الكتاب إدانة لكل من أساؤوا استخدام الدين

لغة الكتاب أقرب للتقريرية لأنه إلتزم بروي شهادة كأن شخصا ما أمامك وتحكي له حكاية فتقول حدث كذا وكذا لذلك فالفيلم يغني تماما عن قراءة الكتاب فإمكاننا أن نرى شهادة مصورة وشخصيات تؤدي بطريقة جيدة جدا
لفت نظري أداء الممثلة والتي قامت بدور زهرة بصوتها المبحوح وأدائها المذهل كإمرأة شرسة تقف في وجه الرجال وتحاول دفع الظلم عن ثريا
أما مشهد الرجم فقد كان عظيما بكل قساونه ووحشيته وهمجيته

ماحدث لثريا حقا هو الشر الكامن في خبايا الإنسان

ربما على الان محاولة تفسير زيادة دقات قلبى طول مشاهدتى للفيلم و مضاعفة تلك الزيادة عند اطلاعى على العمل الادبى...ربما يجب ان افسر لم سيطر على شعور الخوف قبل اى شئ؟ لم ليس الغضب او الحزن؟ او حتى الكراهية؟

الخوف من تلك اللحظات التى يتحول فيها ذلك المخلوق الذى اتفق ان يسمى انسان الى شئ اخر لم يجسد فى كلمة بعد....ربما الخوف من ذاك الموقف الذى تجد فيه نفسك مدفوع بكل اريحية الى قدرك بتواطئ صامت من الجميع...هل كان يمكن لنساء تلك القرية الصامتات ان ينقذن ثريا م؟ هل...more

من قبل أن أقرأ هذه الرواية
أشعر بهذا الألم
لست بالغبية لأحد يقول لي "لا تعممي " أنا أدرك ذلك ..
يؤلمني ما تحت ستار هذه الفئة ..
يؤلمني منذو اقترابي للذين يدعون للدين بسطحية واقترابي لعالمهم وحرصهم على الدين السلوكي أكثر من المعرفي
وأنا احمد الله أني لست منهم ..
يؤلمني حقا أني اقف عاجزة ومكتوفة اليدين

ثريا و رجمها الهمجي خلق عدة أسئلة بلا أجوبة ، أشار إلى التعسفية الذكورية و اختفائها تحت لواء الدين و التطرف ، خاض عمق المهزلة السياسية و ما يتبعها من تدهور أخلاقي في جميع الأركان بدءً بالأسرة غير انتهاءٍ بالهيئة الحاكمة ، لكن .. السؤال الحقيقي هل قصة ثريَا أثارت ما أثارت من وعي أم أنها مجرد زوبعة في فنجان ؟؟

انتابتنى حالة من الغثيان عند قراءتى لما فعلوه اهل القرية بعد رجم ثريا فلم يرحموها بعد مماتها وقرروا عدم دفنها لتأكل جثتها الكلاب دون ان يتبقى شئ منها بحجة انها غير طاهرة ولا يمكن دفنها ف مقابر القرية مع المسلمين الاطهار !
كرهت غوربان على وابراهيم عمدة القرية والشيخ المزيف حسن ووالد ثريا وكل افراد القرية .. حتى زهرة كرهتها لسكوتها وإيثارها الصمت عن الكلام بحجة انه لا داع له ولا منفعة منه !
قررت مشاهدة الفيلم الذى يحمل نفس العنوان " رجم ثريا " بعد قراءتى له لدغدغة البقية الباقية من مشاعرى !

ما كل هذا ؟ أقسم لك أنّ نبض قلبي متسارع من شدّة الخوف ، الرعب ، القهر .. من شدّة المتأسلمين .
كيف يحدث كلّ هذا لمخلوق اتفقنا سلفا انّه انسان ؟ أجد أن قردة تلك الفرقة أوفر حظا و سعادة من المرأة الايرانية .. من ثريا .

أجّلتُ مشاهدة الفيلم لكي لا أكون تحت وقع صدمتي الكلمات و الصور .

على الطاير : انّها عقوبة الثورات التي يتحدّث قادتها باسم الله و بظله ، أ فلا تعتبرون ؟

هنا نساء ايرانيات قبل الثورة الخمينية !!

