This book had a really profound effect on me. Spencer demonstrated what it means to be a true Christian. The fact that a 16 year old boy is willing to show such humanity towards his "enemy" is very touching. I cried when I read the last page. Spencer started out as an innocent young boy who wanted to become an illustrious and famous soldier to impress a girl. I don't think I've ever read a more heartbreaking story in my life. This book was absolutely beautiful, following the tale of two young boys (one 15 and German, and the other 16 and American) who are on opposite sides during WWII. This book is about a two different teenagers, one named Dieter and the other named Spence. Spence is American while Dieter is German. When Dieter turned fifteen, he got promoted from the Hitler Youth to the German army. This book is full of suspense when Dieter got shot in the arm, someone's final act of kindness is to save him before they die. I would rate this book 4/5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes blood and gorey stuff.

As he is patching him up and dragging him towards his camp for shelter, Spencer is shot and killed by another German soldier who was coming to help Dieter. Dieter wakes up in a hospital and despite what everyone tells him, believes that the boy was just trying to help, not hurt him.

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. One reason I liked this novel was because it told the story of World War II from the perspectives of the Nazis and the Americans. Dean Hughes did a lot of research on WWII and did an exquisite job of telling their stories. He was never bias towards either side only gave actual beliefs and facts about the Axis and the Allies. Another reason why I liked this book was because it described not only the action of war, but the emotions and feelings throughout it. For example, instead of just talking about gunfire and bombs, Hughes describes the emotions of the soldiers while these events are happeneing. I also liked this book because the ending was not a happy one. It was a very sad ending that stunned me as I read it. The ending gave me a sense of the surprises and emotions that war can bring.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good war/ action story to read. It details war and the horrors and feelings it brings. The book will keep you on the edge of your seat along with a few tears here and there. I would not recommend this novel to anyone under 13 because it does mention blood, gore, and killing. It also talks about the hatred of the jews by the Nazis which can get racial and also describes the details of the concentration camps as well. All in all, "Soldier Boys" was a fantastic novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last word. (less)

I really liked the unique perspective of this story! Spence is an American teenager who join the Air Force during World War 2. He wants to prove that he is a man who can take on the challenge. Main ussue: The main issue is that Spencer is off to leave for the war and everybody doesn't want him to leave, and another thing is that him and his friend Dieter are training and are in a horrible condition and they want to go home.

They’re sick of being looked at as boys; they want to be respected as heroes and men. Both of their parents are also don’t want them to join. Dieter’s parents are concerned about his devotion to the Nazi cause. He’s been given propaganda all of his life and supports it full-heartedly, but they’re a little more cautious. However, with the Nazis turning children against their parents, there’s nothing they can do to stop him. Spencer’s Dad is worried about him losing faith while in the army. As a Mormons, his family doesn’t want him to smoke or drink alcohol like the other soldiers. They’re also concerned about his safety, and don’t think he’s ready for the army. By joining the war, these two boys from opposite sides of the world cross paths eventually, and learn what it really means to be a hero.
This was a very good book. The descriptive yet straightforward writing made it easy to follow and the pages just seemed to fly by. The action scenes were easy to follow and it felt like you were there with the characters. The format in which the author wrote it also contributed very much to the overall meaning of the book. Generally in a war story, you learn about one side’s point of view. However, by writing about characters on both sides of the war, the author makes it so you’re unable to view anyone as “the enemy”. You get to know both characters and see them as people. This made the book very moving, especially when people from both sides were dying.
I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 because it was a terrific book. I was just looking for a book that was fairly interesting to read, but this book was so much more than that. It was deep and moving, while still being action-packed and easy to read. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. It was a little descriptive about the wounds, so I guess some people wouldn’t like it because of that, but I don’t think it would bother that many people.(less)

I've always been fascinated by WW2. My mother in law was in Germany during the entire thing, she has some pretty amazing stories. This story was about an American boy, and a German boy who both signed up very young to fight. It goes through each boys story. I loved hearing both sides. I've always wanted to find more literature about the German side and how people really felt--if they could tell Hitler was evil, when they could tell etc. This gave a good insight.

I have a super soft spot for historical fiction taking place in the European Theater of World War II. It doesn't take much for me to grab a title with even a hint of that topic in the blurb. And since Band of Brothers is one of my all time favorite shows, it really isn't surprising that I picked up a book about a paratrooper.

The only real qualm I had with SOLDIER BOYS was that it ganked a scene from Band of Brothers. It doesn't take much for me to grab a title with even a hint of that topic in the blurb. And since Band of Brothers is one of my all time favorite shows, it really isn't surprising that I picked up a book about a paratrooper.

The only real qualm I had with SOLDIER BOYS was that it ganked a scene from Band of Brothers. See, when you know the show as well as I do, I can pick out nuances like that. So when Spence and his buddy get a spaghetti dinner on their day off only to have the tablecloth yanked out from under them and have to drill on a full stomach, puking all the way, my brain's going to go to episode 1, Currahee, of Band of Brothers. So I was kind of watered down bythat. Yeah, it's a good scene. In Band of Brothers. It just felt cheap seeing it somewhere else.

But other than that, the voices of both Spence and Dieter were immensely engaging. Spence is a bit of a podunk, high school drop out that, at the heart of his being, just wants to impress a girl. He keeps telling himself, even after getting word of her engagement, that what he's done wasn't for her but, well, the very fact that he kept mentioning her kind of speaks volumes. But I wasn't as engaged with Spence as I was with Dieter. Spence was a little cookie cutter for me. Not too much change going on. I liked his realism. His rationalizing basic training, considering quitting. It showed his weakness but he persevered.

