“The Silent Duchess” provides instant gratification opening the illustrated world of Marianna Ucria, who is both deaf and mute. This plot offers an in-depth novel without relying on dialogue. Does it work? Yes. Maraini brings the imagery surrounding Marianna and her thoughts vividly to life while also opening the door to insightful thinking from the reader. Marianna’s feelings and personal growth are both naive and excelled at the same time; making her a multi-dimensional character and creating a strong, beautiful, and flowing story.

Speaking of ‘flow’, “The Silent Duchess” doesn’t follow the general straight-line chronology of other novels. Although the events are in proper succession, each jumps from various points in Marianna’s life, meaning: she may be 6 years old, then 13, etc. This can cause some issues for those readers who want to follow one steady path, however; it is easy to adjust to. Plus, Maraini’s extraordinary storytelling still fuses the events together smoothly, as Marianna’s character ages without chunkiness and demonstrates complexity.

Maraini beautifully unites each passage with underlying themes (love, self-discovery, death, feminism) and yet none of these are predictable and are instead unique and penetrating. Furthermore, Marianna experiences events which are clearly linked and not entirely explained which entices the reader to be patient and continue to turn the pages. “The Silent Duchess” isn’t filled with an overabundance of drama but it doesn’t fail to capture the reader.

“The Silent Duchess” is written almost like a diary using insight into Marianna’s head versus words. Every other sense is illuminated which bleeds though as one reads. The reader truly gets to know Marianna on several levels. More of a stream of consciousness novel but with more organization, Maraini presents plot and subplot points entertainingly.

The pace does begin to slow slightly approximately ¾ of the way through. At this point, Maraini hasn’t hastened Marianna’s growth and simply continues to explain life events. However, Maraini then completely “shocks” at just this crucial point, presenting a highly climactic moment/discovery which rejuvenates the story (perhaps this was Maranini’s intention with the pace slow-down). Maraini doesn’t truly explore this event but this is actually intriguing because it helps tie together the novel themes of female oppression and forced silence. It also illuminates the beauty of silence being a loud expression. Silence is dramatic enough and Maranini knows the secret method of “less is more”.

“The Silent Duchess” has been translated into 20 languages and has been made into both a play and a film (and deservingly so). It is deep, image and emotion laden, moving, and thought-provoking. It is (despite some minor flaws) a stunning work. Sometimes, the good ole’ US of A needs to “get on the ball” in receiving amazing, literary work.

Set in early 18th-century Sicily, the setting and historical details of this story are as fascinating as the unusual life of Marianna is engrossing. She is a young, deaf noblewoman from Palermo married off to her uncle at the age of 13 and while the book reads as an interesting straight-forward story, at the same time Dacia Maraini subtly makes clear that Mariana's silence is a metaphor for Sicily's historic suppression of women.

Questo romanzo mi è indigesto come se ogni riga fosse 60 pagine della guida telefonica.
La trama era perfetta, solo che mi aspettavo chissà cosa. Marianna è a dir poco insopportabile. Quelle frasi in siciliano sono utili solo a chi il siciliano lo sa (e non sono io, e nemmeno ho voglia di sforzarmi è troppo diverso dal mio dialetto).
Le parti storiche sarebbero interessanti se non venissero descritte con la leggerezza di mattoni.

There is a strong class system with nobles living well, but precariously. They control the lives of those below their rank and on a whim they can pluck someone from miserable poverty and "elevate" them to servitude.

Noble women, who are well dressed and well fed, are similarly moved around, but their fate is determined more by strategy than by whim. Noble women, who are well dressed and well fed, are similarly moved around, but their fate is determined more by strategy than by whim. The sons are not always pleased with the match made by their parents, but beauty can help the ease a loveless marriage... in the beginning. In this culture, everyone is vulnerable, and no one is happy. Mosquitos and the disease are ever present.

The people are preoccupied with ceremony and rank. The culture looks inward: "To confront other minds, other ideas, is considered in principle an act of perfidy." (p.49). The Duchess is an exception, in her physical isolation, books are her communication. While she has a life of the mind, she cannot escape the culture. While she performs acts of kindness, she understands and uses the tools of control for those she outranks. She will not or cannot follow her heart.

This book is beautifully written. Characters and the tension they inject are poetically drawn, be they major characters such as Don Pietro, who in every scene exudes his technical status as "uncle husband" or minor characters such as that of Guiseppa of whom it is said to be "inconceivable" that she is not married at 23. Many scenes are exquisite depictions of time and place such as the complex upstairs/downstairs relationship of the Duchess and Fila who has been gifted to her, the funeral of Don Pietro and the business matters that follow it, how Marianna seeks a wife for Saro, and the picnic in the vineyard to name a few.

There is an Afterward by Anna Camaiti Hostert. But for the revelation of one plot element, this would have been better as a preface. Its information on author's background and Hostert's interpretation of how Sicily's 1700's inwardness and social structure impoverished the island can better inform the text if they are read first.