A girl has to get approval from her guardian for every class she chooses ..Though they sound very strange to me, I cannot really comment on it as I don't know a thing about their culture and tradition..Every community has a culture and tradition that seem to work for them...
That being said The stoning of Soraya..This particularly made me to read more on stoning to death in Iran,
Accordin to which the convicted usually for infidelity is wrapped head to toe in white and buried onto their waist, stoning is a large event where people gather up and there by the stoning begins, stones are chosen in way to cause maximum pain but not instant death.
In this book Shahebjam iterating the life of Soraya, thirty five year mother of nine, devout and a faithful wife, whose life was taken away barbarously when her husband decides to remarry, and no much details about that woman is given in the book though, he then goes to the extend of prove her unfaithful to her father and her sons also gains the confidence of the local Mullah who seems to be taking up religion for individual benefit..Though the evidence where not fulfilling yet she was condemned and the stoning took place by a mob that included some of her family members..This book was a difficult one to fathom..The bigotry of a society that carried out such treacherous guile was beyond my horizon of reasoning..How can a religious head carry out such a preposterous act was my thought reading through, well you cant help much when your own husband is trying all his might to take things against her..Through all this Soraya's aunt doesn't shy away from her responsibilities, she is the only person who tries to defend her and Shahebjam gets his story from her..
I loved the part where Shahebjam writes from Soraya's vantage, her thoughts on the atrocities bestowed upon her for no reasons..Her agony through the monstrous circumstances..Her silence in her inabilty to defend herself were all well done...Shahebjam begins the book giving his reasons and thoughts behind his step to write this book and the approach adopted to channel through..The name of the village is changed for obvious reasons and like I had mentioned before, Shahebjam was not there to witness the death, yet the author leaves no room to imagination, he takes the liberty in detailing the event which is pathetically painful to read through... He takes you through the attitude of the villagers, their reflection and the support to the event..This was again a difficult part to read through..
This book may not be the one you'll end up reading over and over again, but had you read it once you may not find the need to read it again ...(less)

من المبدع واللفت للنظر بدأ المؤلف الرواية بإستهلال رائع من الشاعر الإيراني حافظ الشيرازي يقول" لا تكن كالمنافقين الذين يحسبون ان بمقدروهم طمس خداعهم اثناء صراخهم بكلمات القرآن " وحافظ شاعر قد عرف بهجومه الحاد على رجال الدين وإصطناعهم الزهد والورع ليخفون حقيقتهم خلف قناع التقوى وكان ينصح تلاميذه دائما بالإنغماس في شهوات الحياة وعدم الإستماع لهولاء المحتالين, من اقواله " هولاء الواعظون الذين يبدون مثل هذا القدر من التجلي فوق المنبر وامام المحراب- حينما يذهبون إلى الخلوة , يفعلون امراً اخراً يستوجب الجزاء والعقاب"
ومن ثم تبدأ احداث القصة فى قرية صغيرة فى الجبال على الحدود الباكستانية الايرانية حيث قرية كوباية وهى القرية التى وقعت فيها احداث رجم ثريا منوتشهيرى السيده التى حكم عليها مجتمع ذكورى فج ظالم بكل المقاييس حي لفق لها زوجها غوربان على الرجل المتسكع الذى يعانى من نقص فى ثقته الشخصية ، وقهر الحياة فى هذه القرية من فقر الحياة بل وينجب منها اكثر من 8 اطفال فهو بكل المقاييس رجل فاسد ،ملاتشى لص ، كاذب .. وعاونه من حوله من رجال الدين والسلطة المتمثليين فى الملا حسن الذى ادعى انه صاحب فطنه المسلم ونباهه رجال الدين والمامهم بالعلم فهو ايضاً كان سجيناً لصاً وقاتل ايضاً ، واتصافه بالشهوة تجاه كل من الرجال والنساء الاطفال حيث كان يعمل مدرساً فى أحدى المدارس فى كرمان ! ومن ناحية ابراهبم العمدة وصاحب القرية الذى لاسلطة له اتقفوا والتفوا معاً ضد هذه السيدة ومعهم هاشم الرجل النذل الذى عطفت عليه ثريا بخدمة منزلة كرماً لزوجته المتوفاه فيروزه ولكن مع الاسف تحت ثأثير الخوف انساق مع هؤلاء الرجال وامعاناً لرغبتهم فى الخلاص من ثريا واتهامها بالخيانة وممارسة الفحشاء مع هاشم ..وكل هذا من أجل ان يتخلص غوربان على من مصاريف طلاق ثريا حتى يتزوج من احدى فتيات المدن الكبيرة ..وعلى النقيض تظهر فى الاحداث السيدة زهرة الناضجة خالة ثريا وتدافع وتتحدث مع هؤلاء الفاسدين بنديه ..كما اعجبت بشخصيتها السيدة الصامتة الصامدة ضد هؤلاء الفاسدين وايضاً هى التى روت هذه الاحداث للكاتب فريدون صاحب جم
من الملفت للنظر فى هذه الرواية وهو تطيبق العدالة الاسلاميه " وهو المصطلح الذى حيرنى حقاً هل هو صحيح هكذا ام هو خطأ فى ترجمة المفهوم ؟! ولكن على ايه حال هنا التوقف بعد كل هذه الاحداث التى تعرضت لها فى قراءه الرواية وهو رجعية تطيبق التعاليم الاسلامية ، وكيف يمكن ان يتخللها ثغرات لمجرد انها لم تتسق مع الحاضر بالمفهوم المعقول الذى يستطيع المجتمع هضمه ، وحتى لايأتى مثل هؤلاء التحدث بأسم الدين والحكم بالرجم اتباعا لقوانين الاسلام بالظلم والجور
الرواية تستحق بكل جدارة 5\5

