Elizabeth Cox’s novel The Slow Moon was a huge disappointment to me. I was really looking forward to reading it but it turned out to be really, really mediocre.
Central to the story is the relationship between Crow, 16, (the son of wealthy, well-respected parents) and Sophie, 14, (daughter of a widow). The story opens as they sneak off from a high school party to have some alone-time in the woods. Crow and Sophie really like each other and they have decided that they want to take the...more

This book is a quick and interesting read. One night in the woods, fourteen-year-old Sophie is brutally attacked by more than one man. She may not have seen the attackers well, or at all, but in any case, she can’t remember. Her boyfriend, Crow, is charged with the crime. Readers know he is innocent but for the first half of the book, most of the suspense is built on the question whether Crow will be convicted. In the second half of the book much of the suspense arises from uncertainty abo...more
This book caught my attention in a very strong way. I usually never read about books rape, but this one was different. With this novel, I got to see a whole new and dark side a small town lives in. I got to see that people let on a very different image that what they are really going thorough. It reveals of the dark secrets, and explains how that leads to the young girl who was raped by her own “happy and safe” community. I recommend this book to all of my friends since it does make you open you...more
I liked this book. Pretty fast read. I found the adult conversations the interesting part of the book- and I thought it was important that the one mother brought up the idea of adults teaching children, through their actions, blame. I don't know if it was intentional- but I was slightly disappointed that the children who were the culprits of the tragedy didn't seem to truly understand or take responsibility of their actions by the close of the book. I felt that exploration of them were slighted ...more

Read this book over a weekend. Not bad.
Normally, if I am not thrilled with a book it takes me a while to read. This one held my interest as the writing was clear; smooth.
It was easy to know you where "there" during the tragic events of a party, where teens acted like teens.
The book was suddenly predictable, and I found on the last 10 pages I had read the book before. However, reading the book before did not diminish my entertainment.

I stumbled across this one at a used book store. I decided I must read it because of Jodi Picoult's review on the cover...
"I found myself pausing over the beauty of this book, and wishing I'd been the one to think of it." ~ Jodi Picoult
Such quick and wonderful read! I loved it. True that it was pretty easy to figure out the "who done its" early on, I still hung on every word weaved by Elizabeth Cox. What a great job she did in describing each of th...more

I really liked this book, particularly the care the author took wth the characters. She tapped into the strenghts, emotions and insight of the characters, which contributed well to the story. I did not particularly like the flow and organization of the story, but it worked. I would also like to think that a tragedy of this nature would actually have as good of an outcome in a real small town, but I don't have that much faith.
This book was really quite a simple one about how crime and tragedy can affect a small town. It was interesting and there's even a Reader's Guide included at the end for group reads. However, there were a couple of side plots that did not seem to be resolved by the end of the book and kind of left me questioning where they would have lead. I wasn't as excited about this book as others I have read but it did keep me reading until the end when things were revealed.
Somewhat Jodi-Picoultish, but I like her books much better. Her characters have depth. There were way too many in Slow Moon to give any one much depth, unless the author had opted to write a King-sized tome. Interesting main plotline (gang rape of a young girl and finding her assailants), but this got pushed aside too frequently for the minor characters' subplots. Which weren't nearly as interesting and most IMO didn't do much to push to novel forward.
I enjoyed this book (more 3 1/2 stars than 3.) It had a Jodi Picoult-esqe quality to it. The ending was anti-climatic. The author didn't build up suspense so the reader was left pretty much knowing the ending long before the end. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, though, since the book was a good read and I enjoyed the author's style of writing. I would read more by this author.
I loved that this book had some twists within it. It was a very fast-paced read. Despite the tramatic nature of the plot, this story was a great example to open the eyes of its readers to an all too real scenario. This is a good book about an unfortunate situation that displays raw dipictions of a victim and her assultants. A bit emotional and disturbing at times but a good read.
A quick read, true, but it did keep me interested until the end. I did feel that there were far too many characters to keep up with and some unnecessary character background. I would have rather read more stories about the main characters but still a very interesting read. A 3 day read at most.
This book was suprisingly good! I enjoyed the writing style and the characters as well- wasn't written in a typical beginning, middle, end. I loved how each character is connected in some way through the story. I had the book figured out early on, but it was still a great read!
Inthis book something terrible happens to Corw and Sophie - something that impacts their entire little town of South Pittsburgh, Tennessee. I loved watching multiple people try to make sense of what happened, work through bad times, and repair relationships. My favorite part of the book was the reference to the "Before. It made me think about different times in my life that clearly define a "before" and an "after."
Meh... Thought it would be better than it was. Took me four nights to read just couldn't get swept away... The storyline was good, but did not appreciate the jumping around, I found it hard to follow, whether it was current or past being talked about.

A decent read...not as much character development as I would have hoped given the extremely serious subject matter (gang rape, infedelity, teenage homosexuality and the fear of coming out...), but the book kept me reading to the end and ended up a relatively hopeful note, all things considered.
Reading this book was painful. There were too many people to keep track of, and I did not care about any of them. I found the writing disjunct, and told from too many points of view. I could not WAIT for the book to end.
I kept waiting for this story to develop more than it did.....and kept getting distracted by all the sub-plots that all seemed to pop up and then go nowhere.
A very sad emotional book...especially if you have teenagers.

8/24 still reading this book. it's a quick read, although i'm not really sure how i feel about it. i kinda feel as though the writing is all over the place and what is said in a sentence could you have had a whole chapter about it. it's not a bad book, but i guess i would have written it differently. i hope to finish in the next couple days.

Boo. I really couldn't get into this one. This book is like the worst kind of chick lit. I thought the plot was terrible, the characters were flat, and I found the whole thing to be pretty unbelievable.
An easy to read novel about the lies people tell... and the ugly truth and beauty of reality. A young girl is raped and every person involved in the case learns about how damaging lies are.
I read this on vacation. Thought it was very well written & suspenseful enough that I didn't want to put it down. I've never heard of the author before, but I will definitely read her other books.
I was amazed by the way this crime novel was almost poetic in rhythm. The author, Elizabeth Cox, must have been exhausted after finishing this novel -- it was written that well, in my opinion.
Good mystery although might be classified as a "chick" book as it has a lot of character descriptions in it. The story keeps us interested...it is about a group of teenagers.
This book was not as good as I was hoping/expecting it to be. She seems to be a Jodi Picoult type author, except her characters are no as developed. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't a great one either.
Jodie Piccouolt-ish novel of love/sex/deceit among teenagers in a small town. The inter-relationships with their families and the family relation ships feel very real.
I chose this book for book club this month. The other girls all really liked it. I liked it but I thought there were a lot of unecessary words at times. Very quick read and maybe one with teenagers should read it!
I picked up this book on a whim, using classic Geometric Theorems: if a = b, and b = c, then a = c. If Jodi Picoult recommends this book, and Cynthia devours Jodi's novels (and I of course trust Cynthia's judgment), then this will be a good book. The logic did not fail me. This book was beautifully done, and Cox treated the subject with grace and delicacy. There were parts that I did not understand, true. However, the ending was perfect. It was believable, and Cox truly understood that Sop...more

“Love came in so many forms. We love for weakness or strength, she thought, for security or wildness, for money, or beauty, or sometimes for sadness. Whatever reason, the brain turned giddy with self-worth, and self-worth became indelibly linked to the one who was loved.”
