Travel, like great writing, makes us look at the world through new eyes. This past summer I searched for stories over four continents, from Florence to Portland to Lima to Brisbane. And I was continually rewarded by narrative, in its many forms, from the 15th century paintings in Florence and Cuzco, to poems I heard read aloud in Portland and Brisbane. After a week deep in ...more

Loved the cover art by Sophie Blackall, Chinelo Okparanta's "Marta," and Shirley Jackson's "Mrs. Spencer and the Oberons."

Also enjoyed the interview with children's book illustrator Kevin Henkes, which focuses on the creative process. Here's how that interview wraps up: "When I'm winding down on a book, working on the final pictures, I slow down and hope that by the time I finish I have an idea for whatever will be next. Great winter reading! This issue's Lost & Found section turned me on to Tove Jansson's novel "The True Deceiver," and hoping to pick up "The Summer Book" later this year. Short story highlights were Alexander Maksik's "Trim Palace," the unsettling "Arcadia" by Steven Millhauser, and Shirley Jackson's recently unearthed "Mrs. Spencer and the Oberons." If the excerpt from Jenny Offill's new book "The Dept. of Speculation" is anything to go on, that should be fantastic as well.

The layout of this anthology is fantastic. My favorites works were the short stories: "Arcadia", the peaceful wooden retreat where they leave your death readily available at all times. "Trim Palace" - A successful friend. An unsuccessful one. Alcohol and a dog in a fancy pool. The poetry reminded me how little I can appreciate modern poetry. Just my disposition, I suppose. I tried and failed to really connect with it.

Overall, this was just kind of run-of-the-mill for me. No particular standouts, some pretty forgettable poetry, and lackluster fiction that just left me feeling cold (har har, get it, because it's winter reading? I'm funny).

The short stories in this issue are quite good, particularly Millhauser, Albert, Maksik and Jackson.
