A fun book about Halloween. When I saw that the book was a collaboration between Eve Bunting and Jan Brett, I just had to take a peek. Certainly not our favorite story, but Jan Brett's illustrations never disappoint.
This book was selected as one of the October 2011 - Autumn and Halloween reads at the Picture-Book Club in the Children's Books Group here at Goodreads.

This is a delightful book in which the narrator is a group of cats hiding under the house because they are scared of the things that come with Halloween. Scared of skeletons and ghosts and vampires and werewolves and witches and goblins, but remain safe under the house. it is then when an unknown creature is "crashing, smashing at the door" when the audience realizes all the scary things the cats have seen tonight are merely kids dressed up on Halloween going Trick-or-Treating. The unknown creat...more
This book is about Halloween night told from the perspective of unknown eyes peering out from underneath a creepy porch. It describes all of the scary creatures that are outside on this night. There is a skeleton, ghost, witches, werewolves, and more out wondering around on "dreaded Halloween." The mummy walks on the porch above the mysterious eyes. When the mummy leaves it is revealed to the reader that it is just a little boy trick or treating. When he is gone the eyes run out from the porch a...more
I was reading this book for the Goodreads Children’s Book Club and it was an alright read. “Scary, Scary Halloween” is a Halloween children’s book by Eve Bunting along with illustrations by Jan Brett and it details the true spirit of Halloween as children are seen dressed up in different Halloween creatures while a pair of green eyes watch their every move. “Scary, Scary Halloween” might have beautiful illustrations, but the story is a bit too average for some children.

Halloween being one of my favorite holidays I was very excited to read this book. I think I had heard this story as a youngster, some of the illustrations seemed pretty familiar. The story used some rhyming aspects throughout the story, and for me at some points made the story hard to read, then again I am not a very good reader. The illustrations in the book are the selling point for me, loved the artwork. The use of color, contrast, an...more

I loved the illustrations on the inside front/back covers. They whetted my appetite for the book. Then, things got a little bit scary, as the title warned. Not really, but I’d have been temporarily tense if I’d had this read to me as a small child. I think it’s just scary enough, and just cute enough, not too much of either.
I enjoyed the illustrations but my favorite remain the ones on the inside covers. And, the trick of treat treats shown in one illustration would have been a bit of a disappo...more

This was my absolute favorite book as a little kid! I think it was the mysteriousness of it, and I loved the pictures. I still have this book in a reserved little kids' section of my bookshelf (I'm weird like that. Just because I'm nearly a legal adult doesn't mean I can't own a little kids' book or two!! *faux defensiveness*) My copy is taped together because I read through it so many times as a kid. It's just a great little book that isn't scary in the end, but still gives the mysterious, fes...more
Notes: Scary, Scary Halloween, by: Eve Bunting is a book that should be introduced to students before Halloween.
Book Review: Eve Bunting creates a book about Halloween and how things come out on Halloween. Below the porch of the house, one sees eyes and the eyes begin to talk and worry that these skeletons, devil, witches, etc. are coming for them. Little do they know they are people dressed up trick-or-treating. At the end of the book the author shows that the eyes that we seen under the porch...more

This book was about Halloween and all the spooky creepy crawlers of the night. The words flowed together really well and I think it added to the theme of the book. It had rhythm and rhyme to it and I can see how kids appeal to that. Also, it is all about Halloween, which kids also love. Overall I found the book to be average. It wasn't bad, but it didn't make me say "WOW!". Regardless I think it is a book kids will enjoy. I would say this book is appropriate for first or second grade. It is prob...more
This is a poem about Halloween, told from the point of view of a family of cats observing the parade of costumed characters from underneath a porch. ("A ghost goes trailing, drifting by/With sunken mouth and sunken eye./Ghosts rise on Halloween.") It's a quiet book that touches on a lot of the different kind of ghoulish costumes kids may see on Halloween (ghosts, skeletons, vampires, etc.) in a way that's quiet and reassuring rather than scary. Brett's illustrations are, as ever, detailed, and t...more
I think that this book is supper cute!! I will defiantly read this book to my class on halloween! Reasons why I love this book so much are because it lists out all the scary things that you can see on halloween, which I think would be great for many different lessons. I also really love the way in which this book flows, it rhymes and is a very easy book to read. I think that this book would keep students attention and would be a great read aloud for anywhere from kindergarden to second grade. Th...more

