This is a very interesting book as far as dealing with your dog goes. I was most impressed by the techniques discussed, until I got near the end, where he gives additional tips. Millan seems to have forgotten that not all dogs that are bought are adult/from rescue centres. This means his little idea about taking the dog for an hour long walk before introducing it to your home falls completely flat if you have a puppy. No pup will last for a walk that long! (in fact, you would probably do more ha...more

I need to start with a bit of a disclaimer about this one. I read this book as a sort of "know thine enemies" thing. I have seen enough of Cesar's show and read enough about his techniques to know I don't agree with him and I find his ideas about dogs sometimes old and out of date, sometimes simply wrong, and sometimes dangerously wrong. But I opted to read the book to give myself a more complete picture of his techniques and so that I'm more informed when it comes to refuting those...more

Cesar's way is not about dog training. It's about a way of living. I can see how it might not be for everyone, but it's certainly for me. He has taught me that living with and domesticating other species should involve honoring who those beings are. Having a dog isn't just about fulfilling our needs; we must fufill theirs as well.
I know he rubs some people the wrong way. I think that's because we grow up believing that dogs are all love and cuteness, in the face of the fact tha...more

I decided to read this because we have just become owners of a fabulous 2-year-old Belgian shepherd dog. Dude is close to perfect, but we do need to work on a couple of things - jumping on us when we come home and pulling on the leash when we walk him.
Cesar gave me a lot to think about. I've already tried his technique with the jumping and it seems to work, as Dude is very intelligent. The walking will be harder because I'm such a pushover.

I picked up this book after reading a long string of other dog training books. I had great hopes that this book would help solve all my dog woes. The book begins with a description of a morning in the life of a dog at Cesar’s Dog Psychology Center. This powerful opening scene shows Cesar’s talent at it’s greatest: one man harmoniously leading 35 dogs on a mountain trail. Unfortunately the rest of the book falls somewhat short of this morning hike. The book follows Cesar’s childhood and h...more

I started watching Cesar's show, The Dog Whisperer, last year. It was just before I adopted two small dogs (a chihuahua and a chihuahua/min pin mix), so I was really interested in the topic of controlling dogs' behavior.
I enjoyed the show, and after watching a few, the basic principles of Cesar's philosophy are apparent. Many of his techniques have been useful with my dogs, although some of the advice (like walking your dogs an hour or more a day) is not practical for people who wo...more

Excellent book for just about any dog owner. This man's life is about understanding and working with dogs. His insights and his constant return to the fundamental nature of dogs has given new life to our life with our new dog. Without his assistance, I am not certain our story would have become positive again..... it was spiraling pretty quickly out of control and toward 'dog goes back to shelter'..... Without elaborating, suffice to say, this man knows his dogs, your dog, my dog ..... and all t...more

I love Cesar Millan. He isn't perfect (his section about a woman killed by neighbor's dogs is missing some key information). However, he does have a tremendous understanding of dogs (and following his techniques rather than instinct saved my fiance from being seriously mauled by a pit bull). I strongly recommend this book for anyone that interacts with dogs. Period.

The training tactics Cesar Millan recommends are inhumane, outdated and abusive. Most of the theoretical explanations that Millan gives regarding causes of dogs' behavior problems are wrong. His methods are dangerous to both dogs and their owners, check out "Dog Training for Dummies" or "Don't Shoot the Dog" or "Parenting Your Dog" instead!

Self-congratulatory, posturing "novel" about all the dogs he has worked with. Very little actual advice, and most of it is borderline abusive.
Try Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog," or Jean Donaldson's "The Culture Clash," or even Bashkim Dibra's "Dog Training" instead.

If you own a dog or are thinking about owning a dog or ever owned a dog, you MUST read this book. It will change how you related to dogs forever! It has helped me relate to my new dog and made him a happier member of our pack. READ THIS BOOK!!

Cesar's methods are too punitive for my taste. I do believe in some of his theories of pack behavior, but I don't like how he excercises his dominance. Plus, I didn't learn anything new about dog behavior in this book.

I'm learning how to understand our puppy. Cesar doesn't exactly tell us what to do (how do you teach the puppy how to sit, for instance?) He does go into detail of dog psychology.A happy dog is one who gets a lot of exercise (obviously, he lives in California and isn't facing a New England winter right now...) knows who's in charge (that would be me...) and can tell a lot about other dogs (and pack members) by sniffing them. Common sense stuff. I like the way he reminds the readers that dogs are...more

Comprehensive look at dog psychology as well as a very enjoyable memoir of Cesar's early years. I really liked hearing the stories of his clients, including the famous ones.

LOVE Cesar and his show. I laugh at the fact this guy has become a millionaire by teaching calm attitude, exercise, and discouraging bad behavior before giving affection. Being a gal with 2 rescues and having lots of friends with rescues, Cesar taught me to understand dog thinking. He's taught me about their behavior, and what to look for in certain situations.

I love dogs. I heard about this new-to-me method of dog ownership, and I was intrigued. It was not what I've always heard about dog behavior. After reading this book, I understood dogs better. It confirmed a few things I already believed. But I learned why I did not well when I owned several "problem dogs." I wish this book had been written 35 (or more!) years ago. I would have been a much better dog owner if I'd known then what I know now. I have no dogs at this time, but I s...more

My little dog with the Napoleon complex has become a bit of a bastard lately, so maybe this book that I got for free several years ago and never cracked will have something to teach me?
(Tenuously related note: For those who have been following the gendered pronoun discussion, Cesar [and/or his ghostwriter:] have done an interesting thing here – alternating pronoun genders by chapter. So in odd chapters the dog is 'him' and the person is 'her', and vice versa in even chapters. This wa...more

I learned that I did a lot right in working with my dog until she died in March 2006. Here are some things that I would do differently if I ever get a dog again.
1. I would wait for her to calm down before I put a leash on her to go for a walk.
2. I would not let her be the first one out the door when we go for a walk.
3. I would not let her walk ahead of me on a walk (at least at first).
4. She was very scared to go to the vet. I would take her on a walk before we go t...more

A spring/summer read I picked up after the advent of a "wee-doggie" in our lives: Callista, a "Great Wolfenese Hound" LOL...half Great Pyrenees - half Irish Wolfhound.
I saw Cesar's follow-up book, "Be the Packleader" and wanted to read the set in order, so I grabbed Cesar’s way along with a few other “dog books”. I'd heard about Cesar but had never seen his show nor read any articles about him—just talk here and there about the "dog whispere...more