Just cause he says that this is a true story, doesn't mean that this is true.
I have a question, have you never sensed that the book is a fake? I sure as hell sensed it.
while the plot is mediocre, talking about a mullah who isn't really a one and cons the people of a village to believe that he is a one. And a Hashim, name of the man that she was accused of sleeping with. And we can't forget the mayor of that very large village that the writer who is a journalist who was supposed to investigate the truth can't even say the same number twice, at first the population is 250 then they are 500.
It's just the human nature to plot against each other, the alleged plot between the husband, the mullah, the mayor and the Hashim.
How can you trust the story he tells from the tongue of an old lady which happens to be very close to the accused, allegedly her aunt, when her own father and sons were silent.
how can you believe something that he tells that the accused is required by law to prove herself innocent not the other way around and you know that it couldn't be true and if you searched a little bit on the internet you would find the law of adultery in Iran http://www.wluml.org/node/3908 that states otherwise what is written in the book.
The law states that 4 people should witness the real act and testify or the accused admit his or her act for the punishment, and if they were 3 not 4 that witnessed the act or they are accusing with no prove they would be punished and severely, those freakin' smiles and long stay overs are crap that doesn't work in the eye of the law.
the pictures drawn in the book could only be drawn by a below average writer, dumbing the kid, who throw the rock on the father, in mud after the mullah hit him hard and twice until his lips cracked and were bleeding, what a stereotype.
It seems that I didn't buy that story. If the journalist have been really there or bought a 5$ book about adultery in Islam he wouldn't have fall in into those mistakes faking his story.
I'm NOOOOOT saying I support or stand against that stonning law but you should have the whole facts before trusting some fake lier.(less)

هل فعلاً هذا ماحدث؟
وهل يوجد أناس ترضى بقبول هكذا شيء.. كيف لعلماء دين وهذا ان كانو فعلا متدينين وهم لم يكونوا بالاصل هكذا بل اتخذوا من الدين ذريعه ليحل الفساد ولتنفذ اوامراهم وليطاعوا من قبل المقابل وليصبحو اثرياء .. كيف لهم ان يحددو مصير انسان بنصف ساعه فقط يأمرون بالاعدام بالرجم؟ حتى لم يكلفوا انفسهم بموت رحيم
او على الاقل ذات صدمه وبشاعه اقل ؟
هناك عدة اشياء استفزازيه منها قولهم ( هذهِ اراده الله)
الله لم يأمرنا باتهام انسان زور وان نقتله بحجة الدين ..
الشيء الثاني هو كلما يحمدون الله او يقولون شيء تكون الكلمه الاوى لله والثانيه للأمام المبجل ( الخامنئي)

