Choose Your Own Adventure!

You are Imhotep, ka-priest of Ancient Egypt, ruler over a family of nitwits and schemers and busybodies, with drama enough to drive you insane. Poor fellow, all you want is just a little peace... the kind of peace that is found in the arms of a gorgeous concubine. Who can blame you? The only sympathetic person in your life is your daughter, a lovely and tragic young widow. But sadly, the concubine turns out to be as big a drama queen as everyone else in your life and ve...more

Agatha Christie uses quote to echo the precepts of Ptha-hotep, from maybe the oldest known manuscripts.

"Men are made fools by the gleaming limbs of women, and lo, in a minute they are become discolored carnelians. A trifle, a little, the likeness of a dream, and death comes as the end"
(Hard to find in p88 Life magazine 1 Oct 1956, yet Christie published book first in 1944 - inside knowledge?) http://books.google.ca/books?id=sEEEA...

This audiobook was the pick for a drive up to Rhode Island and back. Not going to lie, I selected this book entirely because it's narrated by the actress who played Morgause on BBC's Merlin. As a result, all the Ancient Egyptians sound like they're from various strata of the British Isles (I think I heard a cockney accent, an Irish accent, along with your stereotypical posh upper cruster, among others). It's a bit funny at first, but you get used to it.

This was my first Agatha Christie and it wa...more

One of the two Agatha Christie novels I own right now (I hope to one day own all of the Poirot adventures) and all I have to say are three words:
I LOVED IT!!!!!!!
Let me just say that I am a HUGE fan of Christie's books, her mysteries are AMAZING and keep me guessing until the very end. I think there is only ONE book out of the fifty or so that I read where I actually managed to guess who the killer was. Usually I end up picking five suspects and hoping that one of them is the killer. They never...more

I was quite hesitated when I first read this book. Perhaps the setting of the book's plot was not enough to catch my interest. Then, as I read further, I seemed to be reading from a history book with precise historical view; rather than actually reading a crime book by Agatha Christie.

She made it precised with the timelines, the characters' functions in society, the clear explanation of hierarchy and the cultural surrounding of Egypt at that period of time. This book was not her best book, or at...more

Definitely a departure for Dame Agatha in that the story is set in Ancient Egypt. I know I had read this book several times already but I wasn't sure if I could remember who "done" it (although early on, I started to get suspicious and then toward the end, remembered) so I went ahead and read it for a book group. I have mixed feelings about this particular book of Christie's many masterful mysteries. I'm pleased she took a try at historical mystery and almost wish she had done more. That being s...more

I wasn't sure what to expect with this novel, as I'd gotten used to the post-war setting that most of Christie's novels are based in, so a historical murder mystery was a break from normal. To my great surprise, I ended up really loving this novel. I don't know whether it's because I used to study Classics, but the ancient Egyptian setting really added to the story for me and interesting to see how a murder mystery could be successfully worked into a family group where ritual is incredibly impor...more

It is not generally known that Agatha Christie was married to an archeologist. She actually spent time in Egypt at various archeological digs. (She remarked that it was a good thing to marry an archeologist, since his appreciation could only increase as she got older). She got the idea for this book after reading the Hekanakhte letters, a collection of letters found at Thebes (and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art) written by a traveling man to his quarrelsome family. Ms. Christie thought the le...more

I'll acknowledge that Christie might have written more impressive novels, ones that might stand out more in the mystery genre and best act as an introduction to her work. But of all the Christie novels, and I've read a few dozen, including the most famous, this one is my personal favorite, and probably for the reason it's unique among her novels.

