Once there were four kittens who had never seen snow. The first three kittens are wary—snow is cold, it’s wet, it covers everything. As the seasons pass and winter begins to loom, the three skittish kittens worry. But the fourth kitten is getting excited. Snow will cover everything! “I can’t wait!”

A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann tells of one adventurous kitten who is excited about the snow that will appear in winter, while his siblings all worry about it.

The most adventurous kitten in the litter final shows his siblings that snow really is fun.

The story is simple, and has some repetition. For me, the last line isn't right - I think it should read: "WE can't wait!" It's a possible choice for beginning or transisitional readers.

Rohmann's illustrations are relief and monotype prints. The kitte...more

A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohman is a story about four kittens that had never seen snow. As each season went on, three of the cats were dreading the snow coming, while the fourth cat was excited for the snow and could not wait! The first snow finally came. Three of the cats hid under rugs and did not want to go outside. However, the fourth cat went straight outside to play in the snow and loved it. The three other cats looked outside to see how much the cat was having and joined.

I positively love this simple book and it has been a delight to read to my very young son. The illustrations are not quite the high-contrast of a book like Kitten's First Full Moon, but they contain thick dark outlines as well as the color, which I believe has made it more engaging for my 3 month old. At this very young age it can be difficult to find picture books with short, simple text, and simple illustrations that are fun and enjoyable to read as a parent. This book has taken its place next...more

I chose this book because my daughter loves kittens. This book starts off with four kittens in front of a mailbox. The kittens are looking at postcards from "snowy" places, and they have never seen snow. All of them are scared of snow except for kitten number four. The story goes on with them getting closer to snow and still being scare except for kitten number four. When the snow finally comes, the fourth one runs outside and what do you think the other three did? I don't want to ruin the story...more

As the seasons pass, four playful kittens anticipate what it will be like when snow comes for the first time in their young lives. Three dread the cold, wet drifts that will be “heaped to their whiskers,” but the fourth kitten, depicted as the most mischievous in Rohmann’s bright, expressive relief and monotype prints, can’t wait. When the dreaded first snowfall comes to pass, the three scaredy-cats hide at first, but ultimately realize the fourth kitten had it right all along – snow is fun! For...more

Simple tale about four little kittens, three who dread snow and one little kitten who can't wait! Nice for toddlers.

I've been trying to read new books to Natalie at bed time before we get to her favorites. Even though she isn't too accepting of new story books, we got through this one while Daddy was getting her into her pjs. What was great about this book is that it was about snow and we happened to read it on the first real snow of the season, which is Natalie's first real experience with snow. The text was simple, with a nice pattern. The illustrations were nice, though not my favorite style. A good book f...more

My daughter loves all books about kittens pretty much so even though this one isn't one of my favorites she enjoys it.

Its about four kittens and one is looking forward to the coming winter while the other three worry through each season about it. Its fairly repitious and very simple. Good for little children I think.

The drawings are cute, not my favorite style but cute. I do love the feline smiles on the kittens, reminds me of one of our cats.

Very cute! This story takes the kittens through four seasons, from spring to winter. Rohmann certainly has observed how kittens behave. In one picture, there are two bowls of kibbles on the floor. Instead of all the kibbles being in the bowls, Rohmann has shown some of them on the floor outside the bowls--so true and typical at my house. I'm not sure that all cats enjoy the snow, but young ones seem to. Cute story! Cat lovers will enjoy it.

Eric Rohmann paints beautiful pictures for his books, and this is another great example. It's a simple story about four kittens getting ready for winter, which none of them look forward to except for one. This is a good book for young children to talk about winter and snow and prepare for colder weather. It's also good to talk about if they enjoy cold weather or not, because at first the kittens are not excited for winter, but then realize they love it.