هذه القصة تمت كتابتها عام 1984 من كاتب اصلا مناهض لحكومة أيران ثم اعيد انتاجها أمريكيا كفيلم يعبر عن سياسات أمريكا تجاه ايران ثم شغل جدل واسع على هذا الذي تعرضت له ثريا بالتلقي والتسليم للكاتب في كل ما كتب ثم يقرأ القصة فيخرج بحالة من الاكتئاب ..
المهم ، هنا لدينا مشكلة كبيرة جدا في القصة وحبكتها .. أول مشكلة في شروط الحد اللازمة لإقامته = نجد إمام القرية يطلب بشاهد اخر مع زوجها حتى يثبت عليها الفاحشة (وحتى أنه ثبت لأن المرأة مرة تبسمت للرجل ومرة غفلت في مخدع المنزل الذي تعمل فيه ولم يمسسها أحد) ولو أن الكاتب اشترى كتاب ببضعة دراهم لعرف ما اللازم لإقامة الحد وأنه أمر صعب توافره من أربعة شهود ( والشهود عدول = لهم شروط ) يرون الفاحشة وهى تحدث رأي العين وإن لم يكتمل العدد كان في حقهم الجلد لافترائهم على المحصنات .. وهذا أمر يفقد القصة الحبكة الأدبية .. ثم أنهم يفترون على ثريا بشاهدين يحكون عبثا ويطالبوها أن تثبت أنها بريئة ! مع أن البينة على من ادعي . وهذا الادعاء بغير بينة لازم له الجلد بمن تفوه به وتجرأ على المحصنة .. [هههه تذكرت قول الشيخ بن جبرين _رحمه الله _ عندما سألوه عن الشيعة هل هم مرتدون ؟ فقال : هم لم يدخلوا الإسلام حتى يخرجوا منه ]
المهم، يحدث الرجم فيبالغ المؤلف فيه بشدة حتى تموت ثريا فيرفضوا حتى أن يصلوا عليها او يدفنوها أين هذا من الشرع ..كما قلت لو أنهم اشتروا كتاب لتعلموا منه ... هؤلاء القوم عندما كانوا يشكرون الله يقولون " بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم " ثم أهل القرية يصيحون بالتكبير والتحميد عند الرجم وقذف وشتم المرجومة ( عاهرة , عاهرة ) كاد المؤلف أن يستنطقهم حي على الجهاد حتى يشوهوا المجاهدين كما العادة.. لم يراعي المؤلف الفروق بين أهل السنة والشيعة فلم يبين طقوس الشيعة حتى يميزهم ليلقي الأمر على الإسلام مبين الظلم فيه ويستبشع حد الرجم .. مع أن حد الرجم موجود في الكتاب المقدس في سفر التثنية فقرة ( 13- 21) العهد القديم ...
وحتى إن كان الأمر تحرر من الاديان فإن ما حدث في الفيلم لن يبلغ نقطة في بحر مما ممارسته عنصرية الرجل الابيض حتى في علمانيتها و لن يصل لما يحدث لألاف المساجين في جوانتانامو وما " عافية صدقي عنا ببعيد " وغيرها الكثير وملايين الأطفال الذين ماتوا جوعا بحصار أو اشلاء بقصف النساء اللائي يمتن بطائرة بدون طيار تقصف بلا رحمة يحركها رجل يجلس في مكيف لو راى عيون من تقتلهم في بكستان أو افغانستان لتوقف عن قنصهم يموت من يموت .. إلخ
الخلاصة : إن هذه القصة إن كانت حقيقية فإن الظلم الذي حدث بها لا يرضاه الإسلام حتى يصور من يصور أنه من شيوخ الدين لمجرد رجل بعمامة ، إن هذا ظلم و إن حد الرجم لم يستوفي شروطه ولم تكتمل البينة النافية للشك ، وكان يجب جلد من اتهمها هذا هو الإسلام ..حتى لا تشربوا الرواية بطعم السم الحلو ..

