, it wasn't that bad. It caught...more

This book is great for the band geek who can relate.

Aka me.

Compare me to Ellie: I am a semi-stickler section leader who is always practicing her butt off, who never gets involved with boys because of embarrassing incidents from early experience, and who lives in a world where all the musicians in high school get together and you accidentally run into them making out in the band storage room.

Sound familiar? Yeah, this book was pretty much very similar to my band life. Except that I am a flute/pic...more

As a band geek myself, I enjoyed this cute book. They was plenty of kissing, friends, and drama for my liking. At times however, the main character Ellie got on my nerves. She messed up a lot in the course of two months. She was really confused about everything most of the time. I kept trying to tell her what to do (but obviously she wasn't gonna listen to me, haha). I was happy with the ending. Everything got wrapped up in this little picalo case that is really cute and at the same time obnoxio...more

Band Geek Love, By Josie Bloss

As a former band geek, so many of the events in this book rang true to me. Ellie Snow is a trumpet section leader and super serious about band. On the last day of band camp a sophomore trumpet shows up and needs to be integrated into the line. Anyone who was in marching band knows this is a huge pain in the neck, requiring extra practice, and sometimes the rearranging of drills that everyone else has already learned. But Ellie takes it to a level unheard of in my ba...more

So there are the jocks, the cheerleaders, the Goths, the skaters, the punks, the outsider, and everything else. But whatever happened to the band geeks? Josie Bloss tells of the “other” social ladder from a point of view of an aspiring trumpeter.

Band Geek Love was an adorable read for me. There was nothing too deep that draws the more series readers in.

It was half-and-half for the characters; loved some and hated others. Ellie was a relatable character in some areas but in others I had trouble...more

Wavering between 3 and 4 stars because the main character, Ellie, is kind of a self-centered spoiled brat with strange priorities (view spoiler)[(I just made out with another guy. HOW DARE YOU NOT TELL ME WHY YOU WERE ALLOWED INTO BAND LATE, BETRAYAL!!) (hide spoiler)], and that's coming from someone who loves hard-nosed bossy people who are obsessed with order and control. Marching band is also harder to relate to than regular band.

But: ultimately, band is band, and I have spent my whole life...more

Genre: Teen Drama

Everybody has a different high school experience, ranging from being the all star sports player, or the popular who likes to cause drama. For Ellie Snow, things are a little different from the others. Ellie is a hardcore band geek at Winslow High. Her life practically revolves her trumpet, and her position as the trumpet section leader. Her and her friends, Kristen and Jake, take band very seriously, but the thing about Ellie is...more

I was expecting this book to be a kind of quick read, and it was a very quick read -- quicker than expected. And while I enjoyed the storyline, I thought it could've been executed better.

The characters were just okay. While you could relate to them, they just didn't seem real. The way they're described, they seem like normal teenagers, but then the way they act, it just isn't like normal teenagers. The way the reacted to things in different situations just didn't seem right. When I was reading c...more

Yes, I read another book about marching band, though this book is infinitely better than the last one I read (can't even remember the title, it was so awful!). This book has the main character, Ellie, a senior in high school and the trumpet section leader, get interested in a new sophomore in her section but not wanting others to find out about their relationship. I thought the characters were pretty well-written, and I did like them all. The plot was not exactly super intense but still cute, an...more

Ellie Snow is a band geek. She lives and breathes for band and has finally made it to her senior year where she's the best section leader in band for the most important section -- the trumpets. Ellie has worked hard and cannot wait until her solo at the end of band camp performance. This was going to be her shining moment and she was going to rock. Just as she was about to start playing, Ellie caught site of a gorgeous guy in t...more

Ellie is your ultimate band geek. She spends hours of her time practicing and he ultimate high school dream is to become the trumpet section leader. Now it’s Ellie’s senior year and she knows it will be her best. She is the trumpet section leader and even has a killer solo that begins the whole show. Hopefully she will even be able to finally forget about the traumatic crush she had her freshman year. Yes, that’s right, Ellie hasn’t been able to trust or like anyone since 9th grade when her crus...more

Oh, gosh. This book cracked me up and disgusted me at the same time.
First of all, it is so accurate. All the marching terms, the trumpet cockiness, etc....Oh, yeah. It was true.
In some ways it was too close to home, what with the age of Connor. Sheesh...Anyway.
Anyway, she was about as annoying as my anal band director...only then she quit caring about band which was just...weird...
I don't know. I can only give it four stars because I liked it, but I didn't like Ellie. So...yeah.

