Women
I was about 8 when I discovered an old copy of little women that belonged to my mother as a child. As the only granddaughter to enjoy reading, I got to keep it and after reading it desperately tried for the next 10 years to read everything I could by Alcott. Wonderful strong female characters for young girls. Religious/moral undertones.

I love these books. There is so much in them. The hard choices that the family must make, their strong commitment to each other, the various paths taken by each of the girls - this series has real depth and describes the many ways that a woman is able to find fulfillment in life. I read it as a parable of true feminism.

It is hard work to keep another person in one's life progressing towards the positive. No character in the book just criticizes others and judges them poorly. They try to uplift others in one way or another.

I love this book because I identify with Jo. I too rather crave violence. But she has a mother that teaches while showing her a better way.

Little Men and Jo's Boys both pick where that Little Women left, I love them as dearly as I do Little Women.

Loved "Little Women" - I wanted to be Jo. Didn't like "Little Men" too much. thought "Jo's Boys" was OK.

I didn't love these quite as much as Anne of Green Gables, but still timeless girlie classic.

Louisa May Alcott: still making it okay for girls to not be pretty in '08.
