Jester, by Jonathan Black, had me hooked in the opening chapter with a clown peeking through the window of a Chinese barbecue restaurant at a family who were not all they appeared to me. But then neither is Jester. The reader is unsure what happens to him until he reappears as a homeless drunk 10 years later during a murder investigation. Not as a suspect, but as a witness.
