This book serves mainly as a reminder that the bulk of the German Army was exactly that, a national army of common soldiers distinctly separate from the Nazis. Herr Bleichert was following orders and performing normal military duties during a military action, not acting on any particular social or political beliefs. The book follows him during one particular campaign very early in the war and ends with the surrender of the enemy. The story isn't particularly engaging and the writing is bland. ...more