All her other mystery novels were set in the present day of when they were published--this one is set in Ancient Egypt, as the Author's Note tells us, "...more

While not my favorite work by Christie, this is easily a close second. "Death Comes As The End" is set in Ancient Egypt (the only one of Christie's books to have a historical setting) and follows the trials of one family as one by one its members are picked off; some believe it's divine retribution while others blame a much more mortal element. Ancient Egypt is a perfect setting for Christie to use as, not only was she well versed in the subject (one of her husbands was an archaeologist who work...more

I debated two or three stars--I enjoyed this one the least of all Agatha's novels, and I don't feel bad saying so because she wasn't happy with it either! It was her only foray into historical fiction, and since much of what I love about reading her novels in order is 60 years of her commentary on English life as it unfolded, the ancient Egyptian setting holds no charm for me. I couldn't even get any insight into a WWII-era view of ancient Egypt, since few of Dame Agatha's contemporaries would h...more

Ahh, I love Agatha Christie!

And Then There were None'.

The book takes place in Egypt, 2000 BC, but as Agatha Christie noted, it could be any time and place, since people didn't change much. It's easy to replace ka-priest with wealthy lord or rich businessman and his concubine with young wife. It's easy to recognise a timid housewife, an egoistic youngth, a henpecked husband and so on. At the same time Agatha Christie creates wonderful atmosphere of Anciet Egypt, where death is a source of wealth, where version of the ghost committing murders is take...more

Agatha Christie's Death Comes as the End is a good old-fashioned whodunnit with many layers of characterization and psychological intrigue.

Unlike Christie's many other mysteries, such as her beloved Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple series, this one takes place in ancient Egypt. Although the story is technically about the murder of a concubine, it's actually more about the family drama among and the psychological landscape of the central family's members. A ka-priest (priest whose job it is to ten...more

Very odd. It's good when an author tries to stretch, you know, but it was still the same story, and I didn't like that inching-toward-monotheism business one bit; it seemed terribly disrespectful. Still, I guess all her stories are the same story, so to criticize this one in particular isn't fair; it was how the tone felt like a mixture of genuine narrative and this unpleasant "writing about savages" superiority. If she was taking it seriously, then it's too bad she was such a prejudiced old thi...more

Les chos...more

This book gave me such a different world context.
It's placed in the Egyptian world, in the context of an Egyptian family.

I think Agatha Christie wrote it well and her description as well as historical background really impressed me. However, the thing I lacked out of the 5 senses was the sense of smell. Nothing was mentioned on that aspect.

Nonetheless, in this story, I did not try to guess who the killer was and i really enjoyed the book thoroughly.

I really like the character of Renisenb and...more

My first Agatha Christie! It... sort of lived up to the hype.

First of all, I enjoyed the setting. I'm not sure if it was 100% accurate, but it was certainly not inaccurate to my layman's eye, and it was a nice little read. I was sort of annoyed that our ostensible heroine didn't actually get to do much except be bait, but the mystery was well-constructed and I liked that Renisanb had some sympathy for Nofret despite disliking her intensely. I never did see what Renisanb saw in Kameni, though; I...more

Before I can talk about this book I have to make a confession … I had never read an Agatha Christie book before. The shame of it! Her books have always been on my ‘to read’ list but I’ve never gotten round to actually reading one. So you can imagine my excitement when I got to proofread the audiobook.

The story is set in Egypt, 2000BC; an era where death itself is celebrated, not to mention very profitable. As a Ka-priest’s daughter, Renisenb’s life is defined by death. She moves back into the fa...more

On the surface, this Agatha Christie mystery is an oddity---far removed from a twentieth drawing room of a country English manor and set in the hot sands of ancient Egypt. Yet, knowing that Agatha Christie, through her archaeologist husband, was exposed and influenced by the history of Egypt and the Middle East, it shouldn't surprise anyone that at least one of her stories should take place thousands of years in the past. The plot, however---the new young wife of a wealthy man at odds with his a...more

This was my very first Agatha Christie novel. My mother gave me this book when I was twelve when I was in the throes of my 'Egypt Love' phase. She knew I'd love this book and I did. I've read this quite a number of times(I've actually lost count) and I still love it. I still love most things Egypt and I go back to this book whenever I want a pick me up.

The book: My favorite character is Esa. Esa was such a cracker. A lot of people thought this was a very guessable whodunit but when I first read...more

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.

Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K., as the youngest of three. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880...more