المؤلف لعب علي الاتنين بسهولة ويسر

This book should definitely not be read unless you are in a safe place, with people you love and trust surrounding you. I think that's the only way I got through some of the truly gut-wrenching horrors that Sahembiam illustrates with the case of Soraya M. Nightmares may come otherwise.

In reading this story and imagining how Soraya must have felt it is not difficult to see why she was silent. She must have felt trapped because she had no way to defend herself. Whether or not the charges were justified or false the cards were stacked against her. I cannot imagine how she came to terms with her sentence. I cannot fathom what must have gone through her mind when she watched her father, her sons, pick up stones to throw at her.

The person I think I am most amazed at is Soraya's aunt. The only person to try to come to her aid. In thinking about that country and its treatment of women, Soraya's aunt stands out as a hero. She spoke out in Soraya's defense. She failed to stay quiet after the execution and it is from her that we hear Soraya's story. What an amazing amount of courage, love and strength that took. I would like to think I could be so strong. But in all honesty I am not certain. I do not think any of us who lived our entire lives free could say with absolute certainty that they could do what Soraya's aunt did.

The back cover of the book states, " It is a story that must be told." To that I add, it is a story that must be read. You cannot change anything in ignorance. Knowledge is power. Is it to say that by reading the book Iran will suddenly change its sentencing? No. We all know that is not realistic. But perhaps by becoming knowledgeable and passing that knowledge on we can eventually change things for the better. According to the author between 1979 to 1983 the Iranian government acknowledged that between 500 to 600 women were put to death by stoning. Today there are 15 at risk of stoning. That is a huge difference. Knowledge is power. I cannot imagine the strength of the Iranian people who have fought to change things for the better in their country. I am in awe of them as I am of those in countries around the world who fight against injustice; those who refuse to be silent in the face of death.

The Stoning of Soraya M. is a story that must be read. It is a story you will not forget.(less)

Taking advantage of the religious fervor sweeping the land, a number of these people, especially those with at least a basic knowledge of the Koran and its tenets, donned clerics' garb, gave themselves the title of mullah, and roamed the country seeing opportunities for self-enrichment or, quite simply, to conceal their past from the authorities."

In 1986, the author was waiting in a small mountain village in Iran for a contact to take him over the border into Pakistan, when he was offered tea by an elderly woman. She then proceeded to tell him that two weeks earlier, her niece Soraya had been stoned to death for being unfaithful to her husband, and that she had been innocent of the charge. The author's contact showed up and he had to leave, but he promised the woman he'd be back, and he returned some six months later to hear her story, which ended up being the substance of this book. The book recalls a beyond-horrible crime instigated by one of these above-mentioned mullahs in cahoots with Soraya's husband. This mullah (Sheik Hassan) had been in prison and was running away from the regime that put him there. He had fled to a small village of about 250 people where he was able to quickly gain the trust of the village leaders and become the go-to guy for settling disputes, and he was able to profit monetarily from his position as well. The sheik's background is important, because he represents one of those people whose position allowed him to manipulate religious beliefs for his own gain, and in this particular case, vengeance.

The basic story is this. Soraya's parents had betrothed her to Ghorban-Ali whom she had known since childhood and whom she didn't like even then. He was an abusive husband and later father, who would beat his wife regularly and then start in on his children. He spent a great deal of time turning his two older children against their mother. When he wasn't in the village, he was involved in black-market and other illegal activities until the change in regime, when he became a prison guard and realized his potential for power over others. Once he got a taste for power and life in the city (and the gains he'd made financially and materially in his position as prison guard) he no longer wanted to be a peasant from the village, but instead wanted to live the life of Riley in the city complete with a 14 year old honey that he wanted to marry. The problem was his marriage to Soraya, and how to get rid of her; ultimately with no way out of the marriage, he turned to Sheik Hassan. And this is when Soraya's life went from one of abuse to one of utter horror.

