This was an awesome book. I really started this about 4 months ago, though. It took awhile because I more studied it than just read it. It brought me to a conviction throughout the book. I have a hunger to do the fasting. The corporate fasting that Jentezen Franklin's church does brings even more power. You also realize that if you start your year out with fasting, it just seems to bless the whole year! This is a teaching book, but many testimonials inside. This is a MUST read! But, if you are n...more

Awesome book! Very informative and well-written! I have already begun to make fasting a regular part of my spiritual life and plan to join the 21-day fast at the beginning of 2012! =)
Oh dear. From the subtitle, and from the reviews of other readers, I hoped for so much more. But this introduction to the neglected discipline of fasting was so disappointing, so shallow.
The fine print on the pages following the title page reveals Franklin's true opinions. "Previously published...as Fasting: The Private Discipline That Brings Public Reward (copyright 2004) and Fasting: Opening a Door to God's Promises (copyright 2006)." Stripped of its new cover (figuratively speaking), the book...more

Fasting is an important discipline that we often overlook. I've visited several churches in the last year, and I heard many many messages about prayer, a few about giving (tithing, especially), and none about fasting.
I know that I have fallen into thinking of fasting as giving up any variety of things in order to focus more on God (and usually time management). This book was a good reminder of the importance of giving up some or all food and learning to hunger for God.

Let's face it, Fasting is hard. It's hard to die. It's hard to die to your flesh and be sanctified by the sharp razor of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Besides according to Jesus, we are not to let anyone know we are fasting when we are doing it. This means that you don't get any encouragement from others simply because they don't know - and mustn't know. The last time I fasted was particularly difficult for some reason. Maybe it's the nature of the battle. Maybe it's the nature of the vic...more
I have fasted before... 7 day fasts to clean out my system, 3 day fasts to seek an answer to a pressing problem... but I have never fasted for 21 days or 40 days. It was nice to read the biblical teachings on fasting (though I must confess they were dealt with somewhat superficially and I would like to further study this out on my own). It was also inspiring to hear the testimonies of people who had committed to the 21 day (or longer) fast.

Okay. I thought it was a good book because the lessons in it has given me some motivation to fast and pray. I am definitely considering it more in my spiritual walk with God. However, I was not really convinced and somewhat troubled by all the anecdotal evidence that he has used in this book to convince readers that what he said is correct. I can go into more detail about this, but I won't unless people here respond and really wish to hear it. In short, this man heads a large church that sees at...more
If you are reading this book because you want to learn about different types of fasting and how each of them differ, than this is your book. Other than that I don't think I was a big fan of it. Franklin seems to say that the only reason to fast is to see the blessings come rolling in. He gives example after example of blessings he and others have received because of fasting. I am not an expert on fasting by any means, but it seems to me that this is a very shallow way to approach it. I would hav...more

Oh my! Here's a clear guildline on fasting, why you should, why you should not...a must read for every one. Go get it. Better yet: Amazon.com. Love that convenience.
Unpopular and often misunderstood discipline, but super powerful. Fasting's been neglected far too long in the western church, and Jentezen Franklin introduces the subject with some basic and clear foundations. His explanation for what Christian fasting is - and what it is not - along with his personal stories personally challenged me when I first read the original version six years ago.

Good book, but mostly testimonies (which are great for building faith).
Unfortunately, there were a few principals he makes in the book that he seems to support biblically, but the scriptures he uses to support them are stretched QUITE a bit to make his point, and he often gets quite inventive with how he uses scripture to back up some of his points. This only happened a small handful of times, and the points he made were good and I will take and apply to my life, but I can not say it is a biblic...more

Great book for Christians; in fact its so so crucial to read if you're a Christian, in my opinion. Franklin brings up a fantastic point about the importance of fasting when he tells us of Jesus's fast in the desert for 40 days, and how only afterwards was He able to start performing the miracles we read about in the gospels; He had to fast in order to undo what damage was done so many years before in the Garden of Eden. If even Jesus needed to fast to receive great healing power, how much more...more
This is an outstanding book on fasting. This book really encouraged me when I was on a fast. It is full of practical ideas of what to do when fasting as well as testimonies of people beleiving God to move on their or their family's behalf for breakthroughs that they did receive as a result of fasting and prayer. If you have never fasted or if you have fasted for years, GET THIS BOOK!! This is a MUST READ!!!!
This book truly gave me insight into fasting!!!
A great read for someone who has questions on fasting and wants to understand what it is all about. It also explains clearly how fasting is not so much about starving yourself, but unplugging yourself from certain things and plugging in to your relationship with Jesus.

Plenty of reasons why one should fast are presented in this book. I don't like that the author presented this as the solution for everything wrong in ones life, but I can see how this dedication to God can enhance one's prayer life. Ido wish there was more description on how to fast and what his church did for their 40 days of fasting. I can see how this book could be very encouraging to read while participating in a fast.
This book will motivate you to fast. It clearly lays out the heredity we, as believers, have in fasting. It covers heroes in the faith who fasted and chronicles all the benefits we can reap from fasting. Lots of biblical proof and modern day examples to lay a case for adding fasting to your spiritual disciplines.

I'm reading this book in preparation for the 21 day Daniel fast our church is starting on Jan 5, 2009. Even though I was raised to fast and did the Daniel fast last year, this book is helping me to keep things in perspective and teaching me to glean the most from my fasts for spiritual growth.
AMAZING book! This is the best spiritually uplifting and empowering book I've read since "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. If you've ever wondered about fasting, the reasons behind it, and what it can do then this book is a must read. For those who want to get a new experience from God in their lives, the principles about fasting in this book (and fasting itself) can totally change your life!
I think I can understand the concept of fasting as dying to self and demonstrating faith that God will provide what I need, so I should focus on other things more than the physical. My beef (mmmm) with the book would be that there are many examples of miracles experienced because of fasting, and although I have no reason to doubt them, the reader may think that fasting will lead immediately to riches and health, when that is not really the point. The author points out that in Matt. 6, Jesus talk...more
