4 ½ stars – Romantic Suspense

No Regrets is a pretty good romantic suspense read. The plot involves a terrorist organization’s (called the Swarm, which to me sounds more silly than it does scary) pursuit of bookworm cryptologist Noelle whom they want to crack an unbreakable code in order to steal nuclear weapons leftover from the Cold War. The CIA dispatch ex-special forces Delta Force operative David Wolfe to protect her and to persuade her to break the code for the good guys. David is a typical...more

Usually I try to do these Romance Roundups after reading a handful of paperback romances. This time, that handful just happens to be a trilogy written by Shannon K. Butcher (her husband, Jim Butcher, writes the Dresden Files books). Usually I try to find some unifying characteristic between the books in each roundup. Besides the obvious reason for the books being a trilogy (the three heroes are best friends and served together in the Delta Force [a vaguely described top-secret special ops divisi...more

David Wolfe left Delta Force two years ago after the violent death of his wife, Mary. One day he's approached by his superior, who tells him that he's being called back in to protect a female scientist who is being targeted by the Russian terrorist group, The Swarm. David's guilt over not having been able to save his wife is incentive enough for him to accept the mission and get his revenge on the people who killed his wife.

Noelle Blanche is one of six of the most intelligent cryptologists in t...more

I must say I am a bit disappointed, but maybe I expected too much.Since I had the second one "no control" for a wile and it was one of my favorites I kinda expected this one to live up to my expectations.Well...it didn't but it was quite a nice read.
It started really well. The whole idea was intriguing and the characters have debt, but somewhere in the middle it kind of lost me. David just kept repeating he didn't wanna live trough the same thing that happened with his wife. I understand that he l...more

Talented writer. Excellent writing style. Well done romantic suspense.

STORY BRIEF:
Information about hidden nuclear weapons has been encoded in a document. No cryptologist has been able to decode it. The Swarm is a group of bad guys who plan to kidnap Noelle and force her to decode it for them. Noelle is an Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematical Linguistics. She does cryptology as a hobby. The US military has repeatedly asked Noelle to work for them, but she refuses because she hates violenc...more

4.5 Stars.

I really liked this book and it is interesting how I found it... It came up a few times on my GR recommendation and so I go to B&N to check the price and it was $7.99 or more, so I marked it to read and then thought to wait until I heard more about it or it came down in price. It came down in price and I needed a good book, so TOP of the TBR pile [kudo's to the marketing ploy - worked on me!!].

I really loved David. And, Noelle seemed like a friend. We all have those quirky friends...more

I admit to being swayed in the direction of this series by browsing the author’s website, the reviews on this site, and the fact romantic suspense is one of my favorite romance genre (with PNR still being in the top spot).
I read this author’s first venture into the PNR world, and though it was similar to my two favorite series, I still wasn’t disappointed with her writing style, so I decided to give her RS work a go.

And I must say it "satisfied" me more than her paranormal work.

This was an almos...more

This book was decent. The first half dragged quite a bit and I kept putting it down for 2 or 3 days. It picked up during the second half and I finished it in about an hour. If you're looking for a nice middle of the road read and you're not too picky, it should suit. The plot made sense even if it wasn't one of my favorite types (more on that below). The romance element was nicely done. Especially in the second half of the book. Still, it had a few problems that may matter more to me than to oth...more

Shannon K. Butcher's debut novel, No Regrets, is a swift and pleasant jaunt through romantic suspense land. Nothing terribly surprising; there are a lot of familiar tropes here, and they get handled in a lot of familiar ways. Cryptologist Noelle Blanche must be protected from terrorists out to kidnap her, and ex-military operative David Wolfe steps up to the plate to take on the job. Chemistry springs up between the two while bullets start flying, and Noelle must make a call between standing fir...more

It was decent. It has first book syndrome. It had pacing issues where as I was reading I was thinking "Please, please, please move on" or "Ok bla bla bla, yada yada yada, boring." However, I enjoyed Shannon's writing, and her easy to read style. There was a bit of repetition. David had the "I want her but can't have her" inner monologue quite a bit, and there were some plot holes that lacked depth and you had to just go with it. The romance was pretty steamy, and when they gave in to it, they re...more

Review for No Regrets, No Control, and No Escape.
This is the second time I've read this trilogy by Shannon Butcher, wife of Jim Butcher (of Harry Dresden fame.)
On the surface, they're typical romantic suspense with alpha type heroes coming to the rescue of damsels in distress. What I love about Shannon is that there's more below the surface. Her heroes are luscious and very likable. They're a bit flawed and vulnerable as well. The heroines are in peril, but at the same time, they are strong wom...more

Book #3 of 2010

I'm not really sure what to think of this book. It had a decent storyline and combined two of my favorite genres. But... I wonder if anyone actually edited this book before it went to market? It was things like the main character's name changing from David to Daniel in one paragraph or someone ignoring a statment that no one made. A phantom statement perhaps? And how exactly did someone follow the two of them to the middle of nowhere when he'd been at least an hour behind them?

A great read, but I had a hard time swallowing the ending.

(view spoiler)[ First off, the Owen guy was caught and killed off too easily for my liking. He was supposedly the top guy in the Swarm and very evil. I'd expected him to survive the raid and make a come back in book #2 at least. The top evil guy is usually very hard to kill, it's the rule...

