Purple horses are okay, and ranches with cacti are always good settings, but this story just didn't click with me. I liked the first several pages. I thought this was going to be about a city person experiencing the great outdoors, or maybe about the adventures of a pig and a horse, but I didn't expect a rescue story with a vague ending. Not bad, but not a story I'd pick to read aloud.

An okay story of a city pig who goes out west to play on a ranch and meets a purple horse named Smokey. They become friends and Clarence (the pig) learns that the ranch is going to sell Smokey because he's getting old. So Clarence uses his bus fare money to buy Smokey and they set off home.

Okay illustrations.

One of my favorite children's books. A story of true friendship, respect for your elders, and adventure. Such a sweet bedtime story!

This is a great friend story about a pig who travels out west and meets a purple horse. The horse and the pig become great friends, and then the pig learns that the horse is going to be sold from the ranch. In order to keep his friend, the pig uses all of his bus money to buy the horse from the ranch. The two friends then travel all the way across the country together, having adventures on the way. This is a good book for older kids, ideally those who are interested in the old West or horses or ...more

Mostly liked this, but the ending was so out there. I was also weirded out by Clarence purchasing the Purple Horse...can you really buy your friends? I know, I know. Reading WAAAAY too much into this. I'm ok with bizarre as long as it makes sense.