There are a couple of things worth mentioning. First, there is no doubt that this event actually happened, and there is no doubt that stoning as a punishment for adultery is a reality among some Muslim fundamentalists in some areas. You can go to any human rights organization's website and find out all that you want to know about it there and to be fair, you can go to the website of Al-jazeera (an Islamic news organization) to read about recent developments about stoning as well. It is also an abominable practice that is beyond my scope of comprehension in the realm of human cruelty.

Second, there's no doubt in my mind that as far as the story this book tells, the stoning of Soraya M. a) reflects a plan conceived by a few misogynistic individuals who deliberately used the existing Sharia laws for their own personal gain and b) was allowed to happen as a result of an abuse of power in this small village.

To get the full story, you need to read the book. It is a difficult story but an eye-opening one that you will probably not soon forget. I know I won't. I don't think I need to see it on the big screen, though.

كنت متوقعة كثيرُ من الأحداث المتلاحقة ولكني لم أجد شيئاً يُذكر سوى في الفصل الأخير.فصل الرجم.

مدخل الرواية إلى سبب إدانة ثريا بالزنا يكاد يكون ضعيفُ جدا...ترى أحداث الرواية تناقض بعضها البعض,فالقرية المتزمتة تسمح لثريا بمنتهى البساطة بالذهاب لبيت هاشم لمساعدته في أمور المنزل ثم هي نفسها القرية تتناقل الشائعات حول علاقة ثريا بهاشم!! أي سفه أدبي هذا؟! وأي حجة ضعيفة جدا تستند لها الرواية في أحداثها؟!
ثريا التي بدأت تهمل بيتها في الفصل الثالث نراها فجأة ربة منزل مثالية علمت أطفالها الهندام والنظافة في الفصل الرابع!
والدها الذي رباها ويعرف عفتها وفضيلتها نراه لا يجد صعوبة في وصفها بالعاهرة لمجرد أن الناس قد صدقوا كذب زوجها المعروف عنه السيرة السيئة!! ..نراه يقتنع بكل هدوء أنها مذنبة وعاهرة ويكون أول من يرمي بحجر رجمها."في الحتة ديه قعدت أقول يا سلااااااااااااااااااااام"
أطرف خلل في الرواية عندما تقرأ بأن عدد الأشخاص في القرية 250 شخص لتجدهم بقدرة قادر قد أصبحوا بعد ساعة من إحضار ثريا 500 شخص"عشان تحس بس بهول الفاجعة"
كون القصة حقيقية لا يعني بالضرورة أن تكون الرواية ممتعة...فهي ضعيفة لأبعد الحدود ولم أجد فيها سوى فصل الرجم الذي كان يصلح أكثر كمقال مأساوي عن حقيقة حدثت..

I first become aware of this story when the movie adaption of the book came out. I read an interview of Shohreh Aghdashloo (who is a wonderful actress and a beautiful woman), and went to see the film, even though I knew it wasn't going to be a happy picture.

It was the only time I have ever heard crying in a movie theatre.

When Amazon offered this on sale for the Kindle, I picked it up.

This is absolutely one of THE MOST moving stories I have EVER encountered.

صحيح أنه تم التأكيد والتلميح أن الفيلم لا يناقش سوى قضية معاقبة المرأة بالرجم هذا القانون الذي تم منع تطبيقه إلا ضمن المحاكم العليا ورغم استمرار ملالي شيوخ بعض القرى في فرضه
إلا أن الإشارات الخفية أن هذا هو الإسلام إنظروا إلى وحشيته لا تخفى على أحد ولو كان أغبى من في الأرض

إظهار الملا وعلي زوج ثريا بلحى طويلة ومسابح في أيديهم طوال الوقت
وإظهارهم كشخصيات تتظاهر بالتدين وهي أخبث من خلق
والعكس عندما أظهروا إبراهيم عمدة القرية وهاشم الرجل الطيب المسكين الذي تعرض لتهديد علي والملا بلا شعرة واحدة في لحاهم
هذه من الضربات المبطنة لتشويه الإسلام بلا شك

لا أنكر أن القصة مؤثرة ومؤلمة هذا الظلم الذي يمارس باسم الدين وكل تلك الأفعال الخسيسة , الدين الذي بات يستخدم كجواز سفر يفتح لهم كل الأبواب الموصدة, هذا الدين الفارسي الذي بلا شك يختلف تماما عن ديننا الإسلامي المعروف لكنه في الوقت نفسه من قبل نفس الأشخاص يمارس عليه كل تلك الأفعال الدنيئة الخسيسة هذا الدين بريء منهم براءة تامة

لا أعرف ماذا أقول أيضا فلقد انتابتني موجة غم وكآبة فظيعة بعد قراءة ومشاهدة العمل..!

