With a grand title like "The Ammorite Language of the Iron Age", you might be tempted to think we have enough information to produce a detailed morphology and lexicon of the language of Israel's neighbors. But you would be nearly completely wrong. We can make some educated statements about the use of mater lectionis and onomasticon in Ammonite. A few items of vocabulary are distinguishable, but when all the extant literature of a language can be written on less than half a page of modern type, ...more

Kent P. Jackson is a professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. He was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and graduated from BYU with a B.A. in ancient studies. He then earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in ancient Near Eastern studies from the University of Michigan. He joined the BYU faculty in 1980.
