This is the first “real” book I remember reading – I also remember crying while I read it. I actually gasped when I came across this title while browsing here on goodreads. Zeze, the five-year-old street wise shoe shiner and his imaginary friend – the orange tree – are as part of me as Harry Potter will one day be part of my children. Zeze though is not fighting with the forces of evil in an imaginary world. His struggles are those of poverty and loneliness, so real to this day yet to childre

The first book (out of two) to EVER make me cry, this one actually made me sob. I can relate to the main character and his little boy's view on the world, his fruitful imagination, and his endless creativity. I believe everyone can see themselves in him, in a way or another. The sad part -no spoiler- is his depression, his hopelessness, his apparently never-ending sadness, and how much tragedies can affect a little child's life when those closest to him are oblivious to what's happening. Teaches

"My sweet orange tree"
This book will always have a special place in my heart. I first read it when I was about 9-10 years old. It made me realize that books can bring out so much emotion in people. Nearly a decade later, I realized I lost the book so I tracked it down, read it again...and it stills bring tears to my eyes.

Not as impressed as I expected myself to be. Interesting opinions about love, hate, religion, good and evil, but hard to believe they belong to a 5 year old kid.
I semi-hated the translation.

This book is simply fantastic. As many people are forced to read it in school, most times they hate it, just like I did when I first (tried) to read it. But after a while, when I was about 12, I read it again and couldn't understand why I hadn't liked it.
This book is incredibly beautiful. It tells us Zezé's suffering but in such a beautiful, ravishing way. When I finished reading it, I found myself crying, even sobbing, and just couldn't stop. In a way, I felt a part of Zezé, suffer More...

I read it for the first time at age 10, and cried a lot over it.
I've re read it several times since then. I think it was shocking the first time to read about something so unusual (at the time) as an abusive and poor family. Sadly, this as you get older you harden yourself by hearing about violent situations daily, so its not as eye opening.
I wonder what a 10 year old would think reading this book nowadays... would they be as shocked as I was, seeing as they are exposed to violent ne More...

Jose Mauro de Vasconcelos takes the reader into the world of Zezé, a five, almost six, year old, living in poverty in Brazil. His father is unemployed and Zezé spends much of his time roaming the streets of his neighborhood shining shoes and getting into mischief pulling pranks on people. Because of his curiosity, lack of fear, and genuine sensitivity, people of all ages are drawn to him, and as a result so is the reader. "Mi Planta de Naranja-Lima" is tied together by a series of vi

One of my favorite books of all times! A classic from my childhood. The sweetest type of writing. It is as if you hear the story told by the voice of a child. English version is called My Sweet Orange Tree Hardcover, but I can't testify to the quality of the translation Brazilian-Portuguese to English.

One of the most poignant and touching books I have read, it brings out strongly aspects of what it means to be human through the experiences of the author as a young boy and his relationship with his beloved Sweet Orange tree. This book is difficult to find in English in the U.S., but well worth it if you can.

I read this book a long, looong time ago and remember that it had had a huge impact on me. It was one of the first books I read. It was so sad, and beautiful, I feel so much nostalgia when I think about it. I know I still have it somewhere (I think...) but there's no way I could find it now :/

The best book of my childhood. It made me cry so many times and it still makes me cry from just thinking about it. It was the first book to let me know that sometimes you couldn't tear yourself away from a book even when you could not read a single word because tears would not stop.

The most unforgettable book of my childhood. I cant believe I cant find an English translation to gift to my friends. Its a great book in which the protagonist, Zeze climbs into your heart from the pages of the story and never leaves there as you grow up.

I've read in Thai translation. During my reading this book, I've cried, cried and cried.
There are so many wondering misunderstood by innocent of adults. The misunderstanding are always flying around our whole world. We must learn from Zeze and this book.

Beautifully executed narrative. The reader is transported to a world seen by the eyes of a poor but full with life child. It really brought me to shed a tear. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in captivating stories.
