I'm sorry, but this book is the biggest pile of rubbish I've ever encountered. For one thing, don't refer to me as a "whore" or a "bitch" if you want me to buy your book or your ideas. I have no objection to the use of "Bitch" in the title - the word can be used cleverly and non-degradingly - but these authors clearly don't understand subtlety and sarcasm. They insult you from page one, and don't quit till the end. Nice. Really nice. I guess that's what being a "...more

Torn.
Cheating a bit, since I haven't finished reading it yet, probably shouldn't rate it yet. It was a Christmas gift, and I'm not sure if I thanked my dad sincerely enough for it. Apparently it's a sequel/supplement to Skinny Bitch, a New York Times bestselling diet book written by a former model and former modeling agent--basically, it's a vegan weight-loss cookbook full of pithy commentary and snarkery.
Now, I loves me some pithy commentary and snarkery--and so far th...more

REVIEW UPDATE:
So, I've had this book a while now, and I decided it's not for me. Though I did think it was funny (I wasn't insulted by the "bitches" and "whores" name calling), I honestly can't become a vegan. I love meat and dairy too much!! I tried a few recipes that left me feeling full but not SATISFIED.
This book is misleading in that it doesn't clearly let you know that it is a vegan book...and I don't like the way they look down on non-vegans. Sorry but we ...more

OK, honestly, I don't write reviews a lot because I simply don't have time to review every book I've read, but I'll make an exception for this one. This book is an insulting pile of trash. It insinuates that every person who chooses not to be vegan will eventually get cancer, have a miscarriage, be obese, or get a brain tumor. Most of the "facts" that these "bitches" use to support their evidence that being vegan is the way to go are based on junk science. This whole book is ...more

this is the most ridiculous book i have ever read. condescending. overly self-righteous crap. the couple chapters regarding animal use were especially infuriating considering that i work with animals. the authors don't even recognize local/small operation alternatives to corporate farming. they throw the word 'organic' around like it means something while simultaneously bashing the authority that enforces the word, the USDA.

This cookbook has what seems like a handful of decent recipes and a ton more that rely really heavily on meat and cheese substitutes, which aren't really all that healthy and shouldn't really be an every day menu item. I mean, seriously. There was a "recipe" in this "cookbook" that told you how to make a vegan burger. Basically, you put a vegan burger patty onto a bun with some toppings. OMG, seriously? I think it's aimed at people who eat meat but are transitioning into a ve...more

My feminist sensibilities have some issues with the tone (and title) of this book. I feel as though the authors felt they had to couch veganism and healthful eating in the vernacular of "chick lit" for it to be accessible. Unfortunately, I think it *will* make it more accessible to some women.
But I personally found the tone (in comments on the recipes) to be grating and a little disingenuous.

While I like the conversational tone of the book, the recipes did not appeal to me. Some sounded good but too many of them were either over-complicated or relied too heavily on fake meat products. As a new vegetarian, I am trying to "start with the basics" using vegetables and grains as the main ingredients. Not just take your old recipes and replace the meat with an over-processed soy product.

I didn't like this book. They authors are rude, and advocate the usage of soy in nearly every recipe. I gave the book away within two hours of buying it. Or was it the next day? I don't know, but it was fairly quickly.

Okay... as a vegetarian, I find most of the recipes right up my ally. I do eat milk and cheese, so in some cases I substituted "out" the vegan cheeses and bits.
However, I have yet to make a recipe out of the book I don't absolutely love. Even my carnivorous boyfriend asks me all the time for the enchiladas and stuffed mushrooms. I just made the Pad Thai last night and, like everything else so far, it was a hit.

This book was given to me as a gift. I recently lost weight with Weight Watchers (a much healthier way to loose weight and still have your self-esteem intact). A family member thought this would be a great present for me. I was excited for another cookbook (I LOVE to cook). But as I started flipping through the book, I realized it's a vegan cookbook. Nowhere on the outside does it tell you this. I don't feel like that's really a healthy way to eat and was thoroughly disappointed by what I found....more

A lot of the criticism in reader reviews for this book regards the "hidden" agenda of promoting veganism. I actually really liked that this book is not sold as a vegan cookbook or guide to veganism or whatever. There are some really good recipes in here for meals that do not include meat, dairy, or eggs, and even meat-eaters can benefit from working a few whole-grain-and-veggie-based meals into their repertoires. For people who are already well-versed in veganism, there aren't a who...more

So as a new vegetarian (6 Mos Meatless...), and without reading Skinny Bitch but hearing the buzz, I thought this would be a great way to give myself a jump start. No luck... I'm a compulsive book buyer with several un-cracked spines on my shelf but this I flipped through and took back! I'm all for giving people some general direction to help the cause and totally agree that the easiest recipes are the ones you're going to make again and again but I'm just not a big substitute fan. I guess ma...more

It was an interesting read. Certainly different then the normal books. Cussing and smart-ass remarks are all through the book. What I didn't realize was that the book is very much supporting vegetarianism. I thought it was general health/diet, but they focused quite a bit of time on telling people why they shouldn't eat meat.
While it appeared they did a lot of research (tons and tons and tons of citations), they also made random comments that sounded like they were totally making st...more

IT HAS ARRIVED! The goods: they cut to the chase and, after what they call a Cliff Note version of SB, got straight to the recipes, all of which appear hella easy. If Veganomicon is for impressing the hell out of your friends, SB is the kind of stuff you make on a weeknight when you're going to stay in and watch The Office. The kind of food you can make every day. I also enjoy that they call themselves "total pigs" and say "what's better than eating?" WHAT IS?! My only compl...more

Ok....first of I loved this book. I have bought and read both "Skinny Bitch" and this one and no, I was NOT offended by the title. The humor, sarcasm and bluntness was much appreciated since in my opinion, society has become waaaaay too accomodating and accepting of obesity. I have been on both sides of the spectrum in terms of struggling with weight and it wasn't until three yrs ago after a major health scare at the age of 30 that I was made the change and became a vegetarian. Delicous recipes REALLY!!! As long as you stick to the ingredients...however hard they may be to hunt down depending on how plugged in your town is. The women that wrote this cook book really considered comfort foods and turned them into something healthy and non-threatening...well as long as you aren't afraid of seitan, tofu, or tempeh. Give it a shot...it certainly won't kill you but that burger at BK just might!

OK, these are great vegan recipes and some funny moticational intro pragraphs, but please, I am neither a hungry girl nor someone who cares how hot they look...I am just lightening up my protein choices and favoring vegetable over animal, but this is a good cookbook. Have my doubts about cooking with refined coconut oil...I just don;t use hight heat when I use olive oil. Nuff said.

A cookbook for hungry girls who don't mind going vegan in order to get healthy(and maybe lose some weight). I don't know if these recipes will actually help with weight loss if you already eat healthy, but the ones I've tried so far are pretty tasty. Plus, I love the irreverent, in-your-face approach to cooking and eating healthy.
