Four short stories, published as a Penguin 60, all taken from GGM's Strange Pilgrims.
Having written this review, I have now stuck it is a spoiler, as with stories so short it is hard not to give plot information... but no more than other reviews have... and I don't think I have spoiled them...

I found it quite poignant to read this collection of four stories by Marquez a few days after his passing. His texts brim with the energy and absurdity of life, which makes his short stories stand out from the many others in the Penguin 60s series. In 'Bon voyage, Mr President', dealing with the medical travails of an ousted Latin American president, power and the relationships between different levels of society are investigated on a disarmingly human scale. Power relations also come into play ...more

A short book of four short stories. I liked the main one, Bon Voyage Mr President. It’s quite a straightforward story, with none of the magical realism for which Marquez is known. The dying ex-president of a Caribbean nation is in Geneva, seeing doctors about a mysterious ailment. A man from his home nation recognises him and invites him to his house, with the initial intention of making money out of him by selling him funeral services (the man is an ambulance driver and makes extra money workin ...more

Sleeping beauty and The Airplane by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
“My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun”

While waiting at the Charles de Gaulle airport, on the way to the “jungle” of New York, the narrator has a vision:
“This was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen…
An apparition…
She was dressed with subtle taste”
There are only beautiful words to describe this seemingly wonderful woman.
Our hero is asking this strange woman:
- Do you believe in love at first sight?
- Of course, the other kinds are

Don't you hate it when you're two pages into the title story and you realize that it is sublime?

You take a deep breath and prepare to read the whole thing through. You may as well: it won't let you go until you have. And you know, of course, the intense emotions of this short sublime piece will add in some indefinable way to your experience of the world. Sublimity is rare, and genius fleeting, and Marquez a rare and exquisite pleasure to read. You may as well enjoy it.

But it's a strange story,

Beautiful. I think short stories work better for the particular prose of Marquez; the stories end long before we grow habituated to the magical metaphors explored through them.

I can't give this a rating. It's my introduction to Márquez, with the exception of a short story I can now no longer remember the name of. This is not the right place to start, I know, but it was hard to resist how cheap this book was.

The first story: Bon Voyage, Mr President is nice enough, I suppose. It's got some good character work going for it, and the interactions between those characters is handled so as to reveal more about each of them. There's nothing really wrong with it, it just didn

First of all, just wanted to say my edition was 245 pages long, so that made it difficult to me when updating my goodreads status.
Also, my book was called "Doce Cuentos Peregrinos" (Twelve Pilgrim Tales) and they were written between 1975-1980. Some of them were really short (only three pages long) and some were a bit longer, but fun to read anyways. A common point for all of them was the fact that ALL the tales took place in European countries. The characters from the stories weren't European,

I think I also bought this book at a Goodwill in Connecticut right before I left, a really short collection of short stories, like fifty pages long. One is about an exiled president who is sick, another is about a woman accidently checked into an insane asylum, then there's one about boys sailing on light, and finally a story about the author staring at a beautiful woman during a long flight. The first and longest story, about the president, is kind of like "Oh, that was it?" But it wasn't bad.. ...more

I enjoyed three of the stories, but not "I Just Came to Use the Phone." Stories about injustice make me angry, so I had to put it down.

Sucks. Read 100 Years of Solitude and really liked it. The 4 stories are: Bon Voyage, Mr President; Sleeping Beauty and the Airplane; 'I Only Came to Use the Phone'; Light is Like Water. The first three felt totally pointless. Only the last was at all worthwhile, and the only of the 4 to contain magical realism. PASS!

Unfortunately I just could not get into this short story. Being a short story, I pushed through and finished, but did not feel a sense of satisfaction upon completion. Not to say it is a poorly written story, I just was not interested or connected to the characters.
