Something funny is going on in the mind of Jobeus. He's been lying awake at night having visions. It's been a week since they moved him to the Hawses' foster home way out in the country, and the house is still strange, the old man in the pajamas downstairs is weird. Everything is. His old life is lost to him, childhood is ending, an

Well, this is the last time I'll plunk 15 bucks down to buy a book just because of the author's name.

(Actually, given the total lack of any information about the author in the book or online, I'm guessing it could even be a pseudonym.)

It starts out promisingly enough. Jobeus, the troubled 13-year-old at the heart of the story, is a memorable character, and the author does a good job of getting us inside his head. The first part of the novel is devoted to showing us how he struggles to adapt to h

I fell in love twice while reading I Shall Be Gone during a three-week vacation in Brazil. First, I fell in love with Jobeus the protagonist. His genuine interest in everything that was happening around him, not only in his immediate surroundings, but also around the world and in history, as well as his peculiar awareness of how it all affected him, grabbed me by the heart. Jobeus was everything one could not expect from a 13 year old boy living in a foster home. I fell in love with him for his ...more

This was one of the best debut novels I've read over the past couple of years. Ferrara's command of characterization- from the imagination of an orphaned thirteen-year-old boy to the despair of a middle-class housewife to the soul of a dead poet extraordinaiire- carried the book's 400 or so pages with grace, pathos, humor and everything else we crave in good literary fiction.
It's a rare yet coveted experience to laugh with the characters a reader develops a bond with, but Ferrara engenders it ef

Absolutely Awesome!
At first, the troubled thoughts of young Jobeus were so complex and unusual, that I considered whether this book might be above my level of understanding. However, I was soon drawn into the story and became so captivated that I did not want to stop reading. Becoming totally absorbed in the life of Jobeus, I was longing for him to find some relief from his disquieting burdens. His journey was awesome, as he continually searched for truth and acceptance, contending with his some

It was during this time that he holed up in Arequipa and wrote most of what would become his first novel I Shall Be Gone, a spell invoked from visions of youth in the farther reaches of the Great North Woods. The bulk of his travel writings from South America remain unpublished under t ...more