I thought the books was good, short, but good. I think one of the main reason I liked it to so much was because I am in band. I cant say I have as much passion for band as much as she does, but of course I do enjoy it very much. I really liked that she was a "tough girl" and that she was struggling between choosing two trumpet players. What Connor reveals at the end, I thought was rather hilarious, and that Ellie was over exageratting on how he didn't tell her at first. Over all it was a cute st...more

Ellie has been waiting to be trumpet section leader and have a solo for four years. This is her year. She does not need a little sophmore boy distracting her, even if he is super hot. But she does find him very distracting, and he distracts her not just from band, but from her friends too. Can she balance her first relationship, band section leader, her friends and school? Ellie was a little whiney and very self-centered. Quick read though.

I haven't made a habit of reviewing books; however, this one annoyed me so damn much that I have to say something. The plot was OK for the most part, but the characters...good god. Not a believable one in the bunch. They all act like parodies of real people. Ellie is especially unlikable: she's bitchy, nasty, immature, incredibly self-centered, and blows everything way way WAY out of proportion. I hope she matures in the sequel.

This book could have been such a great love letter to band geeks and instead featured a protagonist who made me want to throw the book at the wall.

Ellie's inability to think about anyone but herself made the book a difficult read. While there were moments that the nostalgia of being in band was accurately played up, I couldn't get past her self-centered, whiny voice.

Then again... she is a trumpet player.
Abby Johnson
Senior Ellie Snow knows that this year will be the best ever. She's trumpet section leader with her very own solo. Her best friend is drum major. Nothing will stop her!! Until an uber cute guy distracts her, causing her to flub her solo on the last day of band camp. And then she finds out that this kid is joining her section without having gone through band camp. Control-freak Ellie is pissed... until she takes a better look at him and discovers that she just might have a tiny crush on him... an...more

This book was a lot of fun. Band geek or not, if you're a fan of romantic comedies, you'll enjoy reading about Ellie and her various mishaps. Ellie is a great main character-she's strong, she's a control freak, and she's a band geek! A sequel is in the works and I'm looking forward to reading more from this debut author.

I read this in honor of Brooke (who ironically was NOT a band geek, but did participate in band). It reminded me of high school - all it's ups and downs, it's drama, and it's language (a word of caution there). I read it in two sittings, by no means a literary masterpiece, but I did enjoy the memories it invoked.
Katy
The book was cute enough, but the main character was just too b**chy for me to like. I mean, I like feisty characters, but she was just plain annoying.

Connor didn't make much of an impression on me, and I didn't think any of the other characters were written well either.

As a former band geek myself, I could easily identify with the descriptions of the microcosm of the marching band experience. Those were the best parts of the book, in fact--the parts that centered around the band stuff.

The other stuff? Not so great.

Ms T
I like the premise of the book (band geek senior finds love in the trumpet section), but the main character was pretty clueless about life and had way too many emotional issues. Her whining got on my nerves and I wanted to tell her to just get over herself already.
Julia Reynolds
I give Bloss great credit for knowing how to write--her sentences just seemed to flow together perfectly.
However, I found the book incredibly predictable and, as a result, became bored halfway through. I knew exactly where the characters were going, and as a reader I would rather be given something unexpected by the end.
I was disappointed, because I really wanted to like this book.
Andrea
I'm abandoning "Band Geek Love." I got 1/2 through and couldn't go on. I have better than things to read than a book about a horrible, stuck-up, whiny little girl and her nonexistent problems. Ugh. I have a high tolerance for BS but this is a huge NO!

I wasn't very fond of this novel. The idea of the book sounded great and intriguing but I really didn't like the story that much. If you had a choice whether or not to read it I would not, personally.

Shawna
I didn't like the main character and now that I'm thinking about it, I didn't really like any of the characters. Everything about this book was just okay for me (except the cover. I think it's fun.)
