I felt a bit blue last night as I finished Fire Study, the third and final volume in Maria V. Snyder's Study Trilogy. Though she is currently working on a new series following a side character from the Study books, this is the last one to center on the adventures of Yelena, the convicted murderer, turned poison taster, turned diplomatic liaison. I felt blue because I'd been expecting more and I ended up finishing it more out of a f...more

This is the third in the series started with Magic Study and, like the first two, it's a fairly quick-paced and easy read. I've been surprised at how good the series is, considering Mira is a division of Harlequin...and knowing that publisher I don't expect much.

This book, the third in the Yelena Zaltana series, is the kind of rollicking read I've come to expect from Maria V. Snyder. Yelena's newly discovered Soulfinder abilities rouse the suspicions of people around her, particularly the mages of the Sitian Council. When news comes that an old enemy may be plotting against her homeland, Yelena and a group of companions including her brother and her mentor, the Story Weaver called Moon Man, set off in pursuit. I'll stop there to avoid spoilers, but pl...more

Eh. This is the 3rd (and final?) installment of Yelena's series (Poison Study, which was great, Magic Story, which was ok). This was just ok, too. Poison study was great in large part because the setting/castle was almost a character in the book as well - you really felt like you were there, trapped in the walls with Yelena. In the two subsequent books, she moves around a lot, and it doesn't feel as grounded, and of course there are a lot more characters to introduce, and the whole thing jus...more

The conclusion to Snyder's trilogy about a prisoner turned poison taster turned magician resolves the major plot threads while leaving the door open for future books about this fascinating world. I've noticed over the course of the trilogy that the characters' actions infer a well-drawn psychological arc motivating them, but that the arc itself is rarely explicitly addressed -- excepting of course the main character, Yelena. This can occasionally make side characters' changes of heart seem abru...more

I originally gave this book five stars. I recently re-read the series (What!?! I was without a book stranded in AK) Anyway, I think my enthusiasm from the first two books during my original read is the reason behind the fifth star. Second round, this book rehashes SO much. A good third of the book is spent telling back story. I can understand that in the first chapter, or even the second. But Snyder rehashes every third page. I just read the first two! I don't need a refresher on on the ...more

Ugh. Well, I was obsessed with Poison Study, and Magic Study was pretty good, but this book really didn't satisfy. I found myself skimming it a lot, and I felt bad doing it.
For some reason the whole reason I liked the series in the first place dwindled throughout this concluding novel to where I forgot what charmed me in the first place. It wasn't horrible, just not the direction I wanted or expected it to go. I guess an author has to do what he/she thinks the series should do, but i...more

So I really enjoyed how things were wrapped up. I think this was much more 'complicated' than the first two, when it came to the magic and how it weaved itself into the story and it's explanation on how it worked, which I really loved. At times I was confused, but by the end I saw how it all came together (I'll probably reread it eventually to catch all the things I missed first go around).
I liked Yelena and Valek and all the other characters. My only problem was with Leif. He seemed to ...more

I really enjoyed this third book from Maria Snyder. I look forward to reading the next book by her which is about another character from this world which we met - Opal. I loved that these three were packed with action, magic and a romance (not sex). I will say that one thing that I did find very distracting in this book was the way that Maria rehashed or mentioned things over and over again in order to help a reader remember things from her other two books. Or, actually, even remember things ...more

The third and final book in the Study trilogy is as satisfying and wonderful as the rest. Mere weeks after the close of the last book, Yelena is trying to hunt down the killer she captured in book 2. When she finds him however, she uncovers a deeper plot that threatens all of Sitia and Ixia.
The twists and turns are rapid and well done and each piece of the story lays the foundation for later events. It's very satisfying to see all the threads comes together and realize the significance of e...more

This was the 3rd book in an excellent series! (Poison Study and Magic Study are books 1 & 2) It is an adult fantasy series, but book 1 doesn't have that fantasy "feel" to it. It has a really straight forward story that is intriguing and really enjoyable. By the time you've gotten into the more fantasy elements of the books, you already know the characters and their backgrounds. If you can't tell, I enjoy fantasy, but I don't like the whole "being suddenly immersed into a whole...more

A very readable 3rd novel in this series which somewhat reminds me of early Patricia Wrede. No big ideas or novel story-lines, but they do feature solid world-building and interesting, if somewhat static, characters. The novel starts out with Yelena putting off her studies once again, to travel and discover the fate of the bad guys from the previous novel. It turns out they're out to conquer the world, in a rather nasty way. Fortunately, Yelena finally discovers the full reach of her power by th...more

Fire Study is the third book in the Study/Yelena Zaltana series by Maria V. Snyder.
Now that Yelena is a Soulfinder the stakes have been raised. On a quest to recapture the Soulstealer, Yelena comes upon a bigger plot that could affect both Sitia and Ixia. The once lost daughter of Sitia has more enemies, new and old to attend with. Danger around every corner will leave you on the edge of you seat. Intigue, traitors about, lots of traveling and a little romance. I did enjoyed this installment...more

This was fun and picked up pretty much where the last book (Magic Study) left off. It was a good read, it is feeling a touch formulaic, although I suppose it just follows the hero vs. the big bad, but it feels very much like the other two books. The good in the good read part of my review is that it is nice to see where and how the main character Yalena is evolving. I am looking forward to the next book, as you can tell from the end of this one that Snyder intends another book, but I won't be i...more

Unfortunately, this series has gone the way of many "chicks-who-kick-butt" stories go, where apparently no one is capable of doing anything (or thinking, or even desiring to think, for that matter) except for the unflappable, clever, sarcastic heroine. The voice has become modern/mainstream enough that it kills the other-world feel (this Pegasus is lacking true wings). There's some creativity to the world and magic system, so I still enjoyed the book, even if the characters have beco...more

I took a big break in reading this book. At page 200 it got a lot better. Interesting story still. Lots of things seem unexpected. It was kind of annoying with Valek and Yelena. Seemed like they had sex a lot (although I don't think it explicitly says so.) But I didn't care for parts leading up to that and after...so it was kind of annoying the author wrote all that in. I could have done without it.) But I will say the whole series is an unusual story. But I am also glad I'm finally done reading...more