This is an excellent novel and I highly recommend it to those who appreciate historical fiction for what it says about place and time.

wow - what a read. On the surface, a light, simple story of the life and times of a deaf-mute early 18th Sicilian aristocratic girl named Marianna, who was forced, at 13, to marry her uncle (mother's brother)... NOT weird for that time, at least not among the aristocratic. The family is all sorts of inbred and dysfunctional, but hey, again, that was the norm for that time period among that level of society. The story sweeps through her life, her family, the scenery, the scents (a lot of detail on the scents -it's her strongest sense), the trials and tribulations of living in Sicily in the early 1700s. Also there is a little bit of mystery - it seems that Marianna has vague recollections of sounds, and that possibly, something traumatic happened to her in her early childhood, at which point she lost her ability to both hear and speak.

Actually, the story is much deeper that that. Our deaf-mute heroine works as a symbol of women of that time. Their fate was either to be married off at a young age or head to the convent. They did not have a choice - they really did not have a "voice" in the matter! A-ha, you say! Exactly, I say. Marianna did not have a voice, literally, and figuratively. And, because she was also deaf, she was treated differently and was often considered simple. We are privy to Marianna's thoughts, so we know that she is not simple. She is quite smart, and quite well read and quite capable.
(right now I am really wishing goodreads had not lost my review... it was a good one.. this one pales in comparison)
It appears that either Marianna can actually read other people's minds, or, more likely, her other senses are so keenly developed that she is able to infer what people are NOT saying.

In any event, you can enjoy this book on its simple level, or delve into it a little deeper and explore the oppressed lives of voiceless women.

note - this book was written in Italian, and translated into English. The author is a famous and prolific contemporary Italian author.
one complaint (minor) - not enough detail on the food!!! the meals sounded sumptuous, but I wanted more. And no, I wasn’t hungry when I read this book. I suppose the book is not supposed to be a gustatory travelogue of 18th century Sicily, but the first level of the book could function even better if the menus were enhanced. ;) (less)

Myself: Ma', sai che sto leggendo un libro bellissimo? La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa. Mi piace la Maraini. Ha uno stile meraviglioso, mi ricorda quella sensazione che percepisco quando leggo quelle penne delicate che ti costruiscono immagini su immagini in un modo tanto lieve e dolce e saggio e amaro tutto assieme che non puoi fare a meno di dire "oh..".

I must read the Italian original. The translation simply loses the poetic nuance of the Italian original. Not quite as literal as the Lawrence translation of Mastro Don Gesualdo which upsets me no end....this translation shows the book up as superficial; which it isn't.....
As I am Maltese living within a stones throw of Sicily I can feel the atmosphere , perhaps, more keenly and realize, possibly as i am also fluent in italian, more than most, what's missing in the English version.

I picked this book up at a used bookstore. I never heard of the author. The preview sounded good. The story was great although I thought it could have been told within 100 pages instead of 235. It was very heavy reading, wordy and sometimes confusing. When I finished I read the afterword. I was surprised to find out who the author was. I am wondering if perhaps the book just did not translate well. Still a good story though.

For some reason, I was alone in the house, woke early and started reading this book. I sat at the dining room table and read all day. Finished the book before I went to bed that night. This is very unusual for me. Was it the best book I ever read? No, but the circumstances were just right for me to enjoy this in one long day.

Loooved this book. Had to read it in my final Italian language course and I remember so much of it so vividly. Set in Sicily in the 1700's, Marianna Ucría is a deaf girl in a semi-wealthy family, forced to marry an old uncle because she's not as valuable as a hearing woman would be.

Una sola parola "entusiasmante". E' il primo libro che leggo della Maraini. Splendido, con personaggi molto ben delineati, prima su tutti la protagonista. Marianna è un personaggio che esce dalle pagine e diviene reale, tangibile. Un libro veramente bello

Ha un grosso difetto, l'essere fondato su premesse mediche totalmente inverosimili. L'handicap di Marianna è una metafora perfetta rispetto al trauma che subisce ma è ben poco verosimile, e la sua capacità di leggere e scrivere come e meglio di una persona non sordomuta è quantomeno sospetta. Se si passa sopra a questo, la scrittura è abbastanza buona da rendere questo libro una lettura scorrevole, seppure tra le righe si avverta chiaramente il sentore di romanzone femminile anni ottanta/n...more

This book is perfect for somebody who is into historical fiction and Italian royalty. The only offbeat info is that the main character is a deaf and mute duchess. I don’t swim very well in this genre.

Dacia Maraini is an Italian writer. She is the daughter of Sicilian Princess Topazia Alliata di Salaparuta, an artist and art dealer, and of Fosco Maraini, a Florentine ethnologist and mountaineer of mixed Ticinese, English and Polish background who wrote in particular on Tibet and Japan. Maraini's work focuses on women’s issues, and she has written numerous plays and novels.
