Alice’s older brother is clever at everything, and he taunts her mercilessly about her difficulty in pronouncing words. Her baby sister is a toddling tornado with a capacity for more ferocity than the worst hurricane. But neither of them has the power to charm Alice’s birthday guinea pig, and can’t even pronounce his name (Aminal — you try it!) Maybe Alice is special after ...more

Alice is a middle child. Her older brother teases her mercilessly because she cannot say the word "animal" correctly and her little sister is an out of control toddler. On a class outing, she settles on what she wants for her birthday. Alice’s brother gets his comeuppance as she names her new pet. This is labeled a low vocabulary, early reader chapter book.

Alice, as a character, is sandwiched between two sibling extremes, which makes her most approachable and relatable for elementary children w

What a sweet little early chapter book! I'd put this at a challenging 2nd grade, easy 3rd grade level. Alice's family is so wonderful, so warm and charming. She's teased by older brother Oliver for mispronouncing "aminal" After a class field trip to a small farm, Alice wishes more than anything for a real pet pig on her birthday. Her family has a delightful tradition of making an elaborate shaped cake every year to commemorate an important event of that year. A penguin, an airplane, a chutes and ...more

Just zipped through this adorable book for young readers aged five to nine. My eldest son read this in about fifteen minutes. A very sweet account of a young girl who meets and falls in love with a disabled pig. Will her birthday wish come true? Is the surprise in the back yard a little porcine? You shall have to read this to find out!
I'm the wrong age group. And I can't help but be bored with this one. Not much of a story, not much of a character to like, and not much of a book. But I bet some 8 year olds would absolutely love it.

A completely charming story! My first graders identified with the main character, were delighted by the naughty younger sister, and enjoyed every aspect of this delightful family's story. When we got to the part where Alice names her birthday pet....they cheered. Wonderful!

This book is like a nice book to read for fun, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't that emotional but i would say it is surely a nice book, but i think the climax could have been more serious.

Sweet and nice. A Clementine-esque family tries (and succeeds) to give Alice the perfect party and present. She has asked for the three legged pig she saw at the local farm but her family finds a nice compromise and all ends well.