Four kittens contemplating snow for the first time:
"When autumn winds ruffled the trees, the first kitten said, 'Soon the snow will fall and fall. We'll be cold and wet and snow will cover everything!'
'Piles and drifts!' said the second kitten.
'Heaped to our whiskers,' said the third kitten.
Still the fourth kitten said, 'I can't wait.'"
A very cute and lovely story that briefly touches on the seasons and weather.

A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann is one of my daughter's collection of cat books. We bought it at last year's book fair. I knew she'd like it from the adorable four kittens on the cover.

The story teaches the seasons of the year. From spring through fall three of the four kittens worry about the upcoming winter snows. The fourth kitten says he's looking forward to trying something new.

When winter comes the adventurous kitten eagerly goes out to try the snow. The others need some convincing. I wasn't...more

0-7. Also Mock Caldecott. In this simple and colorful story, four kittens anticipate the coming winter - three with fear and anxiety and the golden fourth kitten with joyful anticipation and excitement. Beginning with spring and ending in winter, the reader follows the kittens on their playful outings as the three timid kittens share their fears ("Snow scares me!") while the daring fourth kitten always ends with "I can't wait!" Finally, a snowy winter morning arrives, and the fearful three do no...more

A nicely told story of four little kittens who have never experienced snow. While three of the kittens are apprehensive about the looming weather, one more adventurous kitten, "Can't wait!"
Beautifully illustrations done in relief and monotype prints help gently address the fear of the unknown.

I like his illustration style. If it wasn't for the reason that I've never seen any cats rolling in the snow... I had a cat who would perch like an owl in a tree overlooking the snowy landscape. Anyway, I think stories like this can be realistic and still be good. Hence 2 stars.

Four kittens await snowfall. Each season passes with three of the kittens discussing the dreaded possibility of the cold, wet problem. One looks forward to snow. He leads the others to enjoy. Rohmann is a good artist. His stories don't do much for me.

This is such a cute book! It's short and simple, and I love the artwork. My son adores it too. It addresses fear of change, as 3 of the kittens are afraid of the forthcoming winter and snow, while the 4th kitten says, "I can't wait!"
Amy
Oh! To have an optimistic fourth kitten in your life saying "I can't wait" to every pending fear you have!! So sweet was that kitten, but there could have been so much more to this story. Not much to it at all.

I found nothing inspiring about the story but the illustrations are absolutely charming! Something about these kitties just tugs at my heartstrings, they are oh-so-adorable! I think I hear them purring now! ;->

4 1/2 stars. Very sweet! I think I flipped through this when we first got it in, but didn't really stop to read it. I'm glad that I sat and read it through today. It's excellent for a winter storytime.

Illustrated by the author. A very sweet book about four kittens, three of whom are quite timid and one quite brave. The repetition is sure to make kids smile. I'll be trying it for sure at storytime!

Sweet book about a year in the life of four kittens, one of whom looks forward to snow. Would work well for storytimes about cats, four seasons, snow, and patience or waiting or expectation or hope.
Kermit
This was on a list where readers were conjecturing possible Caldecott winners for 2009. The illustrations are clean, simple, uncluttered and fit well with the idea of a kitten who is more adventurous than his siblings. Great readaloud for 3-5 year olds.
Deb
Used in my first storytime, good contrast of illustrations showed up well with our projector. Got some chuckles for the kittens reactions to snow.
Miri
I should really give this three stars, because I do love Eric Rohmann's style of illustration, but the text just fell totally flat for me.
Kayla Jane
The positive attitude of the kittens in this book is an adorable attitude to model for young people. I enjoyed this book.

Adorable picture book! Good storytime book for these topics:

1) Change
2) Snow / Weather
3) Cats
Molly
The story is fine but this book is all about illustrations about cute kittens. I also love to see what Maggie will do when it has snowed and I open the door for her to go outside and this gives me an insight into what she is thinking. Ages 2+

This was so sweet and we read it several times while we had it at home. Isabella loved it!
Tracy
This would be a very good book to read to 2-3 year olds along with The Snowy Day by Ezra Keats.