I loved the first page of this story with two green eyes peering out of the darkness and the line, "I peer outside, there's something there. That makes me shiver, spikes my hair. It must be Halloween." It really captures the mood of Halloween. The next pages of text and illustrations highlight the creepy creatures we might see at Halloween. My son enjoyed the pages that had the green eyes peeking out the most and just loved the ending but I think he would have loved to see more of them and less...more
What a fun and spooky story. This book would definitely be fun to read around Halloween time in the classroom. It contains every scary creature you can imagine from ghosts, to bats, to witches, and cats. I enjoyed reading the book, mainly because it is a rhyming book. I also really liked the illustrations of all the spooky characters. I think kids will get a thrill out of this one, as well as be a little spooked. The end had a little twist, with cats lurking throughout the book. I liked the stor...more
Four pairs of eyes stare from the blackness to watch fearsome creatures trick-or-treat. "Carefully planned and executed, illustrations & text nicely unified, this is well designed for group use & a fine introduction to Halloween story programs." -School Library Journal (Goodreads Summary)

Scary, Scary Halloween is a book that I used to read with my dad every year. It is written in verse, with one page per spread, and the illustrations are beautiful with just the right amount of creepiness for young readers. I remember being captivated by the first page, which features two eyes peering out of the darkness and the line, "I peer outside, there's something there / That makes me shiver, spikes my hair / It must be Halloween." Eve Bunting has written another very good Halloween book.
I love the eerie sensibility that is created by the glowing eyes under the porch, as they witness the strange activities of Halloween night. We don't know to whom these eyes belong until late in the book, leaving us with something else to wonder about as the night becomes filled with creatures of every scary sort imaginable.
I like this book, and would give it a definite one and a half stars.

Scary, Scary Halloween is told from the animals' perspective. I enjoy this perspective and have often considered it. Say you're a squirrel, or a dog or cat. All year long, everything is normal, and then once a year all these crazy things happen (kids dressed in costumes, everyone is walking around the neighborhood in the dark, funny sounds, funny music)! It's a cute one.

This is a fun one! I enjoyed Bunting's rhymes, the excellent cast of Halloween-y characters parading by, and the "surprise" ending.
I would never have guessed that Jan Brett is the illustrator!!! This is such a far cry from her current style and I really didn't find anything remarkable or distinctive about the illustrations but the story is still a fun one.

There's such a huge difference between the quality of children's literature from the '80s and the children's literature of other eras. '80s books are just so good. Though the text in this book is short and simple, it was clearly written with an eye for craft and style. Just spooky enough to be appealing, not scary enough to give any kids nightmares.
It's the night of Halloween and a mother and her children hide as they watch the monsters go by. They see ghosts, witches, a vampire, a werewolf and a skeleton all out celebrating Halloween.
The story is fun, the pictures are great and I just really enjoyed it. I liked it so much I read it twice!

I chose this book because I love author Eve Bunting. Although this was not one of my favorite that books she has written, I liked how it was Holiday themed. This book would be great to read to students around Halloween. The illustrations are nicely done. I think this book could be used with students in kindergarden all the way to 2nd grade.

I read this to my class every year as well as my daughter the past two years. They quickly learn the repition with you and read it along with you, which I love! The pictures are great, while being realistic but not being too scary for kids. This is a great story to get kids excited for Halloween and kind of show what it's about, dressing up, trick or treating, etc. showing trick or treaters in costumes along a road.

Cute little rhyming Halloween book. Julia enjoyed it, it was fun to read, the best part was the end when you find out who exactly is telling the story.
