Die d...more

Jul 01, 2007 Carl rated it 5 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: Fans of thoughtful fantasy and 800 page books
Translated from German, this book just looked too tempting with its 800 pages. Took me a while to get around to reading it, but what a ride once you get on! For those more interested in action-adventure type fiction, this might not be for you-- it has the feel of a quest book, but the quest is largely internal and relational, and the plot is biographical, following the life, travels and adventures of Listener. It's been over 5 or 6 years and I still haven't worked up the energy to get through it...more

This is a book that stays with you long after the breathless shiver you get brought on by those final words of a truly magical story, 'The End'.

If your after a page by page, on the 'edge-of-your-seat' ride publishes like to throw at us fantasy reading public then you may be disappointed. Instead what you get it a journey of discovery and endless search with the book's philosophical approach difficult to avoid. Not that you'd want to as it's not preachy or in your face message but more about lett...more

I found this book on (read: stole this book from) my mother's bookshelf when I was fifteen or so, and I'm utterly glad I did. Despite its admittedly rather excessive length, Stein und Flöte is one of the books I can read and reread and fall in love with over and over again.

Read this book as a metaphor with social commentary, a philosophical text or a fable with a smashingly witty moral at the end, and you're bound to be disappointed.
Read it as the beautiful fairy tale it is, with its unforgettab

Nope.

I know it's a classic but I think I'd have to be reading it in German or would need to actually BE German to get it. Key words: Convoluted, the end is too far from the beginning.

People love it.

I didn't. I read it on holiday on Isle of Capri and if it hadn't been for the bread, the gelato and the views it might have completely spoiled my stay.

Barlo's endless meetings with people and their stories actually had me dreading the next part of his journey lest I'd have to read yet another long d...more

Cruising through some reviews of this book I noticed that it has divided its readers. Some say that it is one of the best under rated fantasies they have ever read and up their with stories like Watership Down. Others say that perhaps something was lost in the translation from German to English and that it was too light and shallow for a fantasy book.

I actually liked it. I appreciated the different writing style and the stories within stories. I am a big believer in the journey being more import...more

It's a tribute to how well written this book is, that I was able to read it when I was severely ill, and it caused me to forget my symptoms and transported me into the story.

There is a wealth of detail, and smaller stories within the larger tale, which each and every one, draw the reader in, and compel, and fascinate.

The story is largely a spiritual one, and deals with the issues of violence, and anger, and how to address them as a spiritual seeker. However it is the story itself which dominat...more

It's been awhie since I've read this book. But it left me with such wonderment at the journey Listener embarked on. Not only was it written as a quest, but at the onset, Bemman opens you up to a fairy tale setting. All characters immediately latch onto you and a kinship is developed with them, regardless of their positioning of the story. I really would love to read this one again!

This was one of my favourite books as a teenager. 25 years later, I read it for a third time. The experience was disillusioning. While I loved Lauscher as a teenager, I couldn't identify with the whole cast any more. The development of the story is one-dimensional and it's too implausible how it unfolds. I had better kept my memories instead of reading it again.

Though wouldn't say it's my favorite, I keep coming back to it. Unsure it is that quiet grace of Listener compels me or the fact this book is simply epically long and so insured a place of escape for an extended time, but I've read again and again until I abruptly decided it should go to the library sale. I've missed it since.

Was good, but very dense. Shouldn't try to read when in the middle of another book, slogs it further. It's almost 3 in thick, with small print, but confusing enough that you reread the same line once or twice before you figure out what you are doing. I got so frustrated, I quit with at least an 8th of the book to go.

hm...
the first pages are interesting, they make a yen for more, but about the middle of the book I just had to stop.
It's not really boring, but lenghty.
But in fact, it's very poetic, and when I finally finished it (it needed a bit more patience than I usually am able to have... ;-) I really enjoyed it...

The Stone and the Flute

I have already read some of the best literature masterworks of the world, but have to admit that this book was the greatest thing I ever read. I would rate it as the story I always wished to write, and Hans Bemmann did it in the best imaginable way.

This is a novel about life and about the world, about humans and about the nature. What I love is that there is no god and no religion in this book.

The world of this book is as colorful as the world around us, with people whom w...more

I remember reading this book in high school and for the longest time could not remember the title. It had a strong impact on me and I rank it as one of my favorite books of all time. It is long though. In retrospect it reminds me of Alberto echo's work.

one of my alltime favorite books, read it every couple of weeks, should be a major movie along the lines of Lord of the Rings
beautiful characters and landscapes, allegoric like the Greek Mythology, fun and entertaining too

Sounded promising but got to the end and felt it didn't really go anywhere. I was waiting for some major revelation from the main character that never really came. Overall a bit disappointing.

Read it a long time ago and loved it. The hero is an anti hero and I did not expect the ending. It was like nothing I had read before or since.
Tony Mast
Without a doubt, my favorite book.

I love storytelling that includes stories within stories and Bemmann is a master at this.

GREAT story.

Very long, choppy, and I dislike the main character. Still, I can see that there would be some who would love this. Just not me.
Allen Garvin
Long, long, overlong--nearly 900 pages. It has its charms, and the story-telling is excellent at time, but it goes about about 600 pages too long, and little happens.
Howlynn Martin
I love this book, the symbols are true magic, the story nothing but a sweet sigh of contentment!

This book is AMAZING. It flies under so much radar and I have no idea why. I was obsessed with the book in high school. I was one of only 2 people that checked it out from our school library, probably due to the immense heft of it. It's a decent read, over 800 pages. But those will fly by like only great fantasy can do for you. I was engrossed in the lands that Listener dwelled in, his arrogance and naivety giving way to wisdom and sorrow. I can't say enough good things about this book, if you l...more

I made it through a pretty good chunk of this book but I haven't finished it yet. It's very poetic, it reads like a myth. At any point, you wouldn't be shocked if a cat started talking, or the beggar that's been helped turned out to be a fairy. I found it hard to read, but that wasn't a surprise. I normally find books with a lot of poetical language difficult. I'll retry it in five years or so, see if it's easier then. That's what I did with The Riddlemaster of Hed by Patricia McKillip.