And secondly the way David just gave up on Noelle and decided to leave her all together. That was not very gentlemanly of him, which he prided himsel

A intense and suspenceful story of cryptologist Noelle Blanche and Delta Force operative David Wolfe. The government has requested Noelle's help in decyphering a cryptic text in hopes of discovering the location of hidden war heads before they are found by the terrorist group, The Swarm. The Swarm is also after Noelle's special talents. David is sent to protect her. David have vowed revenge on teh Swarm after the brutal rape and murder of his beloved wife, Mary. Guilt over his wife's death has h...more

I actually give this 3.5 stars. I liked it alot but there were things that really bothered me that kept it from being rated any higher. This is a tortured action hero/meets geeky girl story. And boy is David tortured. He is still suffering over the death of his wife when he meets up with Noelle. He is sent to protect her from some really bad guys as she is able to decipher codes. They feel immediate chemistry. I like the storyline and the writing is good. But the suspense falls somewhat flat and...more

Oddly enough I was on the fence about giving this 3 or 4 stars. I didn't love Noelle and David spent far too much time thinking about why he couldnt have sex with her. But, the story kept me interested. I was invested almost from the first page and didn't want to put it down. I sat down this afternoon and didn't move until I was done. So I'd say it earned it's 4 stars.

This was my first by this author. I've not read any of her husband's work either (gasp!), but I plan to. I'll definitely look int...more

Cryptologist Noelle Blanche has no idea that an assignment from the U.S. Army she turned down will be the start of a series of events she never thought would happen in her quiet, uneventful life. When it turns out that a terrorist organization called "The Swarm" has possession of the same cipher text leading to hidden weapons from the Cold War, the threat on her life becomes imminent and former special agent David Wolfe is brought back into Delta Force to guard Noelle. David has a past with The...more

Overall, a pretty great Romatnic Suspense novel... It took me a while to warm up to the heroine, but by the end, she turned into a favorite.... She doesn't simper! and she doesn't just take what the Hero offers, because he's just so hot, and gorgeous, and strong, and etc that she just can't help herself. She wants it all or nothing, which is just so damn refreshing, it's hard not to love her!

The hero was pretty asesome as well, though he proved to be a bit more frustrating then the heroine. He w...more

I really enjoyed this book. There was good action sequences and the story was believable. Throughout the novel, you could feel the guilt David was carrying and how it was hard for him to communicate due to his self-imposed isolation. Noelle touched me. I liked the fact that although she is a bookworm, brainiac she was no wilting flower. She was able to think and use the skill she had in those difficult situations. The blossoming of their feelings happened in a natural believable way. I would rec...more

David is a former Black Ops guy who is hiding from the world and ghosts. Noelle is a brilliant math/cryptosomething that only a few people in the world can even understand. The government has been after Noelle to work on a program, but due to her non-violence view on life she turns them down. Unfortunately for Noelle there are terrorist that know about her abilities too and are out to get her. The government knows they are after her and called back the guy who beat them before, David. Great suspense and amazing characters. Noelle won't be pressured into working for the government, even when strangers break into her home to kidnap her. David steps in to save her from the same people who tortured and killed his wife years before.

It's almost impossible to put down once you get started with "No Regrets". I can't wait to start the follow-up, "No Control". Good for fans of Suzanne Brockmann or other romantic suspense novelists.

Not bad. She's from Independence, if I remember correctly and her book is set locally to west Missouri, so I was interested in reading it. The setting doesn't really play a big role in the plot. It's got some pretty gruesome parts, and some pretty steamy scenes, but overall, I was interested in the writing enough that I read the next 2 books in the trilogy. I need to try some of her other books at some point.

Im nearly half way through this book and I am absolutely loving it!!!!

Okay that was excellent, fast paced full of interesting plot and intersting characters.

UMMM Army men hello hottness, David is a strong alpha hero type but still has the insecurities and weight of the world on his shoulders feel about him. Noelle is the smart and pretty over achiever that believes everyones life is just as important.

I really liked the way Shannon K Butcher handled the telling of David's former wife's story with...more

I'm giving this book a hard 2 stars. There wasn't anything that hooked me good- everything was just kinda 'eh'. There seemed to be some good ideas or moments that tried to break free, but in the end I think it was just mediocre.

I really wanted to like this book, but was hoping for more. Not sure if I'm going to read the other 2 in this series or if I'm even going to keep this in my personal library. Most likely no to both.

A good suspense story of a brilliant cryptologist and the retired special forces soldier assigned to protect her from a terrorist group that he's had previous dealings with--they tortured and killed his wife. Very entertaining, fast moving and some truly amusing sections. There are some graphic adult scenes but overall I found this to be a very good book.

This is a solid 3.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed the development of Noelle's and David's relationship, and the action plot was well thought out and well executed. David is a classic wounded alpha male hero (which--full disclosure--I love) and Noelle is a smart, feisty-yet-vulnerable heroine. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

A lot of authors knew they wanted to write books from the time they were little. Their heads were full of fanciful stories that they yearned to commit to paper with a passion that only grew as they did. They spent hours reading fiction, voraciously absorbing every kind of story they could get their hands on.

Shannon was not one of them.

When she was little, she wanted to be a daddy. When she learned...more