Dieter, on the other hand, was static for most of the book, and ingratiatingly so. To the point where I wanted to put my hand into the book and slap the boy around. Hughes really nailed it home just how indoctrinated the HJ (Hitler Jugen/Hitler Youth) were. Dieter was unwavering until that earth shattering moment at the end of the book that completely rocked his world. I didn't get a sense of such a dramatic change in Spence as I did in Dieter, probably because Dieter was so unwavering in his beliefs. Spence rocked his own boat a little bit. He was never as steadfast in what he believed so when his tide turned, it was a little more expected. With Dieter, it was like getting hit by a truck.

I really liked the dual POVs because it's not too often that we get a story told from an Axis point of view. Hughes digs deep into the life of Dieter, makes him pop out on the page. Spence was easy and that kind of showed. His life was nonchalant for me. But Dieter's mindset must have been exceptionally hard to get into. Brainwashing is a mighty thing and the Nazis were phenomenal at it. That and the way they made people fear them. Hughes didn't hide that. The Nazis performed some serious atrocities right in front of Dieter and while it shook him, he never faltered. He still thought the same way. That's hardcore indoctrination right there.

SOLDIER BOYS is a good look into the lives of two World War II soldiers on different sides of the line. It's not like about the war but about life, about not just seeing an enemy but seeing another person doing the exact same thing you're doing on the other side of the field. It's about that realization that they're really not that different, not really. Hughes did a great job of diving into the psychology of war a little bit. If you're as interested in World War II history as I am, you'll want to pick up SOLDIER BOYS. Just beware of the Band of Brothers scene. That might throw you off a little bit if you're a fan. Otherwise, you'll sink right back in and get sucked into the story.(less)

I think the book was actually targeted more to a younger crowd (maybe middle school) so it lacked the depth that you see in more adult novels. This book was written well, and I thought the way the author told it through both Spencer and Dieter was neat and informative. I really enjoyed this book. I received my copy from the author after meeting him at a party. I asked him what he thought his best work of non-lds fiction was, and this was what he presented me with. I thought it was great YA fiction; I'd recommend it most to boys between the ages of 10 and 14 or so. It is a wonderful way to represent what it might've been like to be a boy during WWII and reads fairly quickly.

Soldier Boys by Dean Hughes is a solid book with a very compassionate and tragic storyline. However, there are a few things that prevent me from giving this book five stars. First off, let’s talk about the pros of this book. Soldier boys tells the stories of two young boys from two very different worlds; Dieter from Germany and Spence from the United States. The book starts by telling what is happening in both their lives when the war begins. Fairly quickly, Hughes skips to the time in their lives when they decide to enlist. From there, Hughes does an excellent job of telling how the boys wanted to join up to bring honor to themselves and/or their families. They were very much so under the impression that war wouldn’t be so bad and that they would be able to get through it easily. Very soon after they get into training, both boys realize what they have gotten themselves into. Hughes does a great job of telling how war wasn’t anything like either boy had thought it would be like. This book really shows the true face of war and how it’s nothing like most people think it is. Hughes also was able to show how war is never anything like people think it is and how you can’t know the true horrors of war without experiencing it firsthand. Dieter and Spence had no idea what they were getting into and they regretted their choices as soon as they experienced the spine-tingling tragedies of war. In terms of Dieter, he realizes that everyone in the German army doesn’t think like Hitler; and that some of them don’t even agree with his choices. He realizes that loyalty can be misplaced and a leader, no matter how influential, can be wrong. Although this is a great book, there are a few things that keep me from giving it a five-star rating. First off, this is one of the many few books that I wish was longer because I actually enjoyed it that much. However, there are also a good amount of grammatical errors that can disturb the flow of the book. Finally, the timeline of the story was out of order in some instances. Despite these few flaws, I highly recommend this book to any that enjoys dramatic historical fiction books with a powerful message that all should know.

A simple little story, but moving and deeply sad. The story follows the experiences, parallel in some ways, of two teenage boys who can't wait to get into the fighting in World War II. One is American, one German.

I really liked this book. It was so sad that it left me sobbing at the end. Soldier Boys is a heart throb about two boys on opposite sides of the war who each fight for the same reasons: to protect their country and family, and to prove themselves men.

This is a book that will have you at the edge of your seat waiting anxiously to see if things turn out alright, and if they will ever be able to return home again.

Great WWII story for middle readers! I really liked the fact that this book wasn't a black and white war story. The novel follows two boys from the beginning of the war to the end. One boy is an American and the other is a German boy from the Hitler Youth. Both desperately want to join the war before it ends to prove their manliness, courage, and loyalty. You can imagine what happens once they both actually enter the fight. Both characters are easy for young teens to relate to.

A Nazi soldier's perspective juxtaposed to an American Mormon soldier's point of view, and of course, they come together in battle. I'm definitely recommending this novel to my middle school students, especially my boys who are really interested in WWII, and I think it's an excellent choice for any young adult. I read this book in about two hours. It is the parallel story of two young men, one German and one American, during WWII. Both are anxious to prove themselves in the adventure that is the war, but as the story progresses their image of war and the enemy is challenged. It has some pretty gruesome fighting scenes, but the language and sexual content is clean. I would highly recommend this to teens 16 years and older as an honest depiction of the hellishness of war.