I didn't read the book but I saw the movie and I feel like I needed to make it known how powerful this story is. If you're not going to read the book, at least see this movie.

I have a very hard time believing that this story is completely based in fact. There are just some details that the author could not have found out, even second-hand. The most blatant example of this would be the thoughts that run through Soraya's head as she is being put into the hole before the stoning. This started off slow.

It felt distant and too journalistic. I didn't pick up this book for a journalistic account. I didn't want information. You can get information through research on the subject. I wanted information AND emotion AND understanding. I wanted the answer to the question of : Why why why?

This true story is so sad and it is almost impossible to imagine this event occurred in 1986. The author informs the reader that officially stoning has been prohibited in territories of Islam, but it is still can be suggested by any religious authority- and has been.

This is one Iranian woman's story of suffering under the supposed justice system of Sharia law in Iran ... it is even more heartbreaking when you consider that it took place relatively recently, and still occurs today. I discovered this book by way of a tv interview of an Iranian actress that plays a role in the recent movie by the same name (as the book). She also confirmed that Sharia law still allows for the stoning of women in Iran.
This book is small ... but the author (a journalist) powe...more This is one Iranian woman's story of suffering under the supposed justice system of Sharia law in Iran ... it is even more heartbreaking when you consider that it took place relatively recently, and still occurs today. I discovered this book by way of a tv interview of an Iranian actress that plays a role in the recent movie by the same name (as the book). She also confirmed that Sharia law still allows for the stoning of women in Iran.
This book is small ... but the author (a journalist) powerfully tells the story of Soraya M.who suffers in an arranged marriage. Her husband basically involves himself in a diabolical plot to "frame" his wife to make it look like she is unfaithful to him ... and then self-righteously demands the most extreme penalty under Sharia law, stoning. He does this out of lust for another woman whom he wants to marry. Soroya's aunt is the old woman who recounts the story of her niece's stoning to the journalist author and demands the story be told to the whole world. She is the hero in the book. Because she is an old woman, she gets away with confronting the village leaders and immam with their shameful injustice. It is to no avail however,because in the end, the whole village is whipped up into a terrible frenzy of blind hatred and violence, and Soroya is murdered in cold blood.
The saddest thing that I think is apparent in this story, is that "religion" and "God" are twisted and used by these wicked men to justify something that would never be considered lawful otherwise. I had to think of the woman brought to Christ after being caught in the "very act" of adultery. The religious leaders were CERTAIN that He would have to pronounce the death sentence on her, but instead, Jesus looked into their hearts and said those powerful words,"He who is without sin, cast the first stone." They were brought face to face with their OWN sin and had to depart. Her life was restored, and He sent her on her way with these words, "Go and sin no more." The God of Islam, does not know anything about mercy ... neither do its most radical followers. We would do well to remember this when faced with the fact that radical islamists are trying to make inroads into our own culture and country.(less)

Shelves: warning-disturbing-material, absolutely-no-young-adult-books

The book is about a woman in Iran whose only crime was that she became an inconvenient wife. Rather than divorce his wife and have to return her dowry, he decides to accuse her of adultery which carries the sentence of stoning to death.

This is an extremely disturbing story that I believe needs to be told. I think everyone should read this book. In the west, we tend to forget that these things happen in the world because we do not see it.

Shelves: tragedy, religion, middle-east, non-fiction

Soraya's life started out with hardships that never let up her entire life. This book shows the danger of people living in ignorance and the tragic results that can occur when an entire society fears either an individual or a group of people. The sad part about this is knowing that thousands of other women are dealing with the same situation as Soraya that will (most likely) have the same outcome.
