Makes Hell Look Like a Happy Place

There is some small injustice in describing Ken Bruen's "The Dramatist" as simply "noir". While all of Bruen's writing is bleak - in-your-face crime fiction with no regard for inane political correctness or modern niceties, "The Dramatist" reads like a chainsaw to the gut - an emotional tour de force that will leave fragments of Bruen's broken prose haunting your subconscious weeks after you've turned the last page. Yeah, this ...more

Oh my. After reading this installment of the Jack Taylor series, I am hard pressed to figure out how much worse things can get for Jack. I've long said that making Jack Taylor's acquaintance through reading is like watching a train about to wreck on its tracks...you know that something terrible is about to happen, but the reality of how bad it's going to be keeps you watching. But frankly, I wasn't prepared for this one.

As the novel opens, Jack's drug dealer (the very well-dressed, erudi...more

A Chilling pulp noir, Bruen's mystery returns us to the damned life of ex Guard Jack Taylor. A Galway book worm thrown off Ireland's statewide Gardai for his alcoholism, Taylor makes multiple attempts to stay sober and avoid the detection racket, but friends, lovers, and even his old drug dealer keep reeling him into rather dodgy situations because their faith in his detecting skills have too often been rewarded with success.

His nominal successes, though, come at great cost to his physical a...more

THE DRAMATIST (Unlicensed investigator-Ireland-Cont) – Ex
Bruen, Ken – 4th in series
Brandon, 2004 – Trade paperback
Jack Taylor is clean and sober and fighting hard to stay that way. A drug dealer, now serving time, hires Jack to investigate the death of his sister. Under her body was a book by Synge, into which the words "The Dramatist" had been written on the title page. When a second student dies with a copy of the same book, it's clear these are not random acts.

I don't know how Ken Bruen does it. The spareness and pure imagery of the Jack Taylor series manage to break my heart with every entry. This one was particularly tough but I came away still loving Jack and wishing him the best. I was left wanting the next book to come out quickly so I could find out how Jack was doing... I hope he's okay....

Ken Bruen is one of my favorite authors. His clipped language is strange at first, but soon becomes a total pleasure. His Jack Taylor series is not so much about the mystery, but a character study of the flawed man. He can be so despicable, but you can't help but love him.

The crimes/ deaths in Bruen's books are almost always secondary to the plot. The day to day struggles thatex cop Jack Taylor has face. Every Bruen book has tons of good books mentioned in them. I always find a new author to read after every Bruen book.

4th book in Bruen's Jack Taylor series. If you value plot above all else, the Taylor books aren't going to do it for you. If you value well-drawn characters and a protagonist who's colossally messed up but utterly fascinating, welcome to your new obsession.

This book started with a lot of promise, including an introduction to a new genre for me: Irish noir. But none of the plot lines ever really gelled and were pretty weak. It did spark enough interest in me to try another book by this writer in the future.

If you haven't read Ken Bruen, you have a treat in store. Great noir writer from Ireland. His Jack Taylor character is wonderful, a depressed alcoholic ex-cop to whom the downtrodden come to find lost loved ones. Great antihero.

Great book but not one to read if you are needing a lift or want to feel better about life. A wee bit dark. Don't give it to your manic-depressive friends if you ever want to see them again.
